    Samsung, T-Mobile announce :), Gravity 3, and Gravity T — yes, we said :)

After bizarre names like Rant, Corby, and Clubby, it appears the phone industry has finally buckled into a state of chaos -- a state where words no longer exist at all. Samsung has brought a new trio of midrange text-centric devices to T-Mobile today, starting on the left with the :) (we're told "Smiley" is an acceptable substitute, thank goodness) that features a portrait QWERTY slide, Exchange support, and a 1.3 megapixel camera; it goes for just $19.99 on contract. Moving up the ladder a rung, the Gravity 3 naturally replaces the Gravity 2 with both a numeric keypad and slide-out landscape QWERTY keyboard, 2 megapixel cam, and full HTML browsing for $49.99 on contract. Finally, the Gravity T is basically a touchscreen version of the Gravity 3 with basically identical specs other than the 2.8-inch full touchscreen; it goes for $74.99 on contract. All three are available today.

  • Apple randomly canceling some iPhone pre-orders? Update: AT&T pre-orders too?

Apple randomly canceling some iPhone pre-orders? Update: AT&T pre-orders too?

We haven't verified exactly what's going on here, but we've gotten several tips tonight from people who've received an iPhone 4 pre-order cancellation email from Apple saying that their order couldn't be authorized. That sounds like an AT&T authorization problem to us, and given the the litany of problems that Apple and AT&T had all week dealing with the huge number of pre-orders, we can't say we're too surprised to hear that the chaos continues. Here's the email:
    Dear Customer,

We were unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone order. As a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order. To complete the purchase of your iPhone, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T company-owned retail store.

    We apologize for this inconvenience.

    Sincerely,
    Apple Online Store Team
Uh, yeah. We're obviously looking into the situation, and we'll let you know what we find out.

Update: We're hearing that some people are getting cancellations from AT&T, as well -- curiouser and curiouser.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • AT&T: iPhone 4 Pre-Order Sales Were Ten Times Higher Than First Day 3GS Sales

AT&T: iPhone 4 Pre-Order Sales Were Ten Times Higher Than First Day 3GS Sales

AT&T just issued a statement addressing the massive iPhone 4 pre-order sales yesterday. The company said that sales of the iPhone 4 were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3G S last year. AT&T also said that they are suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders they've already received. At&T wil resume taking pre-orders when they get more inventory from Apple. Yesterday's chaos also brought more than 13 million visits to AT&T's website to determine if users were able to upgrade to the new phone, which was about 3-times higher than the previous record for eligibility upgrade checks in one day.

  • AT&T offering price protection (or iPhone 4 swap) to recent 3GS buyers

AT&T offering price protection (or iPhone 4 swap) to recent 3GS buyers

We've been able to confirm some leaked information out of modmyi.com today that AT&T is doing us a solid by extending price protection for recent iPhone 3GS buyers by just a little bit. If you purchased a 3GS -- either the 16GB or 32GB model -- between May 7 and May 14, you'll have until June 14 to get credited the difference between the price you paid and the $149 / $199 they're charging now; if you bought it after the 14th of May, you'd have at least until the 14th of this month anyway, so it's effectively a one-week extension. If you'd rather trade up to an iPhone 4 rather than pocketing some cash and keeping the 3GS, you've got an option there, too: anyone who picked up a 3GS between May 7 and May 21 can preorder an iPhone 4 by June 21 and get the new phone for only the difference in cost, assuming you bring in your 3GS when you pick it up.

On a related note, modmyi.com is also reporting that AT&T corporate stores are set to open at 7AM on the 24th, iPhone 4 launch day, though we're not able to confirm this one. Word on the street is that new customers will only be able to activate one line and existing customers will be able to buy one iPhone 4 per line of service, clearly an attempt to stretch inventory as far as it'll go. With the way Apple's setting up for preorders and launch-day delivery, it seems like a lot of this chaos and bedlam is going to be avoided -- but hey, it's Apple. You never know.

Study: Wikipedia actually pretty accurate (so calm down)

What's the best site on the Web these days? Wikipedia, correct. Haters will hate, of course, pointing to this or that error, or highlighting high-profile compilations, but the spirit of the site endures: free and open information for all. Now a study has been published that says, you know what, on the whole, the information on Wikipedia isn't any less accurate than you'll find elsewhere. Does this mean, when writing a paper for you 12th grade history class, that you should ever have the site in your bibliography? No. No it does not. But to use the site as a stepping stone for further research? Absolutely, yes.

And now your car can be hacked, so what are you gonna do?

Looks like your car is one dumb "hacker" kid away from careening into a pole, or, more comically, into a big bale of hay. Researchers have demonstrated how to take control of a car's engine, brakes, and fiddle with the instruments. Is there anything you can do about this?
