HP not out of the WebOS smartphone business after all
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsNow doesn’t this make you feel better? Mark Hurd at HP originally said that there would be no more WebOS smartphones… but now there will be! A Christmas miracle! He said: When we look at the market, we see an array of interconnected devices, including tablets, printers, and of course, smartphones. We believe webOS can become the [...] -
Terror in Taipei: Computex taxi drivers watch live TV, video chat while cruising
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsIt's a Christmas miracle that Joanna and I survived the week in Taipei. Not because our brains nearly exploded from the wealth of non-functioning Windows 7 tablets we saw, but because most of our cab drivers found themselves -- um, preoccupied -- while on the job. Over here, deep within a WiMAX hotspot, it's not uncommon to see cabbies video chatting and watching live local TV over-the-air while driving, and since you'd never believe me sans pics, I've got a handful of those as proof. Call it culture shock, or call it reckless -- we're calling it "America needs to get with the program and catch up to Asia."Terror in Taipei: Computex taxi drivers watch live TV, video chat while cruising originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 04 Jun 2010 09:58:00 EST. Oprah Moment, Take 2: Google gives an EVO 4G to everyone at I/O
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No Comments
Okay. Think back to elementary school. Your buddy got a brand new toy for Christmas -- the one you've been wanting for months. Your parents got you socks. Remember that feeling? That feeling of loss for something you never had? That's called jealousy, friend. Now magnify that by a hundred.
Google just gave everyone at I/O the EVO 4G.

Nintendo 3DS to be available this October instead of early next year?
Posted on April 20, 2010 | No Comments
Nintendo might be fast-tracking its upcoming 3DS. Apparently one UK video game industry source stated to CVG that the 3D gaming system will launch this coming October, well before the 2011 date we previously heard. The goal here is to get the system to market prior to the Christmas shopping madness.

A TRON trailer for 2010
Posted on March 30, 2010 | No CommentsTron Legacy comes out right before Christmas this year, but it’s probably best if you see the first movie before the sequel. This trailer should get you in the mood. It did it for me. Oh, and FYI, Tron is supposed to be released on Blu-ray in November, but there quality high-def digital copies lurking around torrent sites [...] -
Random 23-inch Acer monitor on sale at Circuit City for $160
Posted on March 23, 2010 | No CommentsThis is a 23-inch Acer monitor. It’s on sale at Circuit City’s Web site (yes, they’re back as a Web site) for $160, down from $230. 1080p, the whole nine yards. I bought a 23-inch Acer monitor for myself for Christmas. It’s nice enough, though the lack of headphone jack isn’t cool. My fault, didn’t [...] -

Weekend Project: Digitize all those old VCR tapes
Posted on January 22, 2010 | No Comments
I realize the futility of posting a deal on Friday for a “weekend project” when the thing won’t actually show up at your house until next week or the week after but, hey, weekends happen all the time. This deal is good today, only, though. Woot.com is selling the Ion VCR 2 PC for $30 – it costs $50 and up elsewhere.

Online Holiday Spending Reaches $25 Billion; Shows Strong Growth In Consumer Electronics Sales
Posted on December 30, 2009 | No Comments
The numbers are in. And they look good. It appears that online holiday spending rose slightly this year, by 5 percent, to $27 billion for the shopping season from November 1 through Christmas Eve, according to comScore. For the time period from Black Friday through Christmas Eve, sales showed a slight uptick, rising 3.5 percent. With respect to individual product categories, consumer electronics saw yearly sales growth of slightly over 20 percent, while sales of jewelry and watches also rose.
From reports over the past few months, the numbers indicated that the total online spending would be higher this year than last, when the U.S. spending was blindsided with a crippling recession. The final shopping weekend before Christmas saw a 13 percent growth rate in online spending from the previous year, thanks to the wintry mess that hit the Eastern Seaboard. And the full week posted a 6 percent yearly increase in spending, setting a one-week sales record with more than $4.8 billion in spending. Online sales numbers from Black Friday and Cyber Monday also appeared to be stronger than last year.

TSA easing off new airline rules, JetBlue brings back live TV
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No Comments
It seems that the TSA is slowly backing down rules that were implemented after the foiled Christmas Day bombing. According to a Reuters report flight crews will now be a sort of Judge Dread enforcer. It will be up to the pilot and crew to determine if passengers need to stay seated or if they can have items in their lap. In-flight entertainment that shows the plane's relative location will also be under their jurisdiction.
With this much power in their hands, you better be good for the sake of everyone else on board. A simple request for a glass of OJ might result in everyone having to put their heads down for the rest of the flight.

Come to beautiful Lancashire, England, where the future a boot stamping on a human face - forever! There you can be arrested on specious grounds for taking pictures of Santas a Christmas Parade!
