iOS: Apple once again picks a Cisco name for one of its products

This is nothing that a fat cheque won’t solve, but Apple has changed the name of iPhone OS to iOS. IOS is a named owned by Cisco Systems. You’ll recall that the name iPhone was also owned by Cisco. Is Apple so wealthy that it can go around taking trademarked name, paying the owners for [...]

iPhone OS 4.0, Now Called iOS, Is Here

The second biggest news out of San Fran today? The announcement of iPhone OS 4.0, Apple’s biggest improvement to the iPhone OS since, well, 3.0. This new version includes multi-tasking (although backgrounding would be the proper term), app folders, a new version of Mail, and a carrier unlock (Not officially sanctioned by Apple, but available nonetheless).

The weirdest thing? It’s now called iOS. And the iOS name is owned by Cisco.

Cisco takes their certification courses mobile, launches M-Learning iPhone app

Becoming a Cisco-Certified Network engineer can add that extra little somethin-somethin’ to your resume — and hopefully your paycheck. Alas, studying for the tests on-the-go is generally a pretty sure fire way to wreck your back, given that the books tend to be about as heavy as a box of bricks. Looking to save the next [...]

Playing both sides: Nokia sold monitoring equipment to Iran

Nokia Siemens makes lots of mobile networking gear. Most of it provides the connectivity we use every day. But they also make and sell equipment to monitor that connectivity. Such devices are required in the U.S. and much of Europe for law enforcement purposes, and Nokia no doubt makes a pretty penny selling this monitoring equipment to various governments. New details have emerged recently that Nokia sold the same gear to Iran, where the government used it not for law enforcement purposes but to silence dissent. Big surprise!

Apple further tips their hand about tablet name

It appears that Apple has tipped their hand regarding the name of their expected tablet computer. Way back in September of 2009, Apple filed a lawsuit against Fujitsu regarding the name, "iPad". Apple hasn't been aggressive about fighting for the name, but they did file for the name on an international scale, and they own that trademark.

CrunchDeals: Flip MinoHD camcorder for $120

Ho ho ho, this may be the lowest price you’ll see on a new Flip MinoHD camcorder for a while. Amazon’s got them for $120, today only, down from $160. To be honest, Cisco just bought Flip and they’re expected to unveil some new products at CES (like, perhaps, Wi-Fi enabled camcorders?) so Flip might just be blowing these things out to make room for the new stuff. Either way, today you get a somewhat reasonably-priced pocket camcorder.

Juniper wants to make the “iPhone of networking”

So Juniper Networks makes network hardware. And they want to make an "iPhone of networking?" What could that be? A small networking device that's insanely possibly and considered polarizing? Nah. It's just a new logo, faster chips, and new software. This is all the beat Cisco, which is kind of futile. Essentially what Juniper is doing is creating an app store for their routers, which is actually kind of cool. Sadly, things are a little rough for developers right now:

FCC filing shows Cisco FlipShare TV

I don’t quite understand why companies still see Sneaker-net as the fastest way to get content from your PC to your TV, but here is the FlipShare TV, a device from Cisco designed to transmit standard or HDMI video to a TV. You will presumably connect a USB key or Flip camera and an interface [...]

Flip announces Flip Channels, adds easier video sharing

Not content to let others do the heavy lifting, Pure Digital, now part of Cisco, has added Flip Channels to their popular - and surprisingly useful - FlipShare software. The software is pre-installed on every Flip devices (we have the HD) and the Channels are yet another way to upload and share your videos in the interwebs. Videos sent to your channel can be viewed at FlipShare.com or using the FlipShare iPhone app, also available today. The software also supports DVD authoring and standard sharing with YouTube and MySpace. I sent a video to myself using the service, a real cinematic magnum opus. You cannot formally embed videos sent to channels - you can embed them on the sly using the actual HTML or grabbing to a site like Posterous - but obviously you can embed videos sent to YouTube.
