Pac-Man bookcase sacrifices shelf space to make room for mouth wedge
Posted on January 26, 2010 | No Comments
Will nobody address the elephant in the room when it comes to this awesomely wonderful Pac-Man bookcase? The mouth wedge eats up (pun intended!) valuable shelf space. But what’s the designer to do? The bookcase could be a full yellow circle to represent Pac-Man’s mouth in the closed position but people would argue, “Hey, it just looks like a yellow circle. Then again if you made the mouth wedge, you’d give up precious shelf space.”

Clamshell home projector cheap, probably of poor quality
Posted on January 20, 2010 | No Comments
File this under "sounds too good to be true". A Chinese artist has designed a projector into a clamshell, with a built in speaker. The unbelievable part? It's only $50. I question what type of quality you are going to get from a projector that only costs $50.

WrapAgain: Save the world one boxed tie and cologne combo gift at a time
Posted on January 12, 2010 | No CommentsThis hit our radar a little late for Kwanzaa but it’s an interesting idea: reusable cloth wrapping paper. The company, called WrapAgain, offers multiple sizes and styles. The stuff is completely reusable and includes ribbons for tying. Here’s how to use them: All Wrapagains are roughly square. Each has two corners with ribbon permanently attached. Lay Wrapagain out [...] -

PSA: Some OLED screens don’t suck under direct sunlight anymore
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No Comments
I loves me some AMOLED screens. They're easier on the battery, easier on the eyes, and the colors tend to be so damned strong that they just about jump off the screen and punch you in the face. I mean, what's not to love? Oh, that's right - they tend to fail miserably as soon as you step outside. Mix one part direct sunlight with one part AMOLED screen, and you'll find yourself with a completely illegible screen.
At least, that used to be the case.. We're not quite sure why they didn't play this up with deafening fanfare, but it seems like Samsung has stealthily solved the direct sunlight dilemma.

TDK develops method to tint touchscreens
Posted on December 24, 2009 | No Comments
I'm not really sure if that's something a lot of gadget freaks were waiting for, but here we go: TDK has found a cost-effective way to tint touchscreens. The company claims it can add color to transparent electrode sheets that serve as the basis of those screens. In the future, electrode sheets will be available in 13 colors, including red, green, blue, aquamarine, purple and black hues.
The main selling point here is to match the body of a given device with its touch screen.

BlackBerry 8130 vs. BlackBerry 9100… fight!
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No CommentsSome of us at Engadget HQ won't ever be sold on the merits of SureType over good, old-fashioned QWERTY, but there's clearly a market for it -- RIM's BlackBerry Pearl series almost singlehandedly catapulted Waterloo into the consumer market, after all, and the upcoming 9100 looks to refine the formula to a crisp, golden brown perfection. Here, we've got one of the originals -- the 8130 -- beaming proudly next to its offspring, and RIM seems to have done a commendable job updating the package in all the right ways (optical trackpad, Bold 9700-esque design elements) while carrying over most of what the old model great. And knowing these guys, you'll be able to get it in a billion colors and special edition designs -- but for now, you can have these comparo shots in any color you want, as long as it's black.BlackBerry 8130 vs. BlackBerry 9100... fight! originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 16 Dec 2009 09:12:00 EST. BlackBerry Storm2 hands-on and impressions
Posted on November 12, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Features, RIM, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA, BlackBerry OS
For a company with the most starched, buttoned-up roots of any major wireless manufacturer, RIM's venture out of its enterprise comfort zone to the consumer space went amazingly smoothly thanks to the introduction of the original Pearl, a phone that's still sold in a variety of colors, configurations, and carriers to this day. At some point, though, it became clear that the industry was moving toward touch -- a space RIM had never dabbled in -- and the trend gave birth to the Storm, a product that had obviously been rushed to market with countless software bugs and a dodgy SurePress concept that caused more problems than it solved. With prototypes floating around in the wild mere months after its predecessor's release, RIM's message was loud and clear earlier this year: "we need to fix the Storm, and we need to do it quickly." Ultimately, it's ended up taking the company just about a year to get the Storm2 to market, a product that attempts to tweak Waterloo's touchscreen strategy just enough to undo a few mistakes and send it down the right path. Mission accomplished? Read on.BlackBerry Storm2 hands-on and impressions originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Now in more colors: Pig-shaped earphones
Posted on November 11, 2009 | No CommentsSome Japanese gadget freaks do have a penchant for weird earphones, that's for sure, meaning these things actually seem to sell. I doubt that otherwise, Tokyo-based accessory maker Greenhouse would have updated the buta (piggy) earphones they gave us in June 2008. It's not a technical update but the same earphones are available in purple and orange now (see the picture above).
I've been wondering how long it'll be before we start talking to all our appliances and gadgets, just like the gang on Star Trek talks to their computers. Typing, pressing buttons, waving wands around in the air: it's all so inefficient! We should be able to simply speak to our gadgets to have them do our bidding. Today we're one step closer to that golden Utopia, with Moshi, the voice controlled alarm clock. Fun video inside!
Yay! for
