Kudos to ESPN’s World Cup live stream

Here's a slight update to my World Cup "all you need to know" post from yesterday. I completely forgot to mention that ESPN3.com is streaming all the games live and totally for free. No need to mess around with shady P2P streams.

  • Sony turning to Intel chips and Android to revitalize TV sales

Sony turning to Intel chips and Android to revitalize TV sales

Look out, Sony is actually trying something new and might announce Intel Atom-powered TVs next month at Google I/O 2010. A new Android released dubbed Dragonpoint is said to run on these TVs and will be just the beginning of Sony's venture into the so-called Smart TV market. The report comes from Bloomberg who sources two people familiar with the matter. The timing is certainly right. Sony hasn't been in the top TV spot for years, constantly losing marketshare to others like Samsung, LG, and even Vizio. Something needs to be done and so Sony is said to be testing a whole line of home entertainment devices that will bring the wonders of the Internet to TVs and Blu-ray players through Android. Logitech is even said to be in on the venture and will contribute a wireless keyboard that will work as a remote. But as sweet as an Android TV sounds, it might not be the right solution -- at least not for the North American market. This could either be a huge win or a fail whale.

South Korea imposes midnight gaming ban to prevent addiction

The South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism doesn't want the country's youth becoming addicted to video games, particularly MMOs, so it's imposing a ban of sorts. Starting in the second half of this year, underage gamers will find their Internet connections disabled for six hours every night, either from midnight to 6am, 1am to 7am, or 2am to 8am. The idea is to ween kids off these games, by hook or by crook, before they become addicted. Gotta start somewhere, I suppose.

  • Federal Court Tells FCC It Does Not Have Authority To Enforce Net Neutrality

Federal Court Tells FCC It Does Not Have Authority To Enforce Net Neutrality

This morning, the U.S Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia dealt the FCC a major blow in its drive to impose net neutrality on the nation’s broadband providers. A panel of three judges ruled that the FCC did not have the authority to order Comcast to slow down BitTorrent traffic, and, more, broadly, that the FCC does not have the authority to enforce net neutrality. The case started as a result of Comcast selectively slowing down certain types of traffic in 2007 — namely, BitTorrent — leading the FCC to order Comcast to stop the practice. Comcast challenged the order, claiming that the FCC didn’t have the authority to mandate net neutrality policy. Today’s ruling affirms Comcast’s stance. This will strike a blow to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski’s recently released broadband plan, but it was not entirely unexpected, and the FCC can still fight back.

Nobody wants the NBCU-Comcast merger to go down

Looks like nobody in the TV industry wants the NBCU-Comcast merger to go down. And who could blame them! ABC, CBS, and Fox affiliates are afraid that, if the merger goes down, it'll cause the clouds to darken and the streets to run red with the blood of something or other. Basically, they're scared that the merger will put the in a very bad position indeed.

EA fellow bitten by his own company’s DRM in Command and Conquer 4, questions the sense of it all

Jeff Green used to work at Games For Windows magazine before taking a sweet gig at EA, but that little fact won't silence his criticism of the DRM found in Command and Conquer 4. He tweeted white-hot rage when, as everyone on the Internet predicted, this "always-on" nonsense worked as intended, and prevented a law-abiding citizen from playing his game.

Amen, Verizon. Amen. Read this bit from Verizon’s statement on 3D. Comcast to begin 100 mbps residential broadband this year

Kudos to Comcast for embracing the year 2009. The nation's largest—and quite possibly worst—ISP has finally committed itself to deploying 100 mbps broadband beginning this year. That will make the FCC happy, what with the loft goals it set with its National Broadband Plan. It's also good news for people who know their way around things like Usenet—taps nose like a spy. Will it be affordable, though?

  • Why are people against the FCC’s National Broadband Plan?

Why are people against the FCC’s National Broadband Plan?

Up until a moment ago, this was going to be a standard "newsy" post: the FCC will announce its National Broadband Plan on Tuesday, here's what it's all about. Then I read the comments of a PC World article discussing that very same plan—many people are outraged that the government would muscle its way into the free market! If Americans wanted fast broadband then the market would provide it on its own terms. That, of course, is complete nonsense: plenty of Americans live in one-ISP towns, and if said ISP provides terrible service, well, though cookies, chico. This is America! Love it or leave it~!
