Top BitTorrent sites are not afraid of BitStalker

Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Cox are busy funding some new, super-duper anti-BitTorrent technology called BitStalker. The difference between it and other anti-BitTorrent systems is that it's said to be accurate. That's a huge development, actually.

What would you even do with a 100 mbps Internet connection?

About a year ago I signed up for Cablevision's Optimum Online Ultra, and aside from a little snafu that I'm trying to fix right now (don't ask!), it's been great. How could you go wrong with a reliable 100 mbps down/15 mbps up connection? Only $100/month, too. Other ISPs are getting close to offering similar speeds, thanks to Docsis 3.0, but some people are wondering: will people even need that sort of speed, and if so, then for what?

Video on demand: The patron saint of Tribeca Film Festival?

Is video on demand the key to making your spiffy indie movie the next Huge Success? Depends on who you ask. The Tribeca Film Festival will experiment with VOD this year, having signed deals with cable providers like Comcast, Verizon FIOS, and Cablevision (a New York-area provider, for those of you who've never heard of it before) to create a Tribeca VOD channel. The thing is, even though putting a film on VOD is a guaranteed way to increase its exposure, there seems to be a bit of a stigma attached there.

Boxee responds to NBC’s Jeff Zucker’s misleading statements to Congress re: Hulu-Boxee relationship

The world's worst manager, Jeff Zucker, who just so happens to be the president of NBC Universal, was on Capitol Hill today trying to persuade lawmakers to allow the proposed merger with Comcast go through. Interesting to note his take on Boxee's relationship with Hulu, which, you'll recall, has been something of a mess. Boxee adds Hulu compatibility, Hulu breaks said compatability, Boxee re-works its code so that Hulu works again, Hulu breaks compatability again, etc. And on and on and on.

Ubisoft’s new DRM scheme requires you to be online whenever you’re playing its games

In other, non-Apple news: Ubisoft has lost its mind. Its latest DRM scheme—the first game to use it will be The Settlers 7, curently scheduled for a Marchrelease—will require that you always be online in order to play its games. That's not a good idea for many reasons. For example, look at poor ol' Devin. He's been fighting Comcast for God knows how long. Needless to say, he'd be SOL if he ever wanted to play the PC version of a Ubisoft game ever again.

Comcast acknowledges 2005 by slowly rolling out remote DVR scheduling

Do you have a Comcast DVR? I do. I also have a TiVo, which has had remote scheduling since 2005. I can almost schedule recordings remotely to my Comcast DVR. Not yet, but almost – it’s not available in Boston yet, apparently. If you have a Comcast DVR, check out www.comcast.net/mydvr/ to see if the service has been switched on in your area.

Comcast settles bandwidth throttling lawsuit for $16 million. That’s 4 hours of revenue.

Whoever says the legal system in this country is broken, well, you're right. Comcast was caught tampering with its customers' packets two years ago. It bitched and moaned like nobody's business, earning itself no friends. The Federal Communications Commission sanctioned the gigantic corporation in what amounted to a slap on the wrist. Big deal. A class action lawsuit was filed, which was just settled for $16 million. Comcast raked in $34.3 billion in revenue in 2008, meaning that this settlement amounts to four hours of revenue. That's right: four hours. Take that, corporate America!

  • TeliaSonera prices LTE service, offers free modem upgrade next year

TeliaSonera prices LTE service, offers free modem upgrade next year

It's pretty easy to fall far enough into the 4G mania trap that you lose sight of the important stuff -- like, say, how much cash you're going to be shedding every month for the delightful privilege of delivering 10Mbps-plus speeds straight to your lappie. Sweden's TeliaSonera -- which just launched service in Oslo and its home turf in Stockholm -- has revealed that users will be paying ridiculously low fees to get 'em to sign up before bumping rates mid-contract, a tactic stolen right out of Comcast's playbook. To start, Stockholm residents will be paying SEK4 a month until July 2010, which works out to just 56 cents, while Oslo folks pay a NOK1 (17 cent) pittance until April 2010. After those rates expire, though, watch out: Stockholm goes up to SEK599 ($83) for 30GB of usage and Oslo bumps to NOK699 ($120). That's a hell of an increase -- but then again, 30GB of service at torrent-friendly speeds is a tempting proposition. Anyhow, the other interesting tidbit of this story is the fact that early adopters (read: anyone lining up at the store to sign up today) will get a free upgrade to Samsung's HSPA / LTE dual-mode modem next year once it's available; the current model is LTE-only, which makes roaming a bit tricky. Kind of them, no?

Ever since the DirecTV's CEO stepped down back in July, there has been talk about someone buying up the satellite TV provider. The latest analysis chatter states Verizon might pick up DirecTV to dramatically increase its marketshare overnight. The purchase would make Verizon second only to Comcast in subs when the DirecTV customer base is added to Verizon's current FiOS subscribers and supercharge Verizon's influence on the market.
