  • Study: TiVo, other DVRs don’t negatively affect TV advertising

Study: TiVo, other DVRs don’t negatively affect TV advertising

Reasonably interesting study coming out of Duke University that says that digital video recorders (TiVo and the like) do not negatively affect television advertising at all. That flies in the face of conventional wisdom, wisdom that says TiVo and its ilk have destroyed the TV business forever. Well, that's just not the case.

  • What’s the deal with these Microsoft Seinfeld ads?

What’s the deal with these Microsoft Seinfeld ads?

I'm not quite sure what this was important to someone, but Todd Bishop of TechFlash sat down with Microsoft to discuss those crazy Seinfeld ads from way back in ought-8. He essentially asked Microsoft "What were you thinking?" and got some interesting replies. Essentially, Microsoft wanted to introduce Windows 7 in a big way but they weren't sure how to go about it. Their marketing execs wanted an icebreaker to invite the world back into the mind of Microsoft. The result? Some of the craziest commercials the company ever released.

  • The making of a great commercial

The making of a great commercial

I didn't watch the Superbowl, so I didn't see any of the commercials. Had I watched, I would have seen -- and thoroughly enjoyed -- this Old Spice body wash commercial. Leo Laporte saw it, though, and was so utterly blown away by it that he got the creative team who created it on for an interview. The interview is illuminating in several aspects, but the whole point of the discussion was to find out whether the commercial was composited using digital tricks, or if it was all done in real time. It's the difference between Star Wars Episode One's digital trickery and the Lord of the Ring's forced perspective visual trickery.

TiVo sez Doritos commercial was the biggest hit in the Super Bowl

Thanks to TiVo, we have a pretty good idea of what the most popular commercials from last night's Super Bow. Survey says: that Doritos commercial with the little kid telling his mom's date to keep his hands off his mother (fat chance!) and off his Doritos. America is a peculiar little country, isn't it, cheese-flavored chips and light beer as far as the eye can see.

Megan Fox introduces Motorola DEVOUR and looks face-slappingly good

For me, the best part of the Super Bowl is the commercials. And after you see this one, you may have to agree. Just note that you'll have to play the video several times over before you realize there's a phone there - the Motorola DEVOUR with MOTOBLUR, to be exact. So, what happens when Megan Fox uses her DEVOUR to send out a hot, wet image via a social network?

    I’m Linux, you’re Linux, we’re all Linux!

I've been a full-time Linux user since 1999. I've been an advocate for Linux and Free Software for most of that time. My advocacy efforts usually stay within my social group, or at FreeGeek Columbus, though occasionally I'll use my posts here to support the penguin. Linux, as an open source project developed by an ad-hoc group of people, often with competing agendas, has succeeded without much mainstream advertising. Microsoft had their laptop shopper commercials, and Apple has had their wildly successful "I'm a Mac" commercials, but there have been few Linux commercials. In the open source style of Linux development, now's your chance to change that state of affairs!

More versions of the “Get a Mac” campaign than you require

Poor ol’ John Hodgman. He’s always been beleaguered and sad-looking – from his first appearance in the Get a Mac ads back in ought-six to his most recent in October 2009. He always looks like he needs a hug, a nice pair of comfortable jeans, and a low-fat, no sugar coffee drink. However, if you can’t [...]

Stupid teens still text and drive because they’re stupid

Despite the fact that you'd have to be a stupid idiot to still text and drive, plenty of teens in the U.S. still text and drive. “By the time [the police] pull you over, the chances are you are going to be done with your text anyway so they can't exactly prove that you were texting.” Good thinking there, sport.

Magical blond woman sells you a Kindle… in song!

Since when did gadget commercials become news? Oh well. I guess cute ladies singing along to fun, hipster songs is now the cultural zeitgeist. I think the most interesting part is that the YouTube poster, one misslovebug83, added the following commentary: Directed by Angela Kohler and Ithyle Griffiths. Starring Annie Little who also sang the song [...]

AT&T and Verizon drop lawsuits, make nice for the holidays

digg_url ='http://digg.com/gadgets/AT_T_and_Verizon_drop_lawsuits_make_nice_for_the_holidays'; Well well, maybe we can all get along after all: AT&T and Verizon just dropped their various advertising-related lawsuits against each other. We can't say we're surprised, considering AT&T lost its request to have Verizon's ads pulled down for the holidays -- spending money to litigate this further would have have simply been a waste, and generated even more bad PR. Now let's just hope these two suck it up and battle it out over service quality and pricing, like they should have been doing all along. Or AT&T can just make some more nonsensical Luke Wilson commercials, whatevs.

Update: Whoa, so this is crazy. We just checked out the other suit that was dismissed, and it turns out that Verizon actually sued AT&T back in July, but not for any damages -- instead, Big Red asked the court to rule that its various "Most Reliable 3G Network" taglines were actually true. That wackiness certainly explains why AT&T felt the need to push back, we suppose, and it makes Verizon's current whining over Sprint's "Most Dependable 3G Network" claims part of a larger, lamer pattern. We've included a shot of the case after the break, check it out.

Let’s blame Leno’s decline in ratings on the DVR rather than trying to acknowledge that media consumption is changing

I'm pretty sure I wrote the complete opposite story several days ago, but who cares, right? It's cold and rainy and there's not much else to talk about. So! As you're probably well aware, Jay Leno's new show isn't doing too well. Why is that? Well, you can try to sit down and analyze if the show is any good or not (note: I haven't seen the show), or if the show's earlier time slot isn't conducive to that type of show. You know, just try to examine what's going on. That, or you can blame those damn DVRs for ruining everything. Let's go with that one.

Two more Family Guy Windows 7 commercials for you to enjoy

Despite what the Internet said a few weeks ago, Microsoft tapped Family Guy to advertise Windows 7. The first one aired last weekend, but the video above and the one after the jump have just been posted to YouTube proving the partnership isn’t dead after all. Watch and enjoy, but don’t expect anything edgy and [...]
