The 30 minute soldering project does have the side effect of rendering compass apps useless while creating a slight bulge in the battery cover. Over the weekend, a fresh WinPho 7 ROM leaked its way onto XDA Developers, and with it came some juicy information.
The leaked ROM was labelled as coming from a device called the HTC "Mondrian" (a nod toward WinPho 7's Metro UI).
Since the leak, the studious fellows on the XDA forum managed to pick apart the ROM and reveal some tasty specs...

Cellbots get Nexus One upgrade, ad-hoc motion control (video)
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsSprint and Verizon may have shunned the Nexus One, but that doesn't mean the handsets can't be put to good use: these Android-controlled, Arduino-powered Cellbots now feature the one true Googlephone as the CPU. At Intel's 2010 International Engineering and Science Fair in San Jose, we got our hot little hands on the DIY truckbots for the first time, and found to our surprise they'd been imbued with accelerometer-based motion control. Grabbing a Nexus One off a nearby table, we simply tilted the handset forward, back, left and right to make the Cellbot wheel about accordingly, bumping playfully into neighbors and streaming live video the whole time. We were told the first handset wirelessly relayed instructions to the second using Google Chat, after which point a Python script determined the bot's compass facing and activated Arduino-rigged motors via Bluetooth, but the real takeaway here is that robots never fail to amuse. Posted on December 22, 2009 | No CommentsNokia's added an interesting new collaborative picture-sharing tool to its Beta Labs stable this week with the introduction of Image Space, which -- like our headline suggests -- is kind of like a crowdsourced Street View as best as we can tell. The idea is that you upload photos to your Flickr account from a GPS- and compass-enabled Nokia phone (the N97 and N97 Mini, for instance) and head on over to Nokia's tool, where the photo metadata is read and used along with others' shots to construct a three-dimensional view of the area. Of course, the key to the success of a product like this is mass buy-in, so c'mon, Nokia owners, these pictures aren't taking themselves -- get outside and start shooting. Augmented reality Twitter 360 app geolocates your friends by their tweets

The Twitter 360 app, just launched by Presselite, is an augmented reality app for your iPhone 3GS which enables you to track your friends by the geolocation of their tweets. The app makes use of the iPhone 3GS's compass to locate the tweeter, then reports back on their location. Now -- if, like us, you want to be able to tweet about the rocking party you're at on a Friday night when you're actually sitting on the couch watching Mama's Family -- don't worry: you can opt out of the geolocation feature. The Twitter 360 app, sure to be a resounding success with creeps the world over, is available now in the iTunes store for $2.99. Check out a video demonstration of it after the break.

Verizon launches hardcore Casio G’zOne Rock
Posted on November 19, 2009 | No CommentsIt doesn't sound as hardcore as its predecessor, the Boulder -- but Verizon's just-introduced Rock is actually the company's most functional Casio G'zOne model to date. Though it looks quite similar to the outgoing model, the Rock's headlining addition is the so-called Triple Sensor -- something certain G-Shock owners might already be familiar with -- which allows the phone to offer an integrated thermometer, compass, and pedometer. It also features touch-sensitive music controls, a 2 megapixel cam, and -- you guessed it -- mil-spec 810F compliance for resistance to the everyday ails of the world like water, dust, and sun exposure. It'll be available online starting tomorrow for $199.99 on contract after rebate, while stores pick it up a few days later on the 30th.

Nokia E72 in stores now, somewhere

Amazon's US pre-order site hasn't heard the news yet nor has Nokia USA's on-line store. Nevertheless, Nokia assures us that the E72 is "in stores now" and should cost €350 (as announced) before taxes and carrier subsidies are applied. Remember, this S60-powered followup to the much loved E71 sports a new 5 megapixel autofocus camera, 3.5-mm headphone jack, microSD slot (4GB included in the box), A-GPS and integrated compass, 10.2Mbps HSDPA, and new optical navigation pad right where a thumb would like it. The E72 also packs the latest version of Ovi Maps and Nokia Messaging with homescreen access to your IM accounts. Now scram buster and let us know if your pre-orders have been filled -- this baby's not going to unbox itself.

It seems the iPhone really tickles the fancy of some Japanese gadget freaks. Following the DIY iPhone digital signage system bag, Tokyo-based Ubiquitous Entertainment now gives us something even cooler: The "iPhone ARider", a futuristic, portable navigation system. The ARider, an experimental project, mainly consists of an iPhone 3GS and a retractable head-mounted display (model T3-A by Scalar Corporation).
