These “Crazy Earphones” sure deserve their name

Tokyo-based Solid Alliance is slowly but surely evolving into a serious competitor for Thanko in the wacky gadget department. So far, the company gave us a USB Ninja knife, a USB Terminator 4 skull and a spectacle-shaped USB stick. And now this: The aptly named "Crazy Earphones" [JP] (that's their official name).

New e-reader “txtr”: Germany’s answer to the Kindle

Deutsche Telekom's e-book reader probably has gone the way of the Dodo, but the Germans are still getting a home-made Kindle competitor. The device, dubbed txtr, was announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair that's happening in Deutschland right now, and it will become available in that country as soon as December 1 (as pre-order). The txtr is the product of a Berlin-based start-up of the same name. It features a 6-inch grayscale e-ink screen, a microSD slot (an 8GB card is included in the package, 1GB flash), an ARM11 CPU (532MHz), 64MB RAM, a micro-USB port and "ultra-long battery life" (company quote). The device is sized at 151×131×12 mm and weighs 281g.

Barnes & Noble eReader leaks and it’s a doozy

Barnes & Noble is apparently trying to sell an ebook reader that will launch next week. Fair enough. The Kindle needs a strong competitor. However, these mock-ups from Giz show something that looks so wild as to be a bit too good to be true. What you're seeing is an 800x600 pixel paper screen with a small "multi-touch" LCD that would allow you to browse books in full color and tap out search terms and notes. It will have support for B&N titles sold in the store and online as well as the ability to download Google books.

Ooma Telo is here, let the free* calls begin

Ooma might be onto something here. The VoIP provider is taking a different path with the Telo system: the phone calls are free. Like, you don't ever have to pay for calling your Mom. You can either use your own phones or the Ooma high-end DECT 6.0 handset. Sounds nice, eh? Too bad there's a huge admission price for the hardware.

HulloMail Launches Visual Voicemail App For BlackBerry

Voicemail. You hate it. We hate it. Damn near everyone hates it – at least, we all hate it in its current form. It’s an antiquated system desperately hobbling on its last leg in an industry where technology moves forward at a nearly absurd rate. While our phones get bigger and better each and every [...]

    WinMo 7 to support Silverlight

WinMo 6.5 might still be a month out, but that hasn’t stopped the mobile folks in Redmond from spilling the beans on an upcoming (albeit foreseeable) addition to WinMo 7 – MS’s own Flash killer competitor, Silverlight 3. The good word comes from Brian Goldfarb, a marketing director for Microsoft’s Silverlight team, who told the Seattle [...]

Awesome Terminator 4 T-600 USB skull

I don't know what it is about Japan loving USB gadgets so much, but they just keep coming and coming. Today Thanko competitor Solid Alliance has announced a USB memory stick [JP] that's designed like a T-600 Terminator skull from Terminator 4 - Salvation (they have a license).

Yes, the N97 Mini exists. No, we have no idea why.

Hey! Have you read our review of the Nokia N97? Do you remember that part where we said “Man! If only they would rerelease this phone slightly smaller a year later, it’d be perfect!”. If you don’t remember that, or if you didn’t read the review, we’ll save you some time: We didn’t say that, [...]

Garmin Nuvifone coming in Q4, just in time for people to still not care

In January of 2008, Garmin announced the Nuvifone. They were a bit light on details at the time (Who would offer it? How much would it cost?) but promised that it would be on the shelves by the third quarter of the same year. Well, that quarter passed. Then the next one. Jump forward a few [...]

Creative made a small splash the other day when the Zii project broke cover. It very well could be the first, real iPod touch competitor thanks to Android and impressive hardware. Here’s two more videos showing off the Zii. The one above is an impressive game demo that demos the accelerometer and the one after [...]

  • Nokia Buys Social Addressbook Startup Cellity For The Team

Nokia Buys Social Addressbook Startup Cellity For The Team

German mobile startup Cellity is getting acquired by Nokia. The sale price was not disclosed, but it is not likely to be more than $10 million to $20 million. About a year ago, Vodafone bought Cellity's competitor Zyb for 31.5 million Euros. Nokia didn't actually buy the whole company, only "certain assets" and the team, which is usually code for a fire sale. Cellity had a Series A round of funding in 2007, led by Mangrove Capital Partners.

  • eBuddy releases iPhone application with support for push notification

eBuddy releases iPhone application with support for push notification

eBuddy, the Dutch startup behind the eponymous mobile communication tool I dubbed the swiss army knife for instant messaging when it debuted an application for the Android platform last May, is announcing one hell of an iPhone application today. For context: eBuddy is a free mobile app that enables users to communicate with others using AIM, Facebook Chat, ICQ, Gtalk, Windows Live Messenger etc. in one, aggregated interface. The application for the iPhone and iPod Touch the company is announcing today has quietly gone live in the App Store last week, but hasn't been promoted in any way since until today. It brings a very strong competitor to the likes of Nimbuzz and fring, both of which have had native iPhone applications for a while now. Where eBuddy differentiates is in its support for Apple's Push Notification Service, which allows a third-party server to ping the service in order to push out notifications to your device over a persistent IP connection.

    The Supertendo Portable SNES

I would buy this portable SNES. It’s probably one of the cleanest portable retro gaming systems ever made. In fact, it sort of looks like something that Nintendo would have made in the 90’s as a competitor to the Game Gear.

But instead this device was constructed with the help of a vacuum-former and a bit [...]
