EVO 4G launch day antics: Sprint’s computers overwhelmed, Radio Shack listing CDMA iPhones?
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsYou might imagine that we're getting a pretty wild variety of EVO 4G-related tips today, seeing how it's launch day and all -- but a couple really stood out for us:
- Sprint's activation system is apparently buckling under the pressure, an issue that's giving us nightmarish flashbacks to iPhone launches of days gone by. We've even heard reports of poor shoppers being "turned away" when reps are stymied by the situation. A wildly successful product is both a blessing and curse, is it not?
- We've gotten multiple tips saying that Radio Shack now lists a $400 early termination fee in its contract for the iPhone on Verizon and Sprint. Our guess is that this is just some generic verbiage, not a sign of an impending CDMA launch, but you never know.

The iPhone Leak Gets Ugly: Police Raid Gizmodo Editor’s House, Confiscate Computers

Wow. Last week, Gizmodo published a massive scoop when they got their hands on what is mostly likely the next iPhone. At the time there was plenty of talk about the legality of Gizmodo's actions (as they admitted to paying $5000 for the device). Now Gizmodo has just published a post saying that editor Jason Chen had four of his computers and two servers confiscated by California's Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team, who entered the house with a search warrant.
Gawker's COO has responded to the actions by citing California Penal Code 1524(g), which states that "no warrant shall issue for any items described in Section 1070 of the Evidence Code", which protects information used by reporters.

Computers are getting smaller and smaller. One need only look at the proliferation of smartphones for proof of this. The trend toward miniaturization is only going to continue. Pretty soon, we'll have computers inside our bodies, rather than carrying them around with us! Scientists have recently successfully inserted silicon chips into living cells. The initial applications for this research seem focused on intracellular sensing and data acquisition, but that's only just the beginning.

Surely Google knows a thing or two about battling state-sponsored Internet censorship.

Windows update causes Windows XP to freak out

There's a number of message board threads wherein people are complaining that, since the update, their computers boot right to a blue screen of death. Sigh.

If you’ve been reading CrunchGear since this past summer, you should probably call a psychiatrist immediately may remember the iKey AK-39 military-grade wrist keyboard, which was basically a small-ish keyboard made for a soldier to wear on his or her wrist in order to manipulate a rugged, portable computer. Well iKey’s got a new keypad now, and it’s an OEM product meant to integrate directly with wrist-worn computers.

Well, if you believe what the Chinese government just said, then it turns out that, in fact, China is the biggest victim of cyberattacks each year. This all stems from an Indian complaint that Chinese cyberattackers had attacked computers belonging to the country's National Security Advisor.

Australian firm developing Doom-like 3D surveillance system

A research outfit there has won a AUS$1.01 million grant from the government to develop a 3D surveillance system that has been described as “Doom-like.” Someone call Anthony Cumia, he could use something like that.

USB 3.0 is just around the corner (kind of), and the first computer hardware manufacturers are getting ready to deliver products supporting the new standard (even though there were some backlashes along the way). Last month, Asus announced the world's first USB 3.0 + SATA 6.0 PCI-E card. In May, NEC said they're going to release the first USB 3.0 host controller.
