T-Mobile expands HSPA+ footprint, now covers over 25 metro areas
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsThe nation's number four carrier is once again pressing ahead with its big HSPA+ expansion, announcing today that speeds of up to 21Mbps (theoretically, of course) will be available in over 25 metropolitan areas covering more than 75 million folks by the end of the month. In conjunction with the expansion, that means that T-Mobile's webConnect Rocket USB modem will be available in the newly-upgraded markets, which include LA, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Tampa, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and New Orleans, among others. Interestingly, the carrier isn't shying away at all on its questionably-truthful "4G speeds" talk despite some pooh-poohing from rivals, so we'll have to see whether the claims hold up once the networks start to build up a little saturation. Follow the break for T-Mobile's release.Continue reading T-Mobile expands HSPA+ footprint, now covers over 25 metro areas

Office Mobile 2010 released, free upgrade for WinMo 6.5 users (update)
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsAfter having gone to public beta late last year, Office Mobile 2010 is now available in conjunction with the retail release of the full desktop version of Office 2010, bringing comprehensive Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editing capabilities to the pocket -- on Windows Mobile 6.5, that is. Yes, granted, Windows Phone 7 is Microsoft's biggest mobile news this year, but there'll be a huge legacy base of 6.5 users out there for a long time to come, and they're pretty much the core audience for the sorts of features that Office Mobile 2010 is offering: SharePoint integration for grabbing documents from the office, a nifty Bluetooth controller mode for PowerPoint presentations, and so on... you know, suit-and-tie stuff. The download is available today from Windows Marketplace for users of 6.5 devices with an older version of Office Mobile installed -- so go on, Tiger, whip up the hottest quarterly reports the world has ever seen. We know you have it in you. Follow the break for Redmond's full Office 2010 press release.
Update: Curious what Office 2010 will look like on Windows Phone 7? Get a glimpse into the not-so-distant-future in Microsoft's video presentation, and fast forward to 52:45 for the good stuff. [Thanks, Kamara B.]Continue reading Office Mobile 2010 released, free upgrade for WinMo 6.5 users (update)

iPhone orchestra at the vanguard of smartphone music-making push
Posted on December 7, 2009 | No CommentsThe relationship between cellphones and music has almost always been a quirky one, producing bouts of the surreal punctuated by an occasional flourish of the sublime. Latest to join the melodic fray are Georg Essl from the University of Michigan and his "mobile phone ensemble." Each of the participating students has designed a noise-making app for his or her iPhone, which is used in conjunction with the built-in accelerometer and touchscreen to make (hopefully beautiful) music. Though we may consider this a gimmick for now, Professor Essl is most enthusiastic about the future prospects of utilizing smartphones to make music with legitimate aspirations. The debut performance of this newfangled orchestra is on December 9, or you can check out a preview in the video after the break.

Looks like Call of Duty 4 will be on the Nintendo Wii this year
Posted on August 5, 2009 | No CommentsHelp me parse the following sentence: “The record-setting and award-winning Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is coming to Nintendo. Activision Publishing, Inc. will release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on Wii on November 10 in conjunction with the launch of Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2.” Does that mean Call of Duty 4 is coming to the Wii, or some other Call of Duty game?

Fortune’s Stanley Bing ‘moderately outraged’ about Microsoft Bing
Posted on May 28, 2009 | No Comments
If you think you're ready for some "moderate outrage," strap in. Those are the exact words that Fortune columnist Stanley Bing has just used to express his feelings about the "brand intrusion" that Microsoft's impending "Bing" search engine has just dumped on his proverbial doorstep.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is testing a fancy new prosthetic arm developed in conjunction with DARPA, the folks that brought us the Internet, and Deka Research, founded by Dean Kamen, creator of the Segway. Unlike a traditional rigid plastic arm, or God forbid a metal hook, the Luke Arm -- a reference to Luke Skywalker's artificial hand from Empire Strikes Back -- allows the wearer to grasp small objects and "perform movements while reaching over their head, a previously impossible maneuver for people with a prosthetic arm."
