AT&T will count Micro-Cell usage towards your data cap – UPDATE
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No Comments
Just when you thought it was safe to love AT&T again, we have another interesting tidbit about their famous 3G Micro-Cell, AKA the "rip-off box."
As you recall, AT&T's MicroCell is being marketed as a way to repair bad connectivity in areas with little or no AT&T reception including, but not limited to, basements, attics, Manhattan, and San Francisco. It essentially piggy backs on your own home network to provide data service and voice to your phone.

HTC EVO 4G will have a HDMI dock, sold through Best Buy
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsOne of the things we bemoaned in our EVO 4G review was the lack of an included Micro HDMI cable in the box, mostly because they're still somewhat hard to find, but that worry can now be allayed thanks to this newly uncovered HDMI dock from HTC. It will work with the Micro-USB port at the bottom of your EVO for data and power transfers, but the main attraction will obviously be its compatibility with the phone's Type D connector and HDMI 1.4 connectivity. Before you rush to your nearest Best Buy to get one, though, there are a couple of caveats. PC Mag's testing of the HDMI output found some TVs only recognized a 480p signal when the EVO was sending out 1080p, and a number of apps, including Sprint TV, refused to send their goods out over the High-Definition Multimedia Interface at all. Might be worth trying before buying in this case, as in most others.HTC EVO 4G will have a HDMI dock, sold through Best Buy originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 May 2010 03:58:00 EST. Remember the college iPad ban? Yeah, not so much
Posted on April 27, 2010 | No CommentsSteve “The Animal” Wildstrom posted a follow-up to the story that colleges were banning the iPad because of some problem with connectivity? Well, they aren’t. They’re “examining” the iPad and telling students that they may not work under their networks, but they’re not banning them outright. Steve writes: As the story made the rounds, problems became outright [...] -

Posted on April 22, 2010 | No Comments
What's that you say? Your Nexus One can't hold a 3G signal worth a damn?
Bummer, dude! In a response to the angry masses demanding a OTA fix to rid them of their woes, Google employee Ry Guy has disclosed that they're no longer "investigating further engineering improvements".

The HD JVC Everio GZ-HM550 lets smartphones control functions via Bluetooth
Posted on March 19, 2010 | No Comments
The JVC GZ-HM550 brings a new set of standards to the table. It isn't the 1920 x 1080 recording or 9 MP stills. Nor is it the 32GB internal flash memory with an SD/SDHC card slot playing backup or even the Konica Minolta HD lens. Nope, it's the novel Bluetooth function that might make a full size camcorder relevant again in a smartphone world.

AT&T’s CEO (of all people): iPad will be driven by Wi-Fi, not 3G
Posted on March 3, 2010 | No Comments
As everybody knows by now, Apple ships the iPad in the Wi-Fi version this month, with the 3G subscription-based model following in April (probably). And as it's AT&T that has secured the right to provide 3G connectivity to iPad users in America, you'd think Randall Stephenson, AT&T's CEO, would be the first person to promote sales of the 3G model.
But it's Stephenson who is now quoted as saying that he doesn't expect "(...) a lot of people out there looking for another subscription (...)" and that the iPad wil mainly be a "Wi-Fi driven product". He made the remarks during a webcast of an investor conference yesterday, adding the iPhone, on the other hand, will continue to play an important role for AT&T "for quite some period of time".

Man, it's a big day for ol' Red when it comes to software updates. All signs are indicating that the near-mythical Android 2.1 update for the Droid is beginning to trickle out right this second, and now they've announced that the BlackBerry Tour 9630 is getting bumped up to OS 5.0.
Nokia Siemens makes lots of mobile networking gear. Most of it provides the connectivity we use every day. But they also make and sell equipment to monitor that connectivity. Such devices are required in the U.S. and much of Europe for law enforcement purposes, and Nokia no doubt makes a pretty penny selling this monitoring equipment to various governments. New details have emerged recently that Nokia sold the same gear to Iran, where the government used it not for law enforcement purposes but to silence dissent. Big surprise!
