We’ve got a truckload of these Walkmans: Back when CE advertising was real, man

Remember back when consumer electronics weren't sexy? It's hard to imagine a world where the Sony Walkman was state-of-the-art and, at best, was popular with a small subset of the world's population. Back in the old days electronics were expensive, even in a relative sense, and this video harkens back to those dark days when men with long hair and creepy voices hawked cheap electronics on TV.

Fisher-Price iXL: E-book reader, music player, games, and more

Electronics for kids have always been a fascination of mine. When I first saw the iXL I immediately thought of the first and best piece of kids consumer electronics, the PXL-2000. Sadly, this device, the Fisher-Price iXL, has no camera - there are two little eyes on it that are actually light sensors - but it has a bright, crisp screen and can play games, MP3s, and you can even paint over photos or color things in like a coloring book.

Lenovo begins $200M buyback of Lenovo Mobile

Of the many trends in consumer electronics, today's announcement by Lenovo highlights two of the biggest: 1) PC makers are desperate to get in on that handheld smartphone action, and 2) China is the place to do it with its 700 million mobile subscribers. That's why Lenovo is putting up $200 million in cash and stock to reacquire its former mobile business sold to a group of investors last year; a move made possible by Lenovo's recent return to profitability. Although Lenovo says its focus will be on the Chinese market, don't be surprised when you see Lenovo branded handsets headed to downtown stores or your favorite high-street shops -- assuming the deal passes shareholder approval, of course.

California Energy Commission delays TV regulation meeting to ‘consider’ submitted opinions

More developments in the absolutely gripping California Energy Commission vs The World drama. The CEC has delayed a meeting wherein it was to discuss the possible implementation of a ban of sorts on the sale of energy-hogging televisions. The Consumer Electronics Agency (it organizes CES every year) has been fighting against the measure, arguing that any such regulation would necessarily raise TV prices, stifle innovation, etc.

How long will we be playing the Xbox 360 and PS3?

Questing in Kalimdor, I received word that, yes, the Wii has dropped in price to $199. After I logged out, I got to thinking: how long can this last? Like, the Wii (and the PS3) came out three years ago, and the Xbox 360 came out four years ago. Given how quickly consumer electronics evolve, how long we can expect to play these systems?
