    Engadget Mobile Podcast 040 – 05.27.2010

Hey y'all, we are back! Was it worth the wait? Things have been a little loco since we last rapped at ya, so you know there's going to some strange stuff going down in this podcast -- EVO 4G analysis from the pedestrian (kickstand worship) to the positively Ziegleresque (Froyo - delicious enough to be worth the wait?), and speculation on a few devices found in the bottom of executives' dumpsters. Also, at the end of the show Chris turns into a robot. A real robot. Don't ask us how he does it, but you can hear it in his voice. Amazing!

    Host:
    Chris Ziegler
    Special Guest: Ross Miller
Producer / Special Guest: Trent Wolbe
Music: Daestro - Light Powered (Ghostly International)

    00:04:47 - EVO 4G
    00:22:20 - Froyo
    00:40:50 - HTC Aria for AT&T
    00:46:37 - Droid Shadow
    00:53:57 - iPhone 3G discontinued?
    00:59:04 - BlackBerry 9800
    01:01:08 - LG Fathom

Hands-on with MobileHelp, for when Dad has fallen and he can’t get up

MobileHelp is a small device that works “beyond the home” allowing your loved one to call for help at a press of a button. The device also also tracks your loved one via GPS and, when they sound an alarm, MobileHelp’s staff will contact them directly and call the proper authorities. My mother tried this at [...]

  • Current T-Mobile customers having hard time upgrading to HTC HD2 (updated with statement)

Current T-Mobile customers having hard time upgrading to HTC HD2 (updated with statement)

First, the good news: T-Mobile's HD2 is in stock online and apparently at many corporate-owned retail locations. Now, the bad: the carrier seems to be putting these things on lockdown right now, only offering them to new customers signing up for a fresh contract. This is a tactic T-Mobile has applied in the past, so we're not terribly surprised to see them do it here, too -- but it's still a disappointment, especially considering that the phone has been out for a few weeks now. Just goes to show you that a net add is worth considerably more than a loyal customer is (particularly one who's still under contract), but in the meantime, might we recommend the iHTC HD2?

Update: We've received an official statement from T-Mobile on the matter, and it sounds like they're "giving priority to existing customers" with new inventory coming in. Sweet! Here's the full verbiage:
"T-Mobile understands the inventory challenges for the HTC HD2 and continues to work diligently in order to supply our customers with this highly popular product. As we receive additional inventory of the HTC HD2, we are giving priority to our existing customers. However, the demand for the device is still exceeding our supply.

Depending on the location, some T-Mobile retail stores may still have some HTC HD2 inventory available. We suggest that interested customers contact their local T-Mobile store via phone before visiting to see if they have the HTC HD2 available. If they do not have the HTC HD2 available, some stores are taking names and contact information, and will be able to notify customers once that location has product available."

Contact microphones are all sorts of fun. You can get some crazy sounds by sticking them on non-assuming, everyday items. Or you can make a tiny thumb piano with a tube clamp and some pieces of guitar string like Ranjit Bhatnagar up there. Check it out. [via MoonMilk and Make]

Pac-Man bookcase sacrifices shelf space to make room for mouth wedge

Will nobody address the elephant in the room when it comes to this awesomely wonderful Pac-Man bookcase? The mouth wedge eats up (pun intended!) valuable shelf space. But what’s the designer to do? The bookcase could be a full yellow circle to represent Pac-Man’s mouth in the closed position but people would argue, “Hey, it just looks like a yellow circle. Then again if you made the mouth wedge, you’d give up precious shelf space.”

Boots transform into boots with spikes

These boots are a smart idea. I don’t know if they’re $200 smart but that’s Hammacher Schlemmer’s problem, I guess. They’re standard-looking leather boots that feature reversible cleats on the underside. So wear them outside in the winter and when it gets really icy, deploy the spikes for a nice non-slip grip.

ARM shows off its Mali mobile processors with impressive 3D demos, also bowling (video)
It's been a long time since ARM last bragged about its Mali line of high-end mobile processors, telling us back in March how the 200 and 400 models were going to bring high-def 3D performance to tiny gadgets. Finally we have some videos to go with the hype, two demonstrations showing the phone's admittedly impressive polygon-shuffling tech. The demos feature the lower-end Mali-200 rendering everything at 720p, playing some simple videos and also handling a rather complex 3D contact navigation system that looks both flashy and painful to use. ARM says "play a game of bowling like never before and you'll get hooked by the magic of Mali." Click on through already, and prepare to be hooked.

T-Mobile posts Sidekick contact recovery instructions

That Microsoft / T-Mobile tag team has been doing a pretty decent job of cleaning up the disaster area left by the Sidekick data loss, and now the first item on the recovery menu is ready for collection. Sidekick users can hit up the My T-Mobile webpage to download their contacts and then restore them either to their Sidekick or whatever device they've replaced it with. Extensive how-to instructions are available at the read link, which also furnishes us with the reassurance that "Microsoft/Danger continues its efforts to recover pictures, calendar entries and to-do lists, which may be available in the future."

    [Thanks, Abe G.]

Just a quick show this week live from the floor of CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment 2009, where we're refreshingly seeing tons of Android gear; what we're not seeing a whole lot of is co-host Sean Cooper who's on vacation this week, so Chris holds it down with a half-hour of rambling to himself. Enjoy!

Poken, those little thingers that you touch together to trade contact info we talked about last SXSW, are now smaller. The Poken Pulse is a 2GB memory key with Poken RFID scanning built in. When you tap your Poken onto another person's Poken it trades contact information and, um, to quote the website "we’re glowin’ green, killin’ two ‘birds,’ and savin’ trees." Right.

Seems I’ve also been roped in by Sarah Lacy to act as gopher and occasional co-host for her backstage interviews with some of the event’s more interesting experts and pitchers. First up was Penn Jillette, fresh off stage from pitching the Penn and Teller iPhone app. The application essentially lets you text Penn & Teller after which they’ll perform some magic over the air. The way they do it is by fooling users into thinking they’re using iPhone applications to contact the magicians, but what it really uses is an overlay that mimics the iPhone interface. Nifty, ey?
