TV Guide spins its own Android app
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No Comments
Having already taken on the iPhone last year, TV Guide has turned its attention to Android with a new mobile app developed in cooperation with software house Roundbox. By all accounts, it's your run-of-the-mill TV listing grid, though TV Guide injects some "breaking entertainment news, scoops, episode recaps and daily TV hot lists" just to spice things up a bit. We tried to put it through its paces on a Froyo-equipped Nexus One here but it just kept crashing once we selected our provider, so your mileage may vary. Follow the break for TV Guide's full press release.Continue reading TV Guide spins its own Android app

SIGVerse simulates cooperation between humans and robots in virtual space
Posted on May 4, 2010 | No Comments
Japan's National Institute of Informatics (NII) has developed SIGVerse, a piece of software that makes it possible to simulate how human beings and "intelligent" robots cooperate in a virtual space. The goal is to assess how robots can be "trained" to better work together with humans one day - without actually having to build robot prototypes in real life.

Japanese university develops Robo-Skateboard
Posted on March 31, 2010 | No Comments

That DIY Segway skateboard is about to get some serious competition.

Scientists create coevolved Predator and Prey bots
Posted on February 1, 2010 | No Comments
Some scientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne have built "evolving" predator and prey robots designed to, in short, learn from each other. Read that again: While we're worried about Taylor Swift and and Lady Gaga, robots are now teaching each other how to hunt us.
The robots use Darwinian Selection to decide how to escape each other or work together to avoid collisions.

Hello Kitty Music Player Premium
Posted on December 4, 2009 | No Comments
The Hello Kitty Music Player Crystal, made in cooperation with luxury brand Swarovski, I blogged about in October drew the attention of quite a few (mostly female) CrunchGear readers. One of the problems was the price: $150 for a fairly basic music player isn't cheap. But now Japan-based Mouse Computer, in cooperation with iriver Japan, is offering a similar device. And their so-called Hello Kitty Music Player Premium [JP] is less expensive.

Video: Two robots playing baseball (kind of)
Posted on July 24, 2009 | No Comments
Baseball is a national sports in Japan and so it was just a matter of time for this baseball- and robot-crazy country to invent (industrial) robots that are able to play baseball. The 2-robot team can't run around and doesn't look human, but both machines are able to throw and bat the ball in quite an impressive way.
This is one of the reasons why I live in Japan and nowhere else: In order to get more people to donate blood, the Japanese
