Motorola Droid 2 stars in its first video, touts 1GHz CPU and 512MB of RAM?

It was inevitable, really, that a phone as widely leaked as the Droid 2 would end up caught on video. Doing the honors for us today are Android and Me, who've compared the new Droid to the classic variant. Funnily enough, they didn't find too much deviation from Motorola, describing the two handsets as "virtually identical," with the major physical change being the replacement of the previous keyboard's navigation pad with arrow buttons. The front end's soft buttons have also changed to Moto's Blur options, but otherwise you're still looking at a 3.7-incher with a 5 megapixel imager. The big improvement seems to have been under the hood with a new 1GHz TI OMAP3630 processor and 512MB of RAM (PowerVR SGX530 graphics unit remains the same) driving the Droid 2 to some robust benchmark scores. Of course, we don't see the handset booted up in this hands-on video, so treat these specs and results as provisional until we hear from the official horse's mouth in a couple of days.

    [Thanks, Naveed]

How to really turn off that damn vuvuzela noise

A couple of days ago, we told you about a method for removing the noise from the vuvuzela, using a simple filter. Well, it turns out that the filter doesn't exactly work as advertised. The good news however, is that Consumer Reports found a filter that does work, and they were kind enough to share the information. Details after the jump.

Get swyping: Swype for Android available now in English, Spanish and Italian

We told you this was coming: Swype has just made it possible for any Android handset owner to download their innovative touch-screen enabled text-input application straight from the website. Which means a whole lot of people can henceforth start challenging that Guinness World Record for speedy textin' using Swype. Up until today, Swype came pre-installed on only a fraction of available Android phones (including the all new Motorola Droid X) due to its licensing business model, although the company did open up to 25,000 eager beta testers a couple of months ago - most of whom seem to have completely fallen in love with it. Well, anyone can download it now, but only for a limited time (a couple of days) and with a somewhat limited feature set. Important: it won't work if you have a phone that came pre-installed with Swype and support will be via Swype's forums only.

    Samsung Galaxy S preview

Just because the US has gone gaming crazy these past couple of days doesn't mean the smartphone world has stopped turning. Samsung trotted out its Galaxy S handset last night in London, and we were naturally there to try and glean a better understanding of where this 4-inch Android 2.1 device fits in our wishlist hierarchy. It's quite the stat sheet stuffer, as we're sure you're aware, and it strikes an alluring figure for those looking to get on the true do-it-all smartphone bandwagon. Check out our latest impressions -- replete with video and a whole gallery dedicated to the Super AMOLED screen's performance in sunlight -- just past the break.

  • Sprint fires employee who leaked weak EVO 4G sales numbers

Sprint fires employee who leaked weak EVO 4G sales numbers

You know the backstory by now: Sprint boasted that the EVO 4G was its fastest selling phone ever a couple of days after hitting the American market, before abruptly correcting itself and admitting that the EVO's sales were in fact in line with those achieved by the Pre last summer. What you, and we, didn't know till now, however, is that Sprint's self-correction was sparked off by an employee with a curious mind and posting privileges over on the xda-developers forum. On June 6, according to MobileCrunch, this unnamed hero of truthiness browsed Sprint's internal inventory system and nailed down a figure of 65,500 sold units from Sprint's own stores -- a stat far south from what Sprint would announce a day later. That number ultimately found its way onto the message board, and though it obviously shouldn't be taken as authoritative (or exhaustive), it was enough to get Sprint to hit the auto-correct button and part ways with the activist member of staff. Harsh.

    [Thanks, Carol]

    Sanyo’s new 2K projector boasts industry-high 10,000 lumens brightness

If you thought the Sanyo 3D projector we've shown you a couple of days ago was impressive, think again: today the company announced [JP] the LP-HF1000L, a projector for "professional use" that not only boasts 2K (2,048×1,080) resolution but also produces 10,000 lumens brightness. According to Sanyo, no other projector in the industry can keep up with that number (via AC 100V, at least).

A little update on Conan O'Brien, seeing as though we spent a couple of days there talking about his every move. AT&T wants to make sure your iPhone works at SXSW

Anyone who's been to SXSW in the past few years, ever since the iPhone's release, knows that the AT&T network absolutely explodes during the festival. Texts, if they ever make it through, take hours; calls are dropped at an alarming rate, even by AT&T standards; and Internet access is essentially impossible. It's hard for AT&T to keep up because Austin, any other week of the year, isn't absolutely flooded with iPhone users mucking about, asking where the Facebook party is, or if they're on the list for the Gawker party. (I'm on the list, but I'm not going this year so it doesn't matter.) The point is, AT&T has its hands full that week, so let's give them an A for effort for trying to prevent another iPhone meltdown this year.

Boxee and Redux working to democratize the web

Finding quality video content on the web is hard. There's too much porn, or too many lolcats derivatives, and not enough crazy music videos involving LEGOs. Following John's Posterous is one good way to find serendipitous content you might enjoy, but there's only one John, and he does occasionally sleep. If only someone would make an app to crowdsource my web viewing, so that only the best of the best floats up to my screen. Oh, look! Redux does exactly that. And today they're announcing their new Boxee app, to bring all that great content to your television, so you can passively enjoy all that the web has to offer without all that tedious typing and clicking!

RC model of Star Trek USS ENTERPRISE swimming underwater (video)

I'm not an RC gadget expert, but modding static model kits of space ships so that they're water-proof and can be RC-controlled to make them then "fly underwater" seems like a very, very geeky thing to do to me. Take this 1/350 scale replica of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A space ship from Star Trek, for example. Some person [JP] in Yokosuka, Japan, bought the static kit and transformed it into a space ship that can move and be RC-controlled underwater. The people belonging to the "underground" circle of these self-made gadgets call themselves "Aqua Modelers" and meet up on a regular basis [IT] to exchange ideas and show off their works each year. The last one apparently just took place a couple of days ago. Video after the jump.

Motorola Milestone firmware coaxed into Droid, multitouch ensues (video!)

If you thought it'd be easy to move code back and forth between two nearly-identical Motorolas running Android... well, you'd apparently be right. Unfortunately, taking clear video of the completed task proves, as ever, to be an insurmountable task. Of course, the Android hacking community has overcome pretty much every other roadblock it's encountered so far, so it shouldn't come as any surprise to learn that the Milestone's firmware has been successfully ported today over to its big, loud American cousin, the Droid, thanks to the work of AllDroid's Eugene and Barakinflorida who risked their own device for your gain. Our understanding is that the ROM's cooked in some regard -- it's not bone stock, which makes sense if for no other reason than the fact that the Droid's got a completely different radio -- but fortunately, that all-important multitouch support carries over from the Euro side. We're hearing direct from AllDroid's founder, Brent Fishman, that the ROM should drop in a couple of days. Until then, follow the break for a video of the build in action.

P.S. Don't worry Droid owners, Google Navigation is still functional with this build.

Update: Better video added after the break! Man, these guys learn fast.
