Nokia N900 drops to $369, unlocked
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsHard to believe but after all this time the N900 remains the most powerful handset in Nokia's vast collection of cellphones. No other Nokia handset even comes close and that won't change until Nokia launches the Symbian^3-powered N8 or the MeeGo-powered N9. So if you've got the dough and a certain inclination to write Python scripts on a Friday night, you might want to think about sliding $369 (down from $649 at launch or $479 currently at Nokia USA) Espoo's way for a crack at the ARM Cortex A8 slider. Sure, it's not the freshest face on the block, but the development community will certainly help eek-out every last bit of value for many months to come.

OnLive now running on Macs

Get thee to the downloadery for OnLive now works on Macs. You can download a small file to bring up the OnLive client and play Assassisn's Creed and other exciting games.
As you recall, OnLive is essentially a game streaming engine for Macs and PCs. All of the heavy lifting happens in the cloud and the company simply streams audio and video to your desktop. Think of it as video-on-demand on crack.

Droid Incredible gets rooted at long last
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsThe Incredible wait is finally at an end -- HTC's finest handset on Verizon had proven quite the tough nut to crack, but at long last it has succumbed to the efforts of some industrious root-hungry coders. You should be mindful that progress is still at a very early stage, and hacking your own Incredible is said to be both "very hard" and "not very repeatable." The important thing though, is that it's happened, and we're now probably only a few days removed from a user-friendly patch that lets us truly do whatever we might want with that handsome device. They say roots are an important part of a balanced diet, and this one should go very nicely with a bit of Froyo, don't you think?

Posted on June 1, 2010 | No CommentsOften, iFixit needs to wait for a product to be released before it can spend a few hundred bucks buying one and tearing it asunder -- but in the case of the EVO 4G, Google's pre-release of units to attendees at IO appears to have been just the kind of event these guys needed to get in the door early. Taking the phone apart is described as a "wonderfully easy" process, and changing the screen's glass is said to be pretty easy as well -- good news considering how easy it'll probably be to crack those 4.3 inches of pure WVGA glory. There aren't any surprises in terms of silicon, but we've got one tip for you, HTC: if you're going to take this color-the-inside-of-the-phone business seriously, would you do us a favor and match the color of the circuit board, too? Even a 10-year old can replace an iPhone’s glass

Don't cry to AT&T or Apple if you crack your iPhone screen. They don't care. Besides as this pictures and Cnet story clearly shows, with a bit of patience, nearly anyone can replace an iPhone screen. This 10-year boy used a $20 kit available from 3gcrackedglass.com to replace the glass on his dad's iPhone and in turn saved him from the $200 repair bill that Apple would have charged for the same service.

Logic Wireless 150LGW projector phone reminds us of that Bolt we once saw
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No CommentsRemember the Bolt from CES 2009? Man, that was ages ago. If you'll recall, projector phones were actually all the rage for around 4.67 minutes at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, and ever since we've been dealt months of nothing alongside one lone ranger of something in the LG eXpo. Evidently Logic Wireless is hoping that we'll forget all about the Bolt that never shipped and instead focus on the next best thing: the 150LGW. Available for order now at Skymall (of all places), the projector phone looks significantly slimmer and more stylish than the company's first crack, and aside from the inbuilt PJ, there's also twin SIM card slots, dual cameras, an Office file viewer, quad-band GSM radio, Bluetooth and Symbian running the show. We aren't too sure we'd be willing to shell out $499 without any proof that this thing is worth its salt, but you can bet we'll be on the hunt for it once CES 2010 opens up next week.

Ford to give Sync some App Store flavor, opening API to devs in 2010
Posted on December 18, 2009 | No CommentsFord has already shown it can tie the controls of Sync-enabled vehicles to the music and contacts databases of drivers phones and PMPs and though it may take time before our emotions can be detected, the next step is extending that connectivity to downloadable apps on those devices. Since Sync first debuted, the explosion of the App Store concept has meant nearly every smartphone owner is packing plenty of ways to access and use information from the internet, but without an easy way to interact with it while driving. Extending access to vehicle controls could lead to programs like Pandora or Google's turn by turn navigation letting users change stations with their existing stereo knobs, or listen to directions via the in-car system by simply updating their existing software. The first ones to get a crack at it? A few university students, check after the break to see what they came up with given just a few weeks to test system out.

U.S. Air Force using the PS3 for ‘urban surveillance’ research

Mini robot climbs up and down water and gas pipes to inspect them

The robot can climb up and down pipes as long as they are made of iron as it uses a magnet for its magic.

The Register has a nice piece on hacking the Sony Reader, allowing you to install all sorts of goodies onto the Linux-powered e-reader. I've never been a big fan for the Sony Reader but clearly hackers prefer this device over the closed Kindle.
