White next-gen iPhone apparently materializes in full form
Posted on May 23, 2010 | No CommentsClearly a white front plate was not enough to satisfy curiosity. Though we aren't able to verify this ourselves, Chinese site Apple.pro has a couple shots of what it claims to be the white next-gen iPhone, almost fully assembled (the front plate looks like it hasn't been snapped in all the way) and casually lounging next to the black model we've gazed upon so many times at this point. Is this enough for us to trust and comfortably change our palette preferences? Nah, but surely 15 days until expected confirmation can't be too excruciating of a wait.

The ExoPC’s release date and GPU, everyone

We've been following the ExoPC's development with a bit of curiosity and excitement. It's one of the only tablets, along with the Notion Ink Adam and WePad, that has a chance to grab a bit of marketshare away from the iPad. The ExoPC just got a bit more interesting, too. Blog Geek just got confirmation that the slate will use the Broadcom BCM70012 or Crystal HD, which should have enough juice to provide silky-smooth 1080p HD video playback. Best of all, though, the tablet is set to come out in within a few months.

Microsoft’s ‘Menlo’ working towards a mobile future without Windows CE?
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No CommentsSince Courier's now a mystery unearthed -- and subsequently sent six feet under -- it looks like we need new secret Microsoft projects to pique our curiosity. Enter the ever-connected Mary Jo Foley with some investigative notes into "Menlo," which seems to be a future replacement of Windows CE "with Windows NT inside of mobile devices." The associated graphics platform would be "Experiment 19" (not quite as interesting a codename, we agree). Presumably heading up Menlo is Galen Hunt, a researcher from the Singular project, joined by other Microsoft brains Ruben Olinsky and (at least at some point) Kerry Hammil. It's always surprising how much info we can glean from LinkedIn, but we digress: Hunt's associated profile says Menlo "[combines] OS, UX, and applications research to explore the future of computing when mobiles becomes users primary PCs." Some bigger picture conjecture seems to center around Menlo having a Silverlight-based UI and boasting improved compatibility between itself and Windows desktop apps. We've seen the supposed front of the iPhone 4 (which, according to the ol' mill of rumors, will be called the "iPhone HD"). In fact, we've seen it twice. Now we've got the other half of the supposed-sandwich: the totally unconfirmed back of the device.

Remember the Linux wristwatch?

With all the hype about the iPad, and indeed, the hype about smaller and smaller mobile computing devices, I thought I would remind you all that there was at one point a Linux-powered wristwatch! This marvelous curiosity was discussed back in 2001, when it ran kernel version 2.2.1, had 8 megabytes of flash memory, and had IrDA (remember that?!). It even had a touchscreen display, and had a PIM suite that "consists of an organizer, WML browser, to-do list and a calculator" all in 51K of code!

Next Mars rover to have frikkin’ lasers

Apparently NASA saw something when they sent up the last Mars rover, because the next one is going to be packing heat. The next rover, named Curiosity, is scheduled to launch next year and will be equipped with an analysis system that uses high-energy laser pulses to help find out what Mars is made of.

Report: Acer will launch an ultra-thin notebook this year

Let's not forget Acer's quest to overtake HP as the number 1 computer maker in the world. That's important to remember as the company is reportably getting into the ultra-thin notebook market this year along with making a Chrome OS netbook and ebook reader. 2010 will be Acer's year as the company lays outs its plans, which, surprisingly, doesn't include outing a iPad-ish tablet clone.
The Acer Timeline series lead the industry into the CULV game last year, but even those thin laptops look huge next to a MacBook Air or Dell Adamo XPS. So that brings us to right now as a report just surfaced claiming that sometime this year Acer will launch a true ultra-thin notebook based on Intel's next-gen Capella ULV processors that bring conventional notebook performance to ultra-thins.

Nokia to have private Connecting People event alongside Mobile World Congress
Posted on December 21, 2009 | No CommentsCES 2010 might be just around the corner, but it sounds like Nokia's next big move might be at Mobile World Congress in February. Well, not quite at MWC: Espoo actually pulled out of the tradeshow earlier this year, but now we're hearing that there will be a private Connecting People event in Barcelona on the first and second days of MWC. That's particularly interesting because one of the reasons Nokia pulled out of MWC was to increase focus on its own Nokia World conference, so we're guessing nothing major will be coming out in Spain -- but we can't help but agree with this poignant Babelfish translation of Engadget Spanish's post on the same subject: "Fulfilled mission, Nokia: you have been able to attract our curiosity."

The folks on the xda-developers forums have done the duty of tearing down HTC's impressively skinned Windows Mobile 6.5 device. Not much to glean from the snapshots, but if you do harbor some strange technologically-inclined curiosity and would never consider ripping up the phone yourself, hit up the read link for more pictures.

It must be, like, a new thing, otherwise I cannot understand the curiosity over a newly updated iPhone app called “Hottest Girls”. It's $1.99, and includes pictures of women, some of whom are topless. It's almost like living in Europe, where topless women can be found on magazine covers and advertisements.
