webOS App Catalog, Palm Developer Center down leaving ‘install failed’ messages in their wake
Posted on May 15, 2010 | No CommentsJust a day before the Pre Plus launches on AT&T, current Palm owners are experiencing all kinds of problems related to the App Store and their Palm Profiles. Reports indicate the problems started last night, since then users haven't been able to download new apps or update existing ones from the catalog, while those unlucky enough to have tried a reset have had trouble signing back into their Palm profile in the cloud, and have lost some information like call logs and had to resync their various accounts in webOS. The Palm Developer Website is also down, tossing a "back in a few hours" sign in the window and going out for a few afternoon mimosas. For now, PreCentral posters recommend taking the device off of network time and resetting it to any day prior to today which will allow apps to install and update without issue. A post on the official Palm blog indicates things should be back to normal "soon" so AT&T customers can hopefully avoid any date/time trickery just to get their Foursquare checkins going.

Google changes Nexus One plans, will stop selling handsets online
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/Google_to_stop_selling_Nexus_One_online'; Although Google launched the Nexus One with grand plans to radically change the way consumers purchased phones and service, it looks like the experiment has fizzled to an end -- the company just announced that will eventually stop selling handsets online and instead partner with carriers to sell the N1 in-store while using its website to promote "a variety of Android phones available globally." Google says customers simply want a hands-on experience before buying a phone, but we'd say the lack of subsidies from any carrier except T-Mobile and some serious customer service issues probably played in killing Google's original sales strategy -- and of course, both Verizon and Sprint essentially refused the N1 in favor of the bespoke Incredible and EVO 4G. We'd also say that Android as a whole will remain unaffected, since the Nexus One was never a huge seller, but it's still rare that a company simply gives up a business model like this, and we don't know if Google will ever follow up with a successor to the Nexus One. The Google Phone is dead, people -- long live the Google Phone.
Update: We just asked Google about future devices and support for current Nexus One owners, here's what they said:
On the future: We will continue working with our partners to bring cutting-edge new Android handsets to market, but we have nothing to announce right now.

Hulu not switching to HTML 5 for the iPad

VP Eugene Wei might have overstepped recently when he posted to the Hulu company blog that they are looking at HTML 5, but don't expect it to meet their needs any time soon. This is disappointing to iPad users since the current Hulu player won't work for them.

Last month, we've shown you a teddy bear robot that's made by Fujitsu and looked pretty cute - on pictures. But now, after seeing a video (embedded below) of the bear actually "communicating" with a human, I'm not so sure anymore if it's really a good idea to use this to entertain elderly or younger people (the robot's target group).

HDMI coming to more netbooks in 2011

HDMI can be found on a few netbooks right now, but it's set to become standard next year when Intel's Cedar Trail-M platform hits the tiny lappies. Most of the current netbooks with HDMI are built around Nvidia's ION GPU platform, which also drives up the cost. But by moving HDMI support to the CPU, it should come on nearly every netbook.

Rumor: Landor Associates working on upcoming iPhone campaign for Verizon

The rumor mill is churning about a company called Landor Associates "working on an advertising campaign" for Verizon for the upcoming iPhone (you know, the one that the police knocked down Jason Chen's door down to get generally more information about?). Ladnor has been working on Verizon branding since 2007 and is, according to a tipster, now hard at work preparing for the iPhone HD launch. The Verizon team there is led by Brad Scott.

Current T-Mobile customers having hard time upgrading to HTC HD2 (updated with statement)

First, the good news: T-Mobile's HD2 is in stock online and apparently at many corporate-owned retail locations. Now, the bad: the carrier seems to be putting these things on lockdown right now, only offering them to new customers signing up for a fresh contract. This is a tactic T-Mobile has applied in the past, so we're not terribly surprised to see them do it here, too -- but it's still a disappointment, especially considering that the phone has been out for a few weeks now. Just goes to show you that a net add is worth considerably more than a loyal customer is (particularly one who's still under contract), but in the meantime, might we recommend the iHTC HD2?
Update: We've received an official statement from T-Mobile on the matter, and it sounds like they're "giving priority to existing customers" with new inventory coming in. Sweet! Here's the full verbiage:"T-Mobile understands the inventory challenges for the HTC HD2 and continues to work diligently in order to supply our customers with this highly popular product. As we receive additional inventory of the HTC HD2, we are giving priority to our existing customers. However, the demand for the device is still exceeding our supply.
Depending on the location, some T-Mobile retail stores may still have some HTC HD2 inventory available. We suggest that interested customers contact their local T-Mobile store via phone before visiting to see if they have the HTC HD2 available. Weaker Wii sales: Nintendo’s profit drops for first time in 6 years

Nintendo in Japan released its annual fiscal report [ENG, PDF] today, and even though pretty much every financial key figure took a nose dive, things still look pretty good on the whole. The company racked up $15.2 billion in revenue last financial year (which ended March 31, 2010), down 22% from last year. Operating profit dropped 36% to $3.8 billion, while net profit - for the first time in six years - dropped to $2.4 billion, compared with $2.9 billion a year earlier.

iPhone app review: GoodReader

One of the things I've always wanted to do with my smartphone -- whether it was my original Palm Treo 650, or my current iPhone -- was to read books while on-the-go. Unfortunately, the screens on these smartphones have all been way too small to make reading comfortable for anything more than a screenful or two. Even reading long email messages can be a strain on my eyes. It doesn't help that many e-books are formatted for a full screen, so they require vertical and horizontal scrolling to read. Thankfully, GoodReader exists, and only costs a buck.

Why 960×640 Makes Sense For the iPhone HD

We alluded yesterday that the higher resolution screen on the Phantom iPhone of Redwood City would more-than-likely have double the horizontal and vertical pixels of the current iPhone screen (therefore quadrupling the pixel count), and now the ever-reliable John Gruber has weighed in on the likelihood of a new-and-improved double-PPI resolution.
The main take-away here is that while the current iPhone screen is gorgeous, Apple are trying to make the screen on the next iPhone look as clear as the print found in expensive glossy magazines.

Nicholas just voiced a valid question in the always-entertaining but private CrunchGear chatroom, "Why would I pay $1,500 for a Core 2 Duo in 2010?" He then answered it by saying, "I wouldn't." Well said, sir. Apple's current crop of notebooks are a slap in the face to its customers, but maybe Apple will finally catch up to HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway, Lenovo, Alienware, Asus, MSI, Sony, and Toshiba next week if this rumor pans out.

Digitimes analyst predicts iPad…nano?
Posted on April 8, 2010 | No CommentsEarlier today, a senior analyst at Digitimes research claimed that Apple is planning to launch a 5 to 7 inch version of the iPad in the first quarter of 2011. The smaller iPad will be priced below $400 and will target consumers who focus mainly on reading and do not have a high demand for text input. For comparison, the current iPad has a 9.7 inch display while the iPod touch has a 3.5 inch display, but both the Nook and Kindle have a 6-inch screen.
