  • EVO 4G launch day antics: Sprint’s computers overwhelmed, Radio Shack listing CDMA iPhones?

EVO 4G launch day antics: Sprint’s computers overwhelmed, Radio Shack listing CDMA iPhones?

You might imagine that we're getting a pretty wild variety of EVO 4G-related tips today, seeing how it's launch day and all -- but a couple really stood out for us:
    • Sprint's activation system is apparently buckling under the pressure, an issue that's giving us nightmarish flashbacks to iPhone launches of days gone by. We've even heard reports of poor shoppers being "turned away" when reps are stymied by the situation. A wildly successful product is both a blessing and curse, is it not?
    • We've gotten multiple tips saying that Radio Shack now lists a $400 early termination fee in its contract for the iPhone on Verizon and Sprint. Our guess is that this is just some generic verbiage, not a sign of an impending CDMA launch, but you never know.
Keep us updated with your launch day travails, folks!

[Thanks to everyone who sent these in]

  • Curse Raises $6 Million As It Looks To Become The Ultimate Gaming Resource

Curse Raises $6 Million As It Looks To Become The Ultimate Gaming Resource

Most people would probably view a hardcore, 16 hour-a-day addiction to World of Warcraft as a bad thing. That was certainly the case for Hubert Thieblot a few years ago, when he dropped out of school and his parents decided to kick him out of the house because he was playing so much. Flash forward five years. Thieblot has managed to turn his addiction into a thriving company called Curse that generated over $3 million in revenue this year. Today, the company is disclosing a $6 million Series B round it closed in early 2009 with participation from Ventech Capital, AGF Private Equity, and SoftTech VC (Jeff Clavier). The round brings Curse's total funding to $11 million, after a $5 million Series A round in 2007 led by AGF Private Equity. In some senses, Curse is akin to a SourceForge for computer games, in that it offers a directory of plugins that players can use to customize and enhance their PC games. Many of the site's users are World of Warcraft fans, who have made Curse.com the definitive site for WoW add-ons. Alongside its directory, Curse also makes a native client players can use to manage their plugins.

  • Why the Droid Eris is not running Android 2.0

Why the Droid Eris is not running Android 2.0

Another day, another Android phone. I believe we will soon come to a day when Android phones will be looked at with the same jaundiced eye as, say, the latest LG Chocolate, but since that day hasn't come, I'll share a few observations with Verizon's new $99 Hero-alike, the Eris. The Eris is basically a mini Hero. It's slightly thinner and clad in all black and but the Sense UI is in place and all of the things that made the Hero great - responsive OS, apps, and social networking connectivity - are here. One thing lacking, however, is the "latest" version of Android with its superior navigation application and multi-touch.

Unboxing (and licking) the Samsung Reclaim

Late last week, Sprint, Samsung, and Captain Planet announced a plan to save the world, very slowly: the Samsung Reclaim. Made primarily of corn and renewable resources, the Reclaim is a green phone - both figuratively and literally. Peter Ha, who is known (outside of his CrunchGear writings) primarily for planting trees and installing solar [...]

  • Review: Curse Client for World of Warcraft

Review: Curse Client for World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft players are a notoriously picky bunch. They know what they like, what they don't like, and have absolutely no issue with telling you exactly how they feel. Loudly, and with many many petitions and forum postings. And that's just the basic game. When you get into modifications, you're into a whole new ballgame. And just making sure you have the most up to date software installed can turn into a major undertaking.
