  • HTC buys Abaxia, gets cozier with carriers in the process

HTC buys Abaxia, gets cozier with carriers in the process

French software firm Abaxia has made a name for itself create white-label modules that help carriers brand phones -- its two flagship products are search and active home screen apps (pictured) -- so the fact that HTC has shelled out €11 million (about $13.1 million) for the company this week should offer you a solid clue where this is all headed. Naturally, HTC isn't talking about exactly how Abaxia will fit into the big picture, but boss Peter Chou says that the acquisition will "deepen and broaden [their] software development capabilities so that [they] can innovate at an even faster pace." Software value-add is becoming even more important for phone manufacturers these days as hardware all converges on a fairly standard full-touch prototype that doesn't offer much opportunity for differentiation -- even as Microsoft is putting the kibosh on serious customization in Windows Phone 7 -- so it'll be interesting to see how this ultimately affects HTC's products, particularly those with carriers' logos silkscreened around back. Follow the break for HTC's full release.

Review: Creative World of Warcraft headset

Short Version: Fresh from the box, Creative’s World of Warcraft, is here! They were designed for WoW players and their performance definitely reflects that. While a tad bulky, they don’t feel heavy. Pros • Very Comfortable • Hard to hear outside the headphones • Wireless Mic works well. Does not get in the way. • Driver allows deep customization of audio to serve your needs. Cons • No way to determine battery power. • Volume buttons feel a little flimsy. • Microphone can adjust but not very well. • In order to download drivers, you must register the product. • Reasonable but not impressive range. • Not compatible with consoles (at least the PS3)

Hackers hack goodies from the HTC Desire over to the Nexus One in no time flat

Back when we first got word that the HTC Desire was essentially a slightly upgraded Nexus One with a bit of customization on HTC's part, we knew there wasn't much to worry about for recent Nexus One purchasers; the very vast majority of the Desire's upperhand was all in the software, which was bound to be hacked over eventually. What we didn't know, however, was just how fast it would happen.

  • Windows Mobile looks to be getting new native keyboard in 6.5.3

Windows Mobile looks to be getting new native keyboard in 6.5.3

It's not exactly a wild accusation to say that the current native on-screen keyboard in Windows 6.5 is, well, bad, and it looks like Microsoft has now picked up on what HTC and others have been not-so-subtly hinting at. While's it's obviously still not official subject to change, that fresh new keyboard you see above has been turned up in Windows Mobile 6.5 build 28002 by the folks at XDA, and is likely similar to what should eventually hit the public in Windows Mobile 6.5.3. They also say that since the source is in a DLL file, the keyboard is prime for some customization -- we'll take ours with the "o" and "p" in their proper place, thanks.

    Print Your Own 3D Styluses

As an on-demand 3D printing service, Shapeways is undoubtedly awesome. But the pitch I got today is about as dull as you can get: personalized styluses for touch-screen devices. Talk about a conflict! All the offered styluses are pretty dorky, with end-decorations ranging from shields to barrels, they’re straight out of a Zelda game. And the [...]

  • Android 2.0 “Donut” features demoed at Google I/O

Android 2.0 “Donut” features demoed at Google I/O

We're still trying to get used to the overwhelming joy of having Cupcake installed on our G1s, but it's full steam ahead over at Google where engineers are already slaving away on the Donut branch that'll eventually come to be known as Android 2.0. Demoed today at the first I/O keynote were Donut's universal search (known simply as "Android Search"), which will let you search both online and locally on the phone through contacts, calendars, music, and any app with the proper code, and a text-to-speech API, which should allow developers to integrate Google Voice Search-style awesomeness into the apps of their choice. We also got a brief glimpse of handwriting gestures used for searching through list -- the live example was drawing the letter 'e' and going to that specific point in a list of songs. Nothing wildly different interface-wise -- yet -- but we know from the initial 1.0 release that the UI's very much subject to change, not to mention the fact that HTC and others look poised to do some serious customization of their own. Check out the gallery for shots live from the I/O keynote!
