  • Apple refreshing the MacBook Air this week?

Apple refreshing the MacBook Air this week?

The Macbook Air needs some help. It's woefully underpowered compared to every other ultraportable and its advertised 5 hour battery life is nothing special these days as the new MacBook Pros can rock-out twice as long. But just maybe Apple has something in store for the razer-thin notebook as soon as this week.

    Review: GelaSkins for iPad

Short Version: GelaSkins for iPad do everything they promise, and they do it well. For 30 bucks a pop, it'll wrap your iPad up in a work of art -- be it one of GelaSkin's roughly 200 pre-designed pieces, or one of your own. It also does a fine job of protecting the back of the iPad from whatever grit and grime might be sitting between it and your desk.

Uh-oh: Looks like the Nexus One kind of sucks at multi-touch (Video)

Uh oh. On at least a few occasions, Android developers have mentioned to me that the multi-touch sensors on certain Android handsets — especially the Nexus One — seemed a bit.. flaky. I’d had nothing but solid experiences while dabbling with multi-touch in all of the apps I could find that support it, so I chalked [...]

Claim: Millimeter wave body scanners wouldn’t have stopped Christmas plot. Why bother with them, then?

Not to alarm y'all, but those millimeter wave body scanners that have been paraded around as the solution to would-be airplane terrorist attacks? Turns out they're sorta useless in that, while they're able to detect dense material (C4, metal, traditional bombs, etc.), they're completely ineffective against less dense material. And wouldn't you know it, the powdered explosive that was to have been used in the Christmas plot would not have been detected by the scanners. As Jay-Z would say, on to the next one.

  • Bell launches visual voicemail on BlackBerry, but it isn’t cheap

Bell launches visual voicemail on BlackBerry, but it isn’t cheap

Just how badly do you want an alternative to pressing and holding the "1" key? With Canada's Bell, you'd better want it pretty badly -- because its new visual voicemail service for BlackBerry devices isn't going to be cheap. The service is available with pretty much every modern BlackBerry, ranging from the older 8830 and Pearl 8130 to the most modern models like the Bold 9700 -- and as you might notice from that model range, it also spans both Bell's CDMA and HSPA networks. Here's where it gets tricky, though: it runs a stout CAD $8 (about $7.65) a month, which is a good deal more than the $2.99 Verizon charges for a similar setup. Obviously it's not much a difference, but it feels like $2.99 is below some magical psychological barrier where no serious mulling occurs; $8, though -- that's a different story.

Modern Warfare 2 for Xbox 360 leaked all over the Internet (a full week before its official release)

As I cleverly remarked in the official CrunchGear chat room, that a video game leaks a few days before its release is par for the course. When the biggest video game of the year leaks a full week before its release date, it's worth noting. So that's what I'm doing right now: Activision's Modern Warfare 2 has leaked. It's available where you usually find such things.

  • Samsung Moment unboxed!

    Samsung Moment unboxed!

It's here, folks. We'll naturally have more impressions in the near future, but for now feast your eyes on the Samsung Moment and one of the least eventful unboxings of all time -- Sprint sure isn't packaging this like a premium handset, but at $179 we suppose it isn't really pricing it like one either. The hardware itself might tell a different story, with a solid, hefty feel to it and great screen. So far our editors are divided on the keyboard, with Chris not being sure it meets up to the CLIQ's standards, while this writer feels it's far superior -- not tiresome to press, but super clicky and very touch type-able. While we sort out this astonishing bit of interoffice drama, check out the unboxing shots in the gallery below. The phone goes on sale November 1st.

Rumors on the Internet: The Prince of Persia movie will be in 3D, but rubbish 3D (Update: Wait, no it won’t.)

Words cannot describe the anticipation all of CrunchGear feels for the upcoming Prince of Persia movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal. You may remember him from... nope, nope, I have no idea who he is, either. But anyway, news! Despite the fact that every two-bit Hollywood movie these days comes in 3D in some capacity, well, Prince of Persia is no different. There's a catch, though.

The Viliv X70 is finally available and shipping from Dynamism

I loved the Viliv X70. It's a great UMPC and it's finally available for public consumption from Dynamism. The pre-orders took a little longer to ship than expected, but now that those are done, the X70 is available for everyone. Better yet, you can expect it to ship out the same day you place your order. Now, the smaller, but still hot, S5 is a different story.

  • Android and iPhone Apps Cost About The Same, Except For Games And Dictionaries

Android and iPhone Apps Cost About The Same, Except For Games And Dictionaries

Do the prices people are willing to pay for a phone app depend on the device or the type of app? A comparison of July prices in the iPhone App Store and the Android Market by app analytics firm Distimo found that across broad categories such as entertainment, navigation, and tools the average price for the Top 100 paid apps was very similar for both mobile computing platforms. There were a few exceptions. The average price for a paid reference app on Android is close to $9, which is more than twice the average price for the same category on the iPhone. This disparity is mostly due to some dictionary apps on Android priced between $15 and $30 (mostly from Paragon Software). I'm not sure those are big sellers, but it bumps up the average. Finance and social networking apps are also slightly more expensive on average. Games are on average about the same as on the iPhone, around $2.50. But if you look at the price distribution, that tells you a different story. While most of the top paid games on the iPhone go for $0.99, on Android many more games are priced between $1.99 and $4.99.

MacBook Slow? SATA interface in MacBook Pro drops from 3.0Gbit to 1.5Gbit

Bad news, sports fans. It looks like Apple has downgraded the speed of the SATA interface in the newest revision of the MacBook Pro. While the previous MacBook Pros had a 3.0 Gbit SATA interface, benchmarks show that the current MacBook Pro only clocks in at 1.5 Gbit.
