The BigTrak poised to turn left-right-forward-left-back into your heart

Posted on December 9, 2009 | No Comments
USB 3.0 is slowly advancing, and Japan-based computer accessory maker Buffalo emerges as the leading company in its space. After having announced the world's first USB 3.0-powered Blu-ray burner just last month, they today unveiled the first ExpressCard adapter [JP] that's based on USB 3.0. The IFC-EC2U3/UC works with Windows 7 and Vista (32bit and 34 bit). It's also compatible to XP machines.
Buffalo explains that if your PC or digital camera has a USB 3.0 port, you'll get 5Gbps as the top data transfer speed. If not, the ExpressCard/34 offers just 480Mbps. It features two USB 3.0 ports and is based off NEC's USB 3.0 host controller.

Toyota’s anti-drunk driving gadget elicits comparison to, yes, Nazi Germany
Posted on August 31, 2009 | No CommentsHelp me understand this. Toyota today announced some sort of anti-drunk driving “gadget” (more like a complete system, including a digital camera and a breathalyzer) that prevents a car from being turned on if it detects a certain amount of alcohol in your system. You know, to help reduce the number of drunk driving-related accidents, which in the U.S. caused nearly 12,000 deaths last year. That's one death every 45 minutes.

CerevoCam: New camera automatically uploads pictures to social media sites
Posted on August 29, 2009 | No Comments
I just came back from the CNET Japan Innovation Conference 2009 [JP] in Tokyo, where Cerevo, currently one of the most ambitious tech start-ups in Japan, showed its self-developed digital camera aimed at heavy social media users for the first time.
The company has just seven employees (two of them are part-timers) but big plans: Cerevo intends to dramatically simplify the process of uploading and sharing pictures online by providing both an extra-easy to use camera (the "CerevoCam") and a photo sharing site ("CerevoLife") specifically geared towards owners of that camera. And the company wants to bring its idea in front of a global audience.

Sony’s EXMOR low-light shots truly stunning
Posted on August 7, 2009 | No CommentsNeed more light? EXMOR goes out and gets it for you! By selectively “culling” ambient photons the Sony WX1 and TX1 CyberShots will make pictures more light-ful. Just look at this simulated shot: by taking only the photons coming off of that well-lit building, thereby redirecting the photons away from a far inferior digital camera, [...]
Interesting. This little doodad is called FOTOBOX Plus. It’s an $80 USB apparatus that reads SD cards from your digital camera.
The idea is that you take a bunch of photos on your digital camera and then pop the SD card into the FOTOBOX Plus, which goes into your computer’s USB port. At that point, built-in slideshow software builds an automatic slideshow from your photos.
There's a certain enthusiastic group of photographers out there that love to use really cheap and unpredictable cameras to create amazing pictures. The problem is, most of them use film, which is becoming harder and harder to find these days.
