First 3D baseball game ever will air on DirecTV in July

Listen, it's all well and good that DirecTV gets to make these grandiloquent announcements that it's going to offer this or that sport in 3D—today's news is that DirecTV will be the first TV provider to show a Major League Baseball game in 3D with this July 10 and July 11's Yankees-Mariners clash on the YES Network—but I have one question: why in God's name is Fox Soccer Channel still shown in standard definition? That's right, four years after I purchased my first HDTV specifically so I could watch ESPN-HD and ESPN2-HD coverage of the World Cup, I'm still staring at SD coverage on FSC with DirecTV. It's all a little bit stupid.

  • Sony turning to Intel chips and Android to revitalize TV sales

Sony turning to Intel chips and Android to revitalize TV sales

Look out, Sony is actually trying something new and might announce Intel Atom-powered TVs next month at Google I/O 2010. A new Android released dubbed Dragonpoint is said to run on these TVs and will be just the beginning of Sony's venture into the so-called Smart TV market. The report comes from Bloomberg who sources two people familiar with the matter. The timing is certainly right. Sony hasn't been in the top TV spot for years, constantly losing marketshare to others like Samsung, LG, and even Vizio. Something needs to be done and so Sony is said to be testing a whole line of home entertainment devices that will bring the wonders of the Internet to TVs and Blu-ray players through Android. Logitech is even said to be in on the venture and will contribute a wireless keyboard that will work as a remote. But as sweet as an Android TV sounds, it might not be the right solution -- at least not for the North American market. This could either be a huge win or a fail whale.

DirecTV would like to remind you that they will have Avatar on time, unlike Netflix

We're starting to see the results of Netflix's deal with the devil. DirecTV really wants to make sure you know that while Netflix won't have Fox and Time Warner's movies at release day, they will be on PPV. Is that the sound of someone rubbing their hands together in a greedy way?

Sold out! Panasonic’s 3D TVs simply cannot be found in stores!

Well, well! Every single Panasonic 3D TV has been sold, meaning, I guess, that 3D TV is a hit, despite what some people think. They're on back order now, so if you weren't among the first to plop down nearly $3,000 for a 50-inch set you get a late slip. You're late to the party. Last week called, and it wants to know why you didn't buy a TV?

Wi-Fi school bus keeps kids quiet

A school district in Arizona has outfitted one of its school buses with a $200 mobile 3G Wi-Fi router and $60-per-month access. And guess what? Instead of punching each other and yelling all the way to school, the kids quietly tap, tap, tap away on their laptops.

How to use RSS to automatically download anything from Usenet

It’s the tree of life, and for no particular reason, either. As a corollary to Biggs’ “cable companies are doomed” article from earlier today, I thought I’d demonstrate how easy it is to accomplish what he was threatening. That is, live a happy and successful life without having to pay $100+ a month to Comcast, Time [...]

Video: DirecTV’s App Store leaves a lot to be desired

I know the DirectTV app store has been out for a bit, but I watched this video and was shocked. It seems that DirecTV added these apps or widgets just to be cool and hip like everyone else. They seem like an afterthought and not a well-developed platform. Now, like Dave Zatz points out, it could be that the system has so much lag because of the crappy DirecTV house brand DVR, but don't you think the developers would code for their hardware? Any DirecTV users care to chime in about the TV Apps? Are they really this bad?

Macrovision just changed its name to Rovi to go with its fancy Liquid on-screen Guide

I've never used a Tivo, but I hear good things, especially with respect to its on-screen guide. I have subscribed to Time Warner Cable and DirecTV, and I can tell you that their on-screen guides are basic at best, junk at worst. There's more than 1,000 channels, and the best you can do is break that into “Sports” and “Entertainment and Music”? Gee, thanks. I bring all of this up because Macrovision (of all people) has said, “You know what, yeah, those on-screen guides could use a new coat of paint, and then some. There has to be more you can do than merely diving those 1,000 channels into “News and Information” and “Movies.” So let's make a new, better guide, tap into the Internet, and call it a day. Oh, and let's also change our name to Rovi.” And it did.
