Posted on May 17, 2010 | No Comments
This morning when I woke up, I thought to myself: "Man -- I sure hope there isn't anything sitting in my tips inbox that is so simple and yet so clever that it makes me feel completely inadequate."
Apparently I didn't hope hard enough.

DIY: a knob for your iPhone
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No Comments
So you don't like a stylus, but you don't want to get your iPhone screen all dirty either. Easy solution, build a knob that will simulate the act of touching your iPhone screen. This is an easy build, but it'll take some tweaking to get the fabric in the right places to work properly. Seems like there's been quite a few iPhone related knobs lately.

SketchNation: DIY iPad gaming plus a giveaway
Posted on April 13, 2010 | No Comments
If you've dreamt all your life of blowing up your third-grade teacher with spitball guns, your prayers have been answered. SketchNation is a surprisingly odd game that allows you to select all of the sprites in gameplay. You can set your own character sprite (a spitball gun, for example), the sprites for the bullets or spitballs, and even set up a boss image (your third-grade teacher). You then fly through a hail of bullets until you beat the game.
Apparently you can also blow up Walt Mossberg and David Pogue, for whatever reason. Those men are saints. Anyway, if you'd like to try it out, comment below. I'll send codes to five lucky, random readers. Viel Glück!

DIY: Convert a disposable camera into a slave flash
Posted on March 29, 2010 | No Comments
Buying a flash unit can be expensive, but here's a cheapskate alternative that will do the job, at least for a while. Plus, you're recycling a disposable camera into something reusable, and saving all those bits from the landfill. Besides, once you use all of the flash out of one disposable camera, you can always build another one to replace it, and recycle the first one.

DIY: Get medieval with the Mini-Trebuchet

Make magazine has a special place in my heart, partly because I love the crazy stuff they come up with, and partly because they want to help you build the crazy stuff they come up with. When I was a youngster, we made a rudimentary version of a catapult in scouts. Sure, it didn't work very well, and it was powered by a rubber band made from an inner tube, but you could sure launch a walnut with it. That's why when I see a kit like this, I'm filled with an overwhelming urge to buy one.

DIY Segway skateboard. Yeah, you read that right: DIY

I know of only one person who would be able to build this thing - my buddy Paul - but I would totally grab a beer and watch him solder everything together and then ride around on this thing like a little freak. Heck, if you try to build this, tell me and we'll come by and film you riding it. Seriously.
The instructions are pretty complex and you need quite a few parts, including a powerful motor and a go kart wheel.
Most shoulder mounts for DSLR video are strange metal and carbon fiber contraptions, which work I guess. But what if you want something a bit more organic, something that you can make yourself. Here's a shoulder mount that was constructed from a single piece of wood.
