Posted on November 30, 2009 | No CommentsI'm pretty sure I wrote the complete opposite story several days ago, but who cares, right? It's cold and rainy and there's not much else to talk about. So! As you're probably well aware, Jay Leno's new show isn't doing too well. Why is that? Well, you can try to sit down and analyze if the show is any good or not (note: I haven't seen the show), or if the show's earlier time slot isn't conducive to that type of show. You know, just try to examine what's going on. That, or you can blame those damn DVRs for ruining everything. Let's go with that one.

TiVo drops the prices of the HD and HD XL DVRs in the spirit of giving

TiVo has finally dropped the price on the HD and HD XL DVRs. These models have been rocking their initial MSRP for years now, but now they can be had for a little bit less. The 160GB HD model is now $249 and the 1TB model, $499 down from $599. Of course you still have to pay a monthly fee to use these DVRs, but I'm not one to snub a modest price drop.

Posted on November 12, 2009 | No CommentsIt's no secret that I'm a big fan of mixed martial arts, also “known” as UFC. It's less well-known that, back in my youth, I was a very big pro wrestling fan. (Pro wrestling today is largely unwatchable.) When I was 15 I subscribed to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, written by the hardest-working journalist in America, Dave Meltzer (the man doesn't sleep), a weekly news and analysis publication that detailed, to an incredible degree, the goings-on of the two businesses, pro wrestling and MMA. A little more than a year ago the newsletter entered the online age (while merging with another, similar publication in Figure 4 Weekly, written by Bryan Alvarez), with newsletters being made available online (in addition to the dead trees version). Today the publication enters the next exciting age, the iPhone age. That's right: there's now a Wrestling Observer Newsletter/Figure 4 Weekly iPhone App~!

Public Radio App lets you resume ‘This American Life’ whenever you please

Now that you've got an NPR-lovin' stereo in your bedroom, the only thing missing in your otherwise completely fulfilled life is an NPR application that enables you to listen to your favorite programs whenever, wherever. If we just rung your bell, you can now drift away and die happy. Available this very moment in the 100,000-strong App Store is the Public Radio App, which essentially acts as a DVR for the iconic station. Once fired up, the app can "pause and rewind public radio streams from NPR, PRI, APM and local public radio stations," and there's even an alarm clock setting that wakes you up with your favorite public radio stream. Unfortunately, on-demand streaming is still a pipe dream, but there's nothing to stop these guys from adding that very feature in the next iteration. Go on -- try and lay off the trigger. Video: DirecTV’s App Store leaves a lot to be desired

I know the DirectTV app store has been out for a bit, but I watched this video and was shocked. It seems that DirecTV added these apps or widgets just to be cool and hip like everyone else. They seem like an afterthought and not a well-developed platform. Now, like Dave Zatz points out, it could be that the system has so much lag because of the crappy DirecTV house brand DVR, but don't you think the developers would code for their hardware? Any DirecTV users care to chime in about the TV Apps? Are they really this bad?

Best Buy and TiVo get in bed, HDTVs with built-in TiVos are conceived

Best Buy and TiVo have worked out a nice deal. Best Buy is going to heavily push the DVR in all its stores nationwide and TiVo will produce a special Best Buy DVR and embed its DVR platform in a few HDTVs. This isn't official just yet, but it seems like the agreement should help both companies.
