The Kindle won
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsI’ve been thinking this for a long while: Amazon won the ereader war. They were first to market – not officially, but in terms of mindshare, they offer a software package that is compelling on almost every mobile and desktop platform, and they have an entrenched user base already invested in their product. Nothing else [...] -
Skyfire For Android Beta Leaked! Have some screenshots.
Posted on April 21, 2010 | No Comments
By the time I got wind that Skyfire was looking for Alpha testers, the sign-up sheet had already been filled to the brim. Bummer, right?
Fear not! As luck may have (the "luck" here being for early adopters, if not necessarily Skyfire), a Beta copy just leaked out for all to enjoy.

Nostalgia week continues with Apple ][, Pascal, and old-fashioned newsletters!
Posted on February 19, 2010 | No Comments
Hot on the heels of our celebration of the BBS, here's a pair of retro stories to ease your transition into the weekend. First up is "Pascal Spoken Here", by Ian Bogost about the subtle shift over the years in how we view computers. Back in 1977 the advertising clearly identified the connection between using, exploring, and learning a computer in ways that you simply don't see any more. Next up is a blast from the past on Slashdot with a wonderful scan of a computing newsletter from the 1980s.

Analyst: Expect Xbox 360, PS3 price cuts this year
Posted on January 12, 2010 | No CommentsYeah, you probably could have guessed that one already, but now someone from Wedbush Morgan has said it, validating your opinion in the process. So the deal is that both Microsoft and Sony are likely to cut the price of their respective consoles this year, probably around summertime. The thing is, because Microsoft’s manufacturing costs are lower, it has the ability to lower the cost more than Sony does

TeliaSonera prices LTE service, offers free modem upgrade next year
Posted on December 15, 2009 | No Comments
It's pretty easy to fall far enough into the 4G mania trap that you lose sight of the important stuff -- like, say, how much cash you're going to be shedding every month for the delightful privilege of delivering 10Mbps-plus speeds straight to your lappie. Sweden's TeliaSonera -- which just launched service in Oslo and its home turf in Stockholm -- has revealed that users will be paying ridiculously low fees to get 'em to sign up before bumping rates mid-contract, a tactic stolen right out of Comcast's playbook. To start, Stockholm residents will be paying SEK4 a month until July 2010, which works out to just 56 cents, while Oslo folks pay a NOK1 (17 cent) pittance until April 2010. After those rates expire, though, watch out: Stockholm goes up to SEK599 ($83) for 30GB of usage and Oslo bumps to NOK699 ($120). That's a hell of an increase -- but then again, 30GB of service at torrent-friendly speeds is a tempting proposition. Anyhow, the other interesting tidbit of this story is the fact that early adopters (read: anyone lining up at the store to sign up today) will get a free upgrade to Samsung's HSPA / LTE dual-mode modem next year once it's available; the current model is LTE-only, which makes roaming a bit tricky. Kind of them, no?TeliaSonera prices LTE service, offers free modem upgrade next year originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 12:24:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

The island of misfit phones
Posted on November 9, 2009 | No CommentsSo AT&T has a problem: even after early and vociferous defections by bloggers, they’ve been getting creamed for sub-par service everywhere, especially left and right coast cities that rhyme with Blue Pork and Fan Fanfisco. Verizon is stepping into that breech by releasing these clever commercials touting its network over AT&Ts. But, as Mr. Fireball [...] -
Some HTC Hero units shipping sans EV-DO Rev. A on Sprint? (update: nope!)
Posted on October 12, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA, Android
Ruh roh. Without claiming that there's some sort of high-speed conspiracy going on at Sprint (read: there's not), we'd like to point out that quite a few early adopters are claiming that their Hero refuses to hop on the carrier's EV-DO Rev. A network. We took a peek back at the company's press release for this very phone, and sure enough, the Rev. A experience is promised. We're guessing that a simple firmware update will be all it takes to remedy the issue (if there's truly an issue at all), but 'til then, there's always WiFi! Right, guys?
[Via Examiner, thanks Tracknod]
Update: We just heard directly from HTC about this snafu, and as it turns out, the message that Sprint Hero users are seeing is merely a mislabeling. If you're within an EV-DO Rev. A area, you'll get Rev. A speeds -- despite that fact that your phone says it's only on Rev. 0. We're also told that a future maintenance release will address the message. Check the full quote after the break.Continue reading Some HTC Hero units shipping sans EV-DO Rev. A on Sprint? (update: nope!)

Pre faltering, Palm laying off employees?
Posted on September 30, 2009 | No CommentsWhen your smartphone drops from $249 to $79 over a summer, you have to wonder what's going on. Two rumors are circulating this AM, one that Palm is laying off folks, perhaps in the Windows Mobile team. The estimated sales for the Pre topped out at 375,000 at the end of August and they went from $299 ($199 after rebate) to about $79 in about eleven weeks. While this might be normal for a feature phone - the subsidy kicks in once they're sure that the early adopters who simply must have the LG Chocolate have had their fix - this isn't good for a smartphone that was supposed to be the lead invasion force for a new WebOS smartphone renaissance.

Japanese cell phones for the world: NEC and Panasonic plot new overseas sales plans
Posted on July 6, 2009 | No Comments
Japan, the world's second largest economy with the third biggest Internet population, and the many, many early adopters of technology inhabiting this nation could be heaven for the domestic cell phone industry. And it was for years, until sales started slowing dangerously (minus 30% last fiscal year), and the overall population is poised to shrink and age dramatically in the future.
These two developments made a handful of Japanese cell phone makers think about moving away from creating all those fancy Nippon-only phones they've been producing for years. Now NEC and Panasonic seem to be finally ready to export some models - as early as next fiscal year, according to Japan's biggest business newspaper Nikkei.
