NVIDIA puts its Tegra 2 eggs in Android’s basket, aims to topple Apple’s A4

Microsoft's Kin One and Kin Two might not turn out to be the most auspicious devices for Tegra's debut in the smartphone arena, but NVIDIA seems to be learning from its mistakes. Admitting that the company committed too strongly to Microsoft with the first-gen iteration, Jen-Hsun Huang has now said that the second generation of Tegra will look to Android devices first and foremost. This newfound focus will materialize with both smartphones and tablets in the third and fourth quarter of this year, and will, according to Jen-Hsun, offer device makers a viable competitor to Apple's A4 SOC. In other news, NVIDIA has now shipped "a few hundred thousand" Fermi cards, and has also achieved 70 design wins with its Optimus graphics switching technology. Eleven of those are now out in the wild, but the vast majority are still to come, mostly as part of the seasonal "back to school" refresh at the end of the summer. These revelations came during the company's earnings call for the first quarter of its 2011 fiscal year, and you can find the full transcript at the source below.

Clearwire to offer WiMax phones from HTC and Samsung this year

Whenever we talk about WiMax phones (like the oh-so-drool-worthy EVO 4G), we're usually talking about Sprint. Well, Sprint's WiMax is powered by a (not so) little company called Clearwire (which, in turn, is 51% owned by Sprint) -- and they want some WiMax phones of their own. During an earnings call yesterday, the company disclosed that they're planning on launching at least two WiMax handsets this year -- one from Samsung, and one from HTC. One will be powered by Android.. and the other? Its a mystery!

    PC sales are finally recovering

Someone is buying computers. Connecticut-based research firm Gartner said PC shipments are up 27% to 84.3 million units in the first quarter, surpassing most analysts' estimates. Helped by sales of all-in-one designs and touch screen displays, it seems the PC market has bounced back from the year-earlier period when sales dropped almost 7 percent to the lowest levels since 2001. Intel, which recently reported strong earnings for the quarter, forecasted a rise in sales and a rebound in technology spending. Sales in emerging markets played a key role in this recovery.

Yeah, Cataclysm will come out this year

It's earnings call season, and while no news is more shocking than the fact that WWE will drop the Survivor Series, there's something for World of Warcraft fans. And, really, who isn't a fan of World of Warcraft. Anyhow, yeah, Cataclysm will come out this year. We've (and by "we" I mean the WoW community) pretty much assumed as much since the expansion was first announced, but now the money men have made it official.

Apple Execs Downright Giddy About The Tablet (For Them Anyway)

Yesterday, we noted that multiple sources have heard Steve Jobs refer to the soon-to-be-unveiled Apple Tablet as the "most important thing I've ever done." Today brought two statements out of Apple that are just about as close as you're ever going to get to a confirmation of that. In Apple's press release for its strong Q1 2010 earnings, Jobs said the following: "The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about." What's odd is that not only does Jobs (or anyone at Apple, for that matter) usually make no comments about as-yet unannounced products, but why would he do so in a release about the previous quarter's earnings — which have absolutely nothing to do with the tablet? He simply had no reason that he had to make that statement. I can only interpret that as he's just that excited about what he's going to unveil on Wednesday.

Jobs On Q1 2010 Results: Apple Now A $50+ Billion Company — Major New Product This Week

Apple has just announced its Q1 2010 earnings, and as expected, they're very good. I'll get to the numbers in a second, but perhaps more notable are two Steve Jobs quotes in the release:
If you annualize our quarterly revenue, it’s surprising that Apple is now a $50+ billion company. The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about.”
I think we all know what that means.

Sprint says webOS 1.3.5 is hitting the Pre today

Well, lookie here: it's not up on Palm's support site yet, but Sprint is showing a release date of December 28 -- that's today, by the way -- for webOS 1.3.5 on the Pre. This is a pretty nifty little upgrade, you might recall -- nifty enough to get none other than CEO Jon Rubinstein to name-drop it during the company's most recent earnings call -- thanks to the removal of the platform's troublesome app storage limit, better performance, better battery life (particularly in weak cell coverage), and a host of bugfixes sure to put a smile on your pretty face. Let us know how those updates go, alright?

    [Thanks, Gon Kim]

  • Palm loses $85.4 million in latest reported quarter — hey, it’s an improvement

Palm loses $85.4 million in latest reported quarter — hey, it’s an improvement

We don't know just how quickly Palm (or Elevation Partners, for that matter) thought it'd become profitable following the release of webOS, but it's not there quite yet -- the company is in the process of outing its earnings for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 right now, and in a word, they're still in the red. The good news is that it's a marked improvement from last quarter -- they've gone from a $164.5M GAAP net loss to an $85.4M one this time around. On a non-GAAP gross basis, they actually made $5.5M, which is up from $2.8M a quarter earlier. They've got $590 million in cash and other "short-term investments" on the book right now, which seems like it should be enough to keep the company going without a profit or additional cash infusion for at least a few additional quarters, but then again, burn rate is going to vary with just how much hardware and software R&D they're doing and the kinds of carrier deals they're scoring. We bet they're looking forward to this Verizon business going down, eh?

Update: Palm's specifically saying that they're looking to grow carrier and geographic coverage right now -- a good plan, if we say so ourselves.

Update 2: They've sold 784,000 phones in the quarter, which compares to 823,000 in the last -- a 5 percent drop. That's up 41 percent from the same quarter a year ago... but yeah, of course it's going to be way up from the pre-webOS days.

Update 3: Over 800 apps in the catalog so far, once they graduate from the Early Access Program exclusivity, Palm foresees a "flood" of apps. No plans right now to change SDK strategy to a more native development environment.

Verizon chief says offering the iPhone is Apple’s call

Remember how in grade school, you usually made fun of the people you had crushes on? Verizon -- hot on the heels of some surgically strategic anti-iPhone marketing to promote its upcoming Android line -- is singing a very different tune in the corporate boardroom, with CEO Ivan Seidenberg (who has a storied reputation for running his mouth) saying during the company's earnings call today that the company "obviously would be interested at any point in the future that they would be interested in having us as a partner." He went on to say that the decision to bring the iPhone to Verizon is "exclusively in Apple's court," though we doubt that's entirely true -- Verizon has a reputation for putting manufacturers and devices through the wringer, and if any carrier in the world were to spike the iPhone for failing acceptance testing or throw its gargantuan weight and reputation around to put pressure on the contract, it'd be Big Red. Either way, though, it's an olive branch and a potential start to the near-constant cries of "if only the iPhone were on Verizon" that we've been hearing for the past two years; we're still having an awful hard time picturing a CDMA-equipped version ever happening, but with Verizon's LTE network progressively lighting up over the next few years, it might just be the perfect opportunity for these wayward souls to finally find common ground, especially with the tune AT&T's singing these days.

Apple Q4 Results: Another Big Quarter, More Macs And iPhones Sold Than Ever Before

The Q4 numbers are in for Apple and they’re good. Quite good. Really good. The company posted revenue of $9.87 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, or $1.82 per diluted share. Apple’s own earnings projections for Q4 were $1.23 a share, but they always put them laughably low. Analysts’ projections expected them to be around $1.42 a share, but some were looking for numbers as high as $1.60 a share. Apple beat all of those, easily. Apple sold 3.05 million Macs in the quarter, up 17 percent from a year ago. They also sold 7.4 million iPhones in the quarter, a 7 percent growth from a year ago. Both of those are record sales numbers, CEO Steve Jobs notes.

  • Apple Sold Twice As Many iPhones As Macs Last Quarter. And It’s Closing The Gap On iPod Sales Too

Apple Sold Twice As Many iPhones As Macs Last Quarter. And It’s Closing The Gap On iPod Sales Too

The quarterly numbers are in for Apple. And once again they're very good. It was another non-holiday record quarter in terms of revenues and earnings. But the real number that jumps off the page is the iPhone sales. Let's just say it: The iPhone looks well on its way to being Apple's primary business. Last quarter, Apple sold 5.2 million iPhones. That's a colossal 626 percent growth over the year ago period, when Apple sold 717,000 iPhones. Now, it's important to note that the iPhone 3G wasn't released last year until July, while the new iPhone 3GS dropped in June this year. But still, the difference is huge. And it nearly was the record for iPhones sold in a quarter, which happened in Q4 last year, with almost 6.9 million iPhones sold thanks to the full brunt of the iPhone 3G sales. Again, these new Q3 2009 numbers only include a few weeks of iPhone 3GS sales.
