Why carriers didn’t want to allow 3G VoIP before. And why they’re now setting it free
Posted on January 28, 2010 | No Comments
I've used VoIP apps on the past few iterations of of the iPhone as well as a number of other devices including some from Nokia, HTC, and Samsung. Those apps always only worked over WiFi and have mostly worked as advertised. Experience shows that if there's one thing cellular companies are good at it's ensuring a call can get from point A to point B (although AT&T has been sucking wind lately). It's what they've been doing for almost two decades.
Now that Apple has lifted the ban VoIP over 3G - note it is Apple lifting these restrictions, not AT&T - you have to wonder what's going on. Won't 3G tear down the network around our ears? Won't dogs and cats start living together?

Quick Look: ASUS NX90
Posted on January 5, 2010 | No CommentsThe ASUS NX90 looks like a monster. It has a full sized keyboard surrounded by a field of polished aluminum. Japan gets another set of those “Crazy Earphones”
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No Comments
Do you remember the so-called Crazy Earphones Tokyo-based gadget maker Solid Alliance released back in October? Apparently the silly things sold well, otherwise the company probably wouldn't have updated [JP] the series, which consisted of sushi, bananas, cat paws and bolts.

Robocops to roam the streets of San Jose
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No CommentsAccording to the Mercury News, cops in San Jose will soon be wearing head-mounted video cameras to record their interaction with civilians. The devices will sit above their ears and they will be activated whenever they speak with a citizen or suspect. The videos will then be uploaded to a central server. Presumably these things turn off when the officers are in the toilet. Why is this happening? Because people don't trust cops right now. The system, called AXON, can also attach to other parts of the body.

Dell Mini 3i unboxed in China, capacitive stylus included
Posted on November 13, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Others, China Mobile, Android
One lucky Chinese blogger was kind enough to share his Dell Mini 3i unboxing experience beyond the Great Firewall, just a tad before Dell officially announced their first-ever smartphone. What's interesting is that the China Mobile version comes with a special stylus for the capacitive touchscreen -- a very handy tool for writing Chinese -- but there's been no mention of this accessory for the Brazilian 3iX. Dell's also bundled a 3.5mm adapter for the mini-USB port in case their handsfree isn't good enough for your audiophilic ears. Yeah, too bad about the missing headphone jack, but don't let this deter you from checking out the Mini 3i's full glory after the break.Continue reading Dell Mini 3i unboxed in China, capacitive stylus included

Deaf people may not be able to hear music, but soon they might be able to feel it, even on the go. A concept device from German designer Frederik Podzuweit promises to make hearing music a reality for the deaf community based on synesthesia -- a type of sensory stimulus evokes the perception of an entirely different sense.
You know what you need to clean out your ears? Tools. And not tools like Q-tips.
Real tools. Motorized, mechanized, battery-using tools. Take this Cordless ear wax cleaner, for instance. It’s only ten bucks and it runs on AA batteries.
