Spotted on eBay: Nintendo 64DD and all the games starting at $500

Many of the eBay auctions we write about are sorta “meh,” but this one gets the incredibly valuable Nicholas Deleon award of “hey, this is pretty neat.” It’s a Nintendo 64DD and every single game released for it. The bidding is currently at $500, or you can Buy It Now™ for $1,300. Come on, Mega [...]

  • Still Really Want An iPhone 4? Find $5,000, Head To eBay

Still Really Want An iPhone 4? Find $5,000, Head To eBay

As you may have heard, Apple completely blew through its pre-order launch day iPhone 4s in less than a day (and that was despite major technical issues with the ordering process). It has now blown through the second wave (due in early July) as well. The current shipping estimate if you order right now is July 14. Ugh. But if you absolutely want one at or around launch day, the Internet, as always, provides an option. Scanning eBay right now, there are roughly 400 iPhone 4s for sale (between the 16 GB and 32 GB models). Sure, the device isn't out yet, but people are willing to part with the device as soon as they get it on June 24. The question is: how much do you have to pay to get them to part with it? Currently, the cheapest ones are going for $550 -- and that's the $199 16 GB model. The cheapest 32 GB model? $799 -- a full $500 over the $299 retail price.

  • iPhone 4 pre-order shipping estimates bumped back yet again

iPhone 4 pre-order shipping estimates bumped back yet again

I’ll go ahead and say it: if you want an iPhone 4 and didn’t pre-order yesterday, you’re going to have a hell of a time getting one on launch day. In fact, you might have a tough time getting one any time near launch day. As the pre-orders piled up last night and the first batch [...]

  • Microsoft’s Oprah moment: You’re all getting Xboxes

Microsoft’s Oprah moment: You’re all getting Xboxes

Although there was plenty of news coming out of Microsoft today, the most interesting move is their decision to begin shipping the brand new XBox - it's basically the old XBox with 802.11n Wi-Fi, a 250GB hard drive, and Kinect support - the same week they announced it. It's not quite same day, but it's close. However, another treat came when they announced all the media at their press event will be getting XBox 360s immediately and that they would be showing up at their domiciles and places of business posthaste. These sort of giveaways are common at developer events (well, actually just Google IO) and I suspect they'll become more popular in the coming months. Gear is so cheap to build and ship that it almost makes sense to blanket the evangelists with it. Whereas the old model of "selective releases" works for some products - Apple, in particular excels at this - the XBox team is dealing with an entrenched base of hardware users who will be loathe to swap out their old XBox, provided they're not RRODed. Update: Now with video!

AT&T to provide free unlock codes for everyone! …except iPhone users

It seems that all it takes is a class-action lawsuit to get some companies to start treating their customers right. As a settlement of said lawsuit, today it was announced that AT&T will provide customers with a free unlock code for their device after only 90 days of service. Now, now, don't get too excited yet: it's not quite as clear-cut as it may seem.

AT&T to nearly double early termination fees on smart phones

Thinking about snatching up an AT&T iPhone, unlocking it, breaking contract, and selling it on eBay for a small profit? Yeah, that’s not gonna work anymore. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that AT&T’s planning on doubling the early termination fees for smartphone contracts from $175 up to an oh-so-painful $325, with the fee dropping by $10 [...]

CSIRO’s patent fight targets more victims: AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile

CSIRO's patent fight targets more victims: AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile
Is anyone safe from the wrath of Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization? It's looking unlikely, with the company expanding its patent lawsuit furor to cover three more major players: AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile. These three are the latest cherry-picked to be on the receiving end of CSIRO's mighty 802.11a/g patent hammer. Companies like Dell, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony all chose to settle rather than challenge this patent bully, giving it the encouragement (and cash) to bring the fight to these three new players, apparently named simply because they sold WiFi devices. Sadly, there are more to come according to Executive Director Niger Poole:
I'm not going to be exposing what the legal strategy is to a journalist. There's a legal strategy here that has been thought through very carefully and to a lay person it looks like a pincer movement. You've got court action against upstream chip makers and you've got court action against downstream carriers.
Ever pass on an old WiFi-equipped gadget on eBay or gave it to a friend in exchange for a case of beer? Lord Humongous is coming for you next.

    [Thanks, Chris]
