Apple responds to iPhone 4 reception issues: you’re holding the phone the wrong way
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsSo, we just spoke with Apple and got the straight dirt on the reception issues that have been plaguing users today... and it's a little surprising. In essence, Apple cops to the fact there are reception issues with the new iPhone -- namely, that if you cover the bottom-left corner of the phone and bridge the gap between the notch there with your naked flesh, you could see some signal degradation. Yes, you read that right: it's not a software or production issue, simply a matter of the physical location of your hand in regards to the phone's antenna. The company's suggested fix? Move your hand position, or get a case which covers that part of the phone, thus breaking contact. As you can see in the email above which just arrived in our tip box, this is a sentiment which runs pretty high at the company. Here's the official statement:
We know what you're thinking, and we're thinking it too: this sounds crazy. Essentially, Apple is saying that the problem is how you hold your phone, and that the solution is to change that habit, or buy one of their cases. Admittedly, this isn't a problem that exists only for the iPhone 4 -- we've seen reports of the same behavior on previous generations (the 3G and 3GS), and there is a running thread about this problem with the Nexus One. While it is definitely true that interference is an unavoidable problem, we can't help feeling like this is really a bit of bad design. If the only answer is to move your hand, why didn't Apple just move the antenna position? What we can say without question is that in our testing of the phone, we had improved reception and fewer dropped calls than we experienced with the last generation, and we never noticed this issue. Additionally, when using a bumper we can't recreate the signal loss. So, now we have an answer... all we're wondering is whether or not the company will start handing out bumpers pro-bono to those who are experiencing problems. It certainly seems like the right thing to do.Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.
Update: To add a little perspective, check out a video from 2008 after the break showing the same issue with the now-ancient iPhone 3G (thanks Inge).Continue reading Apple responds to iPhone 4 reception issues: you're holding the phone the wrong way

Some iPhone 4s Begin Arriving A Full 2 Days Early
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No Comments
As you may have read last night, Apple started emailing people who pre-ordered the iPhone 4 to let them know that it may arrive a day early. While the rest of us have to wait for June 24, those who opted to get the device delivered, should get it as soon as tomorrow, the email says. But actually, if FedEx's tracking system is correct (and that may be a big "if"), some people may actually get the iPhone 4 today.
As you can see in the screenshot, FedEx is alerting some customers that the iPhone 4 is "On FedEx vehicle for delivery." In this particular instance, this is an iPhone that has been sitting in Oakland for a day, so it's not clear why it would be on a FedEx truck unless they were actually delivering it. Others on Twitter are seeing the same thing.

Google setting up music store later this year, looking for search and Android synergy
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsRemember that chart that pointed out the differences between Google, Apple and Microsoft? Well, it's looking increasingly like Google is intent on filling any and all gaps in its portfolio. Those good old unnamed sources have been talking, originally to CNET last week and to the Wall Street Journal today, and disclosing Google's supposed intent to introduce its very own music store. This would initially encompass a web store where you can stream or download tracks, with a search tie-in that'll get your money into Google's pocket in the fastest possible way. Subsequent plans are said to include Android integration in 2011 -- something that Google rather nonchalantly demoed at its I/O conference last month. Of course, none of this is as yet confirmed, but it looks like Apple and Google will be competing across yet another front -- hold on tight.Google setting up music store later this year, looking for search and Android synergy originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 08:54:00 EST. Apple randomly canceling some iPhone pre-orders? Update: AT&T pre-orders too?
Posted on June 19, 2010 | No CommentsWe haven't verified exactly what's going on here, but we've gotten several tips tonight from people who've received an iPhone 4 pre-order cancellation email from Apple saying that their order couldn't be authorized. That sounds like an AT&T authorization problem to us, and given the the litany of problems that Apple and AT&T had all week dealing with the huge number of pre-orders, we can't say we're too surprised to hear that the chaos continues. Here's the email:
Uh, yeah. We're obviously looking into the situation, and we'll let you know what we find out.Dear Customer,
We were unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone order. As a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order. To complete the purchase of your iPhone, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T company-owned retail store.
We apologize for this inconvenience.
Sincerely,
Apple Online Store Team
Update: We're hearing that some people are getting cancellations from AT&T, as well -- curiouser and curiouser.

Like this wouldn’t happen: AT&T canceling orders made “in error”
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No CommentsReader Matthew just confirmed our worst fears: not only was the pre-order experience at Apple and AT&T a big pile of poopfail, they've started cancelling "orders made in error." Why in error? Well, presumably because things have gotten so fouled with eligibility in their systems that folks are getting knocked out of the pre-order queue. Here's the email Matthew got today:
Your recently placed AT&T Premier order was cancelled. If you believe your order was cancelled in error, please call us at 1-866-499-8008 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time. Web Order Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Thank you, The AT&T Premier Team

Fart Battles for iPhone. It’s what’s inside that counts!

HTC Desire in the US pipeline for ’select regional operators’ this August
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsSince neither T-Mobile nor AT&T have ponied up a branded, high-end Android device yet (though the former is almost certainly about to announce the Galaxy S), we were particularly chuffed to get the news from HTC today that it'll be bringing the lovely Desire to US shores through carriers in August. Thing is, it won't be coming through any of the big guys -- instead, it's destined for "select regional operators," and HTC is quick to note that the Hero has been "well received... in regional markets," so we imagine some of those same little guys will be scooping the Desire. We're told to wait for word from specific carriers on pricing and technical details, but the branded Desires have been confirmed to sport a 1GHz Snapdragon and Sense atop Android 2.1, two of the most important line items -- now let's just make sure we're already cracking on a Froyo update, yeah?HTC Desire in the US pipeline for 'select regional operators' this August originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 12:39:00 EST.
