Looks Like Apple Is Suing HTC (Again)
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No Comments
It appears Apple has filed yet another patent infringement lawsuit against HTC and its subsidiaries.
From the looks of it, the new suit, which was filed earlier this week in the same Delaware court as the initial lawsuit filed in March 2010, is adding two additional patents to the twenty the Cupertino company alleged were being infringed upon by HTC.
As the court documents (embedded below) show, Apple mentions four of its patents in the suit. However, two of them had already been included in the initial suit, and it appears like they are being re-included because of some spelling errors that were made by the USPTO.

Super AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD in direct sunlight… fight! (video)
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No CommentsBy now you know that (one of) AMOLED's Achilles' heel is readability in direct sunlight. But Samsung's been working hard to fix that with its new Super AMOLED technology. Techblog took the display to task by pitting the Samsung Galaxy S (4-inch, 480 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED) against the HTC Desire (3.7-inch 480 x 800 pixel AMOLED) and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (4-inch, 480 x 854 pixel TFT LCD). It's clear from the video embedded after the break that the LCD still has the edge in the harsh Greek sun, but the Super AMOLED certainly makes a much stronger showing than its AMOLED sib. In fact, differences in visibility between the LCD and Super AMOLED are often indistinguishable, like the picture above. That'll be good news for us just as soon as Samsung can start meeting demand... regardless of what Stevie J has to say. Check the video after the break and be sure to click the source for some more side-by-side pics, including a few taken indoors where that Super AMOLED display really shines.Continue reading Super AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD in direct sunlight... fight! Video: Japanese doctors use iPad during surgery
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No Comments
As we all know by now, the iPad can be used in many ways, and we know it's a hit product. The Japanese seem to embrace the device, too (it came out in that country a few days ago). And for some strange reason, Japanese doctors in particular love the iPad. Last month, we reported about one living in Fukuoka in Southern Japan who x-rayed his device and posted a picture on his blog.

Pictures and video: Robotic exoskeleton HAL-5 up and close
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No Comments
I had the chance to attend a TED event last weekend, namely the TedxTokyo conference, which took place for the second time in Japan. And as CrunchGear's Japan correspondent, I was naturally most interested in the geekiest presentation delivered: that of Professor Sankai from Tsukuba University (near Tokyo). (The video was of the presentation was uploaded just a few hours ago, which is why I waited till today.)
Sankai talked about and showed the latest version of his brainchild, the super-cool robotic exoskeleton HAL-5. Made by his spin-off company Cyberdyne (yes, HAL-5 and Cyberdyne), the robo suit helps paralyzed persons walk and lift heavy objects through transforming brain signals sensed through the skin into motion.

Videos: Mini robot performing a perfect back flip
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No Comments
Most of the robots out there have one common problem: They can only move in a slow, mechanical and chopping motion. In other words, the vast majority of robots lacks "elegance" and basic maneuverability. But not so this unnamed, fan made mini robot from Japan.

Video: Fujitsu’s care bear robot in action
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No Comments
Last month, we've shown you a teddy bear robot that's made by Fujitsu and looked pretty cute - on pictures. But now, after seeing a video (embedded below) of the bear actually "communicating" with a human, I'm not so sure anymore if it's really a good idea to use this to entertain elderly or younger people (the robot's target group).

Stargate Universe episode 116 Sabotage trailer and teaser
Posted on May 7, 2010 | No Comments
Okay, so I'm really starting to get into SGU. It was a long road to this point, but it's definitaly getting better. Yeah, it's not episodic like SG-1 or Atlantis, but the story line is certainly improving. I'm so excited about tonight that I didn't even watch the trailer or teaser embedded here or read the episode descriptions over at Gateworld. I'm only that anal about shows I like so I guess that says something.

Video: Android running on the iPhone… 3G!
Posted on May 7, 2010 | No Comments
You may recall a video last month that showed an iPhone 2G running Android. If not, let me refresh your memory.
Needless to say, all of us here at McCrunchables thought it was pretty freakin awesome. Well, you know what's awesomer? Android running on an iPhone 3G!
That's right, the buy-that-man-a-beer hacker responsible for the 2G Android port, David Wang, has managed to get Android running on the iPhone 3G.

Insert smiley emoticons hands-free with Auto Smiley
Posted on March 23, 2010 | No Comments
What would you do with the openFrameworks and an hour to kill? Would you create an application to detect when you're smiling and automatically insert ":)" into whatever program is currently running? Theo Watson did, and called it Auto Smiley! :) He released it as open source! :) We can't possibly have enough smiley icons embedded into our emails and IMs can we? :) I mean, we all spend all day every day smiling maniacally, right? :) :) :)
