Music for deaf people – Portable ears

Deaf people may not be able to hear music, but soon they might be able to feel it, even on the go. A concept device from German designer Frederik Podzuweit promises to make hearing music a reality for the deaf community based on synesthesia -- a type of sensory stimulus evokes the perception of an entirely different sense.

Bad News: Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid has been delayed

Bad news, everyone! Remember that Droid update that was supposed to hit today? Yeah, erm, about that.. It’s been delayed. Seemingly out of the blue, messages on the Verizon employee intranet changed from “Hurray! The update is coming on 3/18″ to big, red fonted messages of “OH GOD NEVERMIND WE’LL UPDATE YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE”. So what [...]

New technology heats up cell phones when callers get agitated

I can't think of too many use cases for this, but they did it: A team of researchers from the University of Tokyo (Japan's MIT if you will) has developed a technology that makes it possible to "physically" convey emotions from cell phone to cell phone. The key elements of the technology are a sensor and a Peltier device that's attached to the back of the phones. Read the rest on CrunchGear.

  • Finally! An age prediction machine based on mosquito-like frequencies

Finally! An age prediction machine based on mosquito-like frequencies

I think I speak for everyone when I say, “IT’S ABOUT TIME!” I mean, where were you the first time you wished for a machine that could predict someone’s age range just by emitting a mosquito buzzing sound that only people in certain age ranges could hear, thus alerting you to that person’s true age? I was so young I can barely remember when I first wished this would become a reality. Now that it’s here, I can hardly believe it! All these emotions! It’s like falling in love, getting your heart broken, and going to a funeral of a coworker you never actually met but exchanged e-mails with a few times, all in a split second!

T-Mobile toys with our emotions, says HTC HD2 announcement coming next week

Suspense and anticipation are sometimes far more satisfying than the actual reward, but I’m hoping that’s not the case for T-Mobile. From its official Twitter account, T-Mobile USA taunts us and pokes at what little we apparently know about the HTC HD2. Then it makes us wait a whole week before we find out what [...]

Nissan’s “Smiling Vehicle” shows emotions (video)

It seems the car industry doesn't have any problems left that need to be solved. Or what else can explain Nissan's shot at designing a car that can "show emotions"? The so-called Smiling Vehicle was jointly developed by the Hara Design Institute Nippon Design Center and the automaker. And yes, the mini vehicle, based on the Nissan Cube, does look friendly. The concept car is covered with a substance called ROICA, a polyurethane elastomer fiber from major chemical company Asahi Kasei. ROICA has the ability to deform by up to 900% and is normally used for producing shoes, clothes or car seats. Combine the material with Animatronics, and you get a car grill that can actually "smile".

  • Ford to give Sync some App Store flavor, opening API to devs in 2010

Ford to give Sync some App Store flavor, opening API to devs in 2010

Ford has already shown it can tie the controls of Sync-enabled vehicles to the music and contacts databases of drivers phones and PMPs and though it may take time before our emotions can be detected, the next step is extending that connectivity to downloadable apps on those devices. Since Sync first debuted, the explosion of the App Store concept has meant nearly every smartphone owner is packing plenty of ways to access and use information from the internet, but without an easy way to interact with it while driving. Extending access to vehicle controls could lead to programs like Pandora or Google's turn by turn navigation letting users change stations with their existing stereo knobs, or listen to directions via the in-car system by simply updating their existing software. The first ones to get a crack at it? A few university students, check after the break to see what they came up with given just a few weeks to test system out.

iPhone users: This virtual girlfriend will never leave you (video)

There are a number of Tamagotchi-style apps for the iPhone out there, but now Tokyo-based Xtone gives us Amamiya Momo, a virtual catgirl girlfriend that lives in your iPhone, speaks to you and expresses emotions (there are English subs for when she speaks Japanese). You can use the GPS function in your iPhone to let Momo know when you're home and when you're out. She will act cuter in the first case and can be quite cold in the latter. Even though Momo doesn't want to be touched, you can pat her head, touch her cheek and even try to look under her skirt.

Video: Geek creates dancing humanoid with iPhone head

Given the enormous creative energy some robot geeks regularly demonstrate, this took longer than I expected: A robot hobbyist (who is Japanese, I believe) created a humanoid with an iPhone head. To be more exact, he took a commercially available robot body kit and used an iPhone 3GS as its "head (through the dock connector).

Pleo is back, thanks to electronics and entertainment leader Senario, and we want to give you one. The $349 artificial dinosaur hit the news this April when Ugobe, its creator, filed for bankruptcy. However, it is thankfully still available from web outlets such as Amazon, Target, Best Buy and BotaBingBotaBoom. In July, it will also be sold on QVC Live, followed by the Sharper Image's Online Store.

KOBIAN proves that robots can now even get emotional (video)

Humanoid robots are being developed all over the world (but especially in Japan) with many purposes in mind, with assistance to the sick and elderly as two of the most important areas. The problem is that sick and elderly people are usually confronted with robots having a cold, emotionless aura. And this is where a new robot called KOBIAN comes in.
