ex-Sprint and Radio Shack execs try to save the world with eRecyclingCorps

65,000 tons of mobile phone e-waste are generated every year. The bad news is, only 1% of consumers choose to recycle their headsets when they upgrade. eRecyclingCorps is working with carriers to integrate the recycling process into the POS sale system at the retail store. eRecyclingCorps plans on working with the carriers to offer customer [...]

Incandescent bulb production left in the dark

Call Greenpeace, they’ll want to hear this. Today marked the end of 120 years of mass-produced incandescent bulbs for Toshiba. They had planned to stop manufacturing a year from now, but seems the timetable got moved up in favor of those more efficient LED bulbs. High fives all around people. Believe it or not, but Toshiba [...]

Toner-, ink- and paperless printer (video)

A Japanese company called Sanwa Newtec has developed a printer that works without toners, ink or (copy) paper. ThePrePeat RP-3100 is rather based on a line thermal head and special paper that's made of PET plastic and can be reused over and over again. In other words, if you have a sheet that you don't need any longer you can insert it back into the printer (where it gets "cleaned") and immediately print out a new document in one go. Each of those special sheets can be used 1,000 times, saving not only the costs for 1,000 sheets of copy paper but also 5.7kg of CO2 for the environment.

Nokia posts first quarterly loss in a decade and why it matters

Nokia's shares are down 6.02 percent today on news that Nokia suffered an $834 million loss due to falling handset sales. In this environment it's easy to wave this away as a crisis blip but there may be something more afoot. Nokia blamed the loss on component shortages, a valid concern. Apple has been buying up all the flash it can eat and companies like LG and Samsung are blowing out feature phones to directly compete with Nokia's lower-end models faster than anyone thought possible.

Meet DiGORO, the android that will one day clean your house for you

DiGORO is certainly not the first robot taking care of household chores out there, but it's definitely one of the coolest. Developed by a team of researchers at Honda Research Institute and other Japan-based organizations, the robot is capable of imitating human movements like wiping or moving objects from one place to another.

  • Sprint announces the “eco-friendly” Samsung Reclaim

Sprint announces the “eco-friendly” Samsung Reclaim

Let me preface this post by saying that this whole “green movement” is a freaking scam. No company is making it easier for anyone to “go green” and buying a cell phone that’s made with recyclable materials doesn’t do anything for the environment. You’re still plugging it in to charge and they’re still churning them out in the same factory as their other phones. Rant over. So, kudos to Samsung and Sprint for launching the “green” Reclaim today in NYC. It wouldn’t be a Samsung announcement without some nod towards the fact that the Reclaim is the first mobile phone in the US to be constructed from eco-friendly bio-plastic materials. The $50 QWERTY phone will roll out on August 16 at Sprint, Best Buy and Radio Shack locations. With every Reclaim purchase, Sprint will donate $2 from each sale to The Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre program.
