    iOS 4 apps: the best of what’s new and updated (live updates!)

    Although iOS 4 is out now with 1500 new APIs including multitasking support, your apps won't support all those new features out of the gate -- they'll need to be updated to take full advantage of the iPhone's new tricks. Happily, Apple started accepting iOS 4-ready apps last week, so there's a handful of interesting apps already available, and we're sure more are on the way. Here's a quick list of what you can check out right now -- we'll be updating this as we go, so check back for more!
    • Dropbox: Everyone's favorite file-syncing tool can now sync and complete uploads in the background, and also adds in support for fast app switching.
    • Evernote: the notes-in-the-cloud app adds support for fast app switching, and can continue to record audio notes in the background.
    • Pandora: Yes, you can finally play Pandora in the background -- and the quick music controls on the left-most panel of the app switcher even control playback when it's in the background. Nifty.
    • New York Times: Nothing major, but the Gray Lady supports fast app switching, so you can jump right back into an article without reloading.
    • ESPN ScoreCenter: Supports fast app switching, although you'll still have to open it up for scores to refresh, since there's no background updating API.
    • How to Cook Everything: Funny that a cookbook is one of the first iOS4 apps out there, but we're Mark Bittman fans, so this is pretty cool -- it supports fast app switching, so you don't have to reload a recipe every time you close the app. Oh, and it's got newer high-res art for the iPhone 4. Tasty.
    • Fandango: Now has fast app switching, so you can juggle other tasks while buying your movie tickets.
    • LinkedIn: Yep, LinkedIn's iPhone app adds fast app switching to the mix.
    So those are some highlights -- we'll keep updating as we go here, but most of the early iOS 4-ready apps are just adding fast app switching. We won't lie, once you see it in action, you'll wonder how you lived without it, but we're still waiting to see developers get wild on those 1499 other new APIs -- let us know what you're seeing out there!

    By Sean Captain, Technologizer We’re hearing a lot about 3D television these days– from TV manufacturers, directors, journalists and pundits. But do consumers like it? And will they pay for it? To find out, I convened a mini focus group of adults in their 30s, 40s, and 50s,; a teenager; and a pair of kids under 10. We met at the Samsung Experience store in New York City a few weeks ago. After watching a wild assortment of clips–from The Daily Show to a Dunkin Donuts commercial to Monsters vs. Aliens–they had a mildly favorable impression. But no one was jumping up to buy a new TV and a pile of expensive active-shutter LCD glasses. Since then, ESPN launched its 3D service with the World Cup. So I went back to watch the high-end sports coverage and talk to more folks. Everyone, on both occasions, found something to like. For a few it was sports—the World Cup and a basketball game. Others went gaga for Transformers 2, and one spectator really did enjoy the commercials. The viewers didn’t unanimously like any particular clip, however. And while younger folks were sometimes more enthusiastic, the adults were bigger fans at other times. No one wanted to shell out for the experience at home.

    Everyone is busy talking about Microsoft Kinect (the project formerly known as Natal), but to me, some much bigger news just dropped at E3 from Microsoft: ESPN live sports access. Simply put: this was the only thing holding me back from completely canceling my cable subscription. As soon as this goes live, I'm done with cable forever. No, this live sporting access won't be entirely free, but it's one hell of a deal. You simply have be an Xbox Live Gold member (about $50 a year), and you'll get access to over 3,500 live events a year. In HD. Did I mention it was $50 a year? My cable bill is currently double that -- a month.

    During our time at ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut this past week, we were able to peek inside every nook and cranny of the company's technological side. We discovered some pretty remarkable things about the culture and attitude toward innovation, and while the bulk of that discovery will be seen in a forthcoming Engadget Show segment, we couldn't help but share some insight from a kind fellow who has been deeply involved in the blinking lights portion of ESPN from day one. We sat down for a brief one-on-one interview with Chuck Pagano -- ESPN's executive vice president of technology -- following the outfit's 3D launch, and while we were both bitter over the 1-1 result in the South Africa vs. Mexico match, he was understandably excited about the future of his firm's latest channel.     Listen, it's all well and good that DirecTV gets to make these grandiloquent announcements that it's going to offer this or that sport in 3D—today's news is that DirecTV will be the first TV provider to show a Major League Baseball game in 3D with this July 10 and July 11's Yankees-Mariners clash on the YES Network—but I have one question: why in God's name is Fox Soccer Channel still shown in standard definition? That's right, four years after I purchased my first HDTV specifically so I could watch ESPN-HD and ESPN2-HD coverage of the World Cup, I'm still staring at SD coverage on FSC with DirecTV. It's all a little bit stupid.

    More info on Sony and FIFA's plan to bring us the World Cup in 3D. It turns out that Sony will only film one game per matchday in 3D. That's for all 25 days of the tournament, so if multiple games are played on the same day only one game, presumably the highest profile, will get the 3D treatment.

    You guys have heard of Google, right? Congratulations, you're smarter than the likes of Sonyand Adidas! A new study has found that these companies, and other prominent FIFA World Cup sponsors, like Coca-Cola and Emirates, have failed to leverage Google (specifically) and the Internet (more generally) to link themselves to the event. You'd think that after shelling out so much money to be known as "the official TV of the FIFA World Cup" or whatever they'd have a guy making sure their Web sites pop up when you search for, you know, "soccer world cup" and "world cup 2010." I wouldn't be surprised if CrunchGear ranks higher in Google searches at this point!
