Live Blog: Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 announcement

It’s that time again, folks. The day that is looked upon with excitement by fan boys and cynics alike: it’s an Apple announcement day. Apple has already made it perfectly clear that today’s announcement will bring details about iPhone OS 4.0 – but what ever will they be? Will it multitask? Will there be interface overhauls? [...]

    Review: The Apple iPad

In these times we have little opportunity for mystical religious experience. By “religious” I mean the feeling that something exciting is about to happen – whether after death or immediately, through the intercession of a divine being, a miracle in life. The neophilic mind has craved magic, craved the new and spectacular, since prehistory. Man [...]

GameFly iPhone App finally gets proper Game Queue management support

I’m a fan of GameFly. As a hardcore gamer (as in I spend too much time doing it, not as in I’m particularly good) who gets bored of games quick, it just makes economic sense. That’s why when GameFly announced their GameCenter iPhone app last October, I just about ate my pants in excitement. That’s [...]

Mobile companies band together and rise against Apple

When one thinks of mobile apps, it’s tough to think of anything other than the ones for the iPhone. Apple now has a [...]

    Koreans watch Avatar in “4D”

One important factor that can explain Avatar's success at the box office is certainly the 3D experience viewers can have when they walk into the right movie theater. But what about watching Avatar in "4D"? In Korea, you can. The nation's leading multiplex chain, CJ-CGV, runs a handful of so-called "4D plexes" where the experience includes moving seats, laser lights or wind. In the case of Avatar, CJ-CGV uses a total of 30 different "real-life" effects to add some excitement to the movie.

Nexus One slated to arrive in AT&T 3G flavor

When the Google Nexus One was announced early last month, Android fans went giddy with excitement, especially since there is an option to buy it unlocked. The only downside was that if you wanted 3G service, you were limited to T-Mobile’s decent, but smaller network. AT&T users are still out of luck and limited to [...]

T-Mobile myTouch with a 3.5mm jack caught on camera

Not too long ago, HTC announced -- much to our excitement -- that they would be putting 3.5mm jacks in all of their handsets. In non-geek speak, that means that you wouldn't need some annoying little one inch, easy-to-lose cable adapter just to be able to use your own headphones. One of the last phones to sneak out with a non-3.5mm jack was the HTC T-Mobile myTouch. It was actually a pretty decent handset -- but that useless jack really killed our buzz when we reviewed it. Fortunately, it looks like HTC and T-Mobile are going back to fix the error in their ways.

CES Day 1: Robots, ereaders, and more

We're almost through day one of CES here in sunny Las Vegas and we're pretty pumped. The mood of the show is tempered and realistic. There's no froth and it seems that CE manufacturers are just glad they made it out of 2009 alive and are now looking forward to a quiet but strong new year.

  • Palm’s Jon Rubinstein named a ‘Geek of the Year’

Palm’s Jon Rubinstein named a ‘Geek of the Year’

Just to clarify right out of the gate, the "year" Fast Company is referring to is 2009, but nonetheless, it's an award we're sure Jon is happy to have. 11 geeks were found worthy of the "Geek of the Year" award in '09, with the likes of Evan Williams and Biz Stone (Twitter), David S. Goyer (the creator of Flash Forward on ABC), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Neill Blomkamp (the writer of District 9) joining him. The justification for Jon making the cut?
"He came on board as the new chairman of Palm and brought about the Web OS and the Palm Pre, the start of a line of products that is the best hope for reintroducing the geek masses to Palm."
After speaking with him on our first-ever Engadget Show and falling head over heels in love with webOS, we can't help but agree. And yes, after last year's introduction at CES, it's all we can do to contain our excitement for this Thursday.

  • HP files for ‘Zeen’ and ‘Airlife’ trademarks for handheld devices

HP files for ‘Zeen’ and ‘Airlife’ trademarks for handheld devices

Having only recently marked its return to the handheld computing space with the iPAQ Glisten, HP seems intent on forging ahead with more hardware in the coming year. The above trademark applications -- filed in September and October 2009 -- mark out some very broad categories, but we can narrow them down a little with the help of some context. Given all the industry excitement over tablet devices, the Zeen could well be the name of a forthcoming slate-shaped machine and accompanying software, while Airlife seems to be planted firmly in the smartphone arena. The moniker suggests a software ecosystem rather than actual hardware, but that would make little sense with just one handset out there; if we were the betting type (and believe us, we aren't), we'd probably expect to see more mobiles coming from the computing giant in order to take advantage. Of course, companies don't always follow through on trademark applications, but it sure seems as if HP is casting a wary eye over the burgeoning handheld market (and / or planning to not get left behind in the months ahead).
