Plex for Mac OS X adds hardware h.264 video decoding

Exciting news from Plex, the media center for Mac OS X that won my heart a long time ago. The devs have announced that they've integrated Apple's new video decode acceleration framework into the latest build. In English, that means all h.264-encoded video—and there's a lot of it out there—can be sent to your GPU for decoding, giving your CPU a bit more breathing room. It should make for significantly better 1080p video performance.

Jabra announces white version of their Stone headset

When Jabra announced the Stone headset last year (and tormented Matt), we really liked it. John dug the design, and Jabra's headset's never lack in the quality department. What they were lacking was color. Well good news, if you've been holding out because you wanted a headset that matched your earbuds, Jabra is ready to help you out.

Remeber that post about the wire shoe thing?

Exciting news, friends. I've just come back from the future, and I have some news to share. In the year 2050, the United Nations will hold a "Remember Blogging?" panel, and it will be chaired by the encapsulated head, à la Futurama, of Cory Doctorow. There will come a time in the panel when Doctorow's head turns and says, "Now, blogging wasn't all shits and giggles. Some of it was truly dreadful. Par example..." This will all be done in Mandarin Chinese, of course, which replaced English as the lingua franca of the world in 2035. Anyhow, Doctoro's head will say, "You see, I seem to remember a post on reasonably popular tech blog CrunchGear that described some sort of wire-frame shoe. It was rubbish."

Ericsson trials HSPA-LTE interoperability, we count 7 Gs in total

Since it'll be eons until we enjoy the kind of 4G coverage that we've grown used to on 2G (and to a lesser extent, 3G), manufacturers and carriers are hard at work making sure that we've got a reliable way to interoperate for the foreseeable future -- TeliaSonera, for instance, wants to swap out its customers' modems for LTE / HSPA dual-mode versions once they're available next year. To that end, Ericsson and ST-Ericsson are trumpeting that they've become the first to establish "LTE and HSPA mobility" in accordance with 3GPP's Release 8 specification, which dictates this sort of stuff in a way everyone can agree on (that's a good thing). Verizon's naturally more interested in the CDMA handoffs that have already gone down, but for AT&T and most of the rest of the world, this is exciting news indeed.
