AT&T’s BlackBerry Bold 9700 starts shipping out to top bananas
Posted on November 17, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, RIM, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, BlackBerry OS
Got an AT&T Premier account at your disposal? Does your nine to five require you to wear a suit on every day that ends in "y?" If you're nodding your head and simultaneously thinking about just how tight that top button is around your neck, there's a decent chance that you can get AT&T's version of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 right now. 'Course, those on T-Mobile have already been enjoying the spoils for a few hours now, but judging by the unboxing shots in the read link, that window of US exclusivity looks to be all but shut. So, anyone jabbing the boss for an upgrade?AT&T's BlackBerry Bold 9700 starts shipping out to top bananas originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 15:18:00 EST. iPhone 3GS coming to Orange UK on November 10
Posted on October 26, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Orange, GSM, HSDPA, Apple, iPhone OS
So you've been lusting after that spit-shined touchy-swipey device from Apple, huh? If you're in the UK, come November 10 you'll finally have a choice of iPhone provider (both for 3G and 3GS flavors), with The Guardian confirming the date as Orange's launch of the coveted handset. O2's exclusivity runs out on the ninth of that month, but we shouldn't be too quick to rejoice, as Orange will seek to "add value" rather than undercut O2's pricing. Independent retailers Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U are also expected to stock the iPhone on behalf of Orange, and lest we forget Vodafone will be joining in with its own offering in early 2010. The CEO of 3 has also indicated a strong desire to bring Cupertino's baby onboard, though that's unlikely to happen before the midpoint of next year. So it'll get cheaper, just very... very slowly.iPhone 3GS coming to Orange UK on November 10 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 08:43:00 EST. AT&T Mobility CEO suggests iPhone exclusivity will end… sometime
Posted on October 23, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, ATT, Apple
Well, it's not much, but AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega doesn't exactly have to go too far out on a limb to attract attention when he's talking about something as big as an end to iPhone exclusivity. His latest, and seemingly most extensive ruminations on the matter came during a conference call with analysts this week, where he reportedly said that AT&T has a "legacy of having a great portfolio...that will continue after the iPhone is no longer exclusive to us," and that he thinks AT&T's ability to drive results "will continue after the iPhone." He did seem to dial things back a bit later in the call, however, switching to langauge like "even if we lose exclusivity" instead of "after the iPhone," and going on to extol the virtues of the iPhone, noting that "others will try to emulate them [Apple], but that device by far is the best in terms of ease of use."AT&T Mobility CEO suggests iPhone exclusivity will end... sometime originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 18:23:00 EST. To sate that "look good, feel good" need in all of us, LG has brought out the ultimate in techie chic: a watchphone. Do the consumer in you a favor and come along to Engadget Classic where we have the full scoop on the GD910.LG GD910 Watch Phone review originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 12:24:00 EST. Motorola wants everyone to Cliq, looks beyond T-Mobile
Posted on September 15, 2009 | No CommentsLast Thursday, Motorola announced its first Android-based smartphone, Cliq, alongside its new custom Android interface, MOTOBLUR. Although no specific availability or pricing information was released, it was pretty clear (read: T-Mo’s CTO was on stage) that T-Mobile would be the exclusive carrier of MOTO’s new Hail Mary device. But that was so last week. Fast forward [...] -
Analysts believe iPhone will become non-AT&T exclusive in a year
Posted on August 31, 2009 | No Comments
Oh, Gene Munster. You keep popping up like the loose Cheerios my nine-month-old daughter drops at breakfast. What are you up to this time, you little scamp?
Munster of Piper Jaffray "predicts" that AT&T will lose its iPhone exclusivity by the end of 2010, thereby rendering the company impotent and insolvent. Some contenders for the iPhone throne include Verizon. This ignores the fact that AT&T is fighting like a champ to keep the iPhone until 2011 but it seems the popular perception of AT&T as a pile of fail may put a damper on Apple's wish to stay put.

North America-bound GSM Palm Pre spied and certified
Posted on August 14, 2009 | No CommentsIt’s been spotted on holiday in Vietnam, and companies from Spain and the United Kingdom have already snapped it up for local consumption, but the elusive GSM Palm Pre has been noticeably inconspicuous on its own home continent. Well, not so anymore: a gifted internet detective found telltale signs that the beloved Son of Sunnyvale [...] -
Chinese iPhone to sell 1 million units first year
Posted on July 28, 2009 | No Comments
iPhonAsia has some information on China's exciting WiFi-crippled iPhone. The device will cost less than the smuggled, grey-market iPhones currently available in China and will include special apps for the Chinese consumer.
Considering Apple and China's track record these last few weeks I wonder how much good will Apple last left in the land of the violent Foxconn security team.

Rural Cellular Association agrees: Verizon’s new exclusivity deal sucks
Posted on July 21, 2009 | No CommentsJust a few days ago, Verizon announced a change to the way they’d handle exclusive handset deals: rather than holding on to all of their exclusive handsets for years and years, they’d let any small carrier (defined as any carrier with under 500,000 customers) offer the same phones after a 6-month absolute exclusivity period. It [...] -

G.S.M. Palm Pre spotted in Vietnam
Posted on June 30, 2009 | No Comments
Waves of exultation and joy must be coming out of Saigon as the first secret G.S.M. Palm Pres begin wending their way out of the secret Pre factories in the jungles to the south. A crack team of commandoes have wrested one of these super secretive models out of the hands of an unsuspecting courier and taken video and photos of it.
Remember that the Palm Pre originally came in G.S.M. flavor back at MWC 2008 and that O2 and Movistar probably have Pre exclusivity which allows us to assume the G.S.M. model will drop sooner than later.

Palm: Prithee, good sirs, speak not of Palm Pre tethering
Posted on June 15, 2009 | No Comments
In an example of rolling over in the name of "good relationships," the Pre Dev Wiki has shut down their tethering page because "Sprint could get angry." This is in stark contrast with iPhone devs who couldn't give two squirts about "good relationships" and instead produce interesting technical content including unlocked phones.
"We have been politely cautioned by Palm that any discussion of tethering during the Sprint exclusivity period (and perhaps beyond—we don't know yet) will probably cause Sprint to complain to Palm, and if that happened then Palm would be forced to react against the people running the IRC channel and this wiki.
