TOPIO Dio: Meet Vietnam’s first service robot

Tosy (warning: the site takes a long time to load), Vietnam's first - and only - robot venture, has been flying under the radar since the debut of TOPIO, their table tennis-playing humanoid, in 2007. The company was established as early as 2002 and has been mainly manufacturing toy robots since. But it seems as if their first "life-sized" service robot, dubbed TOPIO Dio, is a pretty cool humanoid.

NTT DoCoMo shows off automatic email generator for mobiles (video)
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsDemonstrated at the Wireless Technology Park 2010 exhibition last week, this automatic email generator from NTT DoCoMo promises to take just three words' worth of input, whether spoken or typed in, and convert them into a fully fleshed out, anatomically correct email. An anthropomorphic genie creature serves as your guide on this journey into gimmick world, although some rather nice sophistication is also on the cards. The carrier's rep informs us that the composition of the missive will be dependent on the sort of person that you are and your relationship to the recipient. Thus, an email from a teenager to his parents will read quite differently to one from an employee to her boss, even if both believe they're writing to their draconian overlords. 3D continues to be a hot topic in the tech world. Tokyo-based middleware company HI Corp. today announced [JP] it has developed software that makes it possible to convert regular 2D cell phone games into 3D games. HI claims its image-rendering software, the new version of "MascotCapsule", lets users then play the 3D games without glasses.

Fujitsu to unveil improved color e-paper screen

Fujitsu Laboratories announced today that they will be unveiling a new version of their color electronic paper display at the company’s Fujitsu Forum exhibition in Tokyo next week. The new screen is a supposed to be a third brighter and has a contrast ratio of 7:1, three times that of the previous model. These improvements are mostly due to the use of a new liquid crystal material with superior reflective characteristics.

Even though it's not an electronics company, Bridgestone (the tire maker) is one of a handful Japanese firms that has been experimenting with e-paper in recent years. Last October, Bridgestone claimed the bragging rights for the world's first flexible e-book reader. And a few days ago, the company showcased the newest version of their e-paper, now named QR-LPD (Quick Response Liquid Power Display), during an industry expo in Tokyo.

ENON: Fujitsu robot talks shoppers into buying stuff (videos)

We saw Fujitsu's "service robot" ENON back in October 2008 during the CEATEC exhibition in Chiba/Japan (see video below), and it seems the friendly guy has been selling well in the meantime. The robot can be used as an information terminal, for entertainment purposes, patrolling, assistance etc. And last weekend, ENON could be seen in the wild, namely in a shopping mall in Osaka.
That specific ENON spent the entire Saturday interacting with customers. Equipped with a camera and face recognition software, the robot is capable of detecting a human's gender and age. Combine this with ENON's ability to "speak" and move around, and you get a store clerk of a very different kind.

In June, Epson said it has begun mass-production of the world’s first HTPS-TFT panel boasting WUXGA resolution (1,920 x 1,200 pixels). And today, five months later, the same company announced [press release in English] what it claims is the world's first 4K-compatible HTPS (high-temperature polysilicon) TFT LCD panel for 3LCD projectors.

World’s first camera goes on public display in Macau
Posted on May 24, 2009 | No CommentsIf you thought the golden anniversary of Olympus' Pen camera was something, get a load of this. From now until August 23rd, an elaborate exhibition entitled 'The Invention of Photography and the Earliest Photographs' will showcase some of digital imaging's earliest tools, including the planet's oldest camera. The wooden sliding box shown above will undoubtedly be the centerpiece of the Macau-based expo, though it will be surrounded by 250 photography antiques and 180 old photos, which were collections lent by the Nicephore Niepce Museum and 12 other museums, cultural institutions and private collectors around the world. Anyone planning on making the trip over? Make sure you take a few snapshots with your 90s-era point-and-shoot, cool?
