Apple’s Phil Schiller Speaks On Censored iPhone Dictionaries, But Ignores The Bigger Issues

A lone messenger has emerged from the impenetrable fortress that is Apple's App Store, and his name is Phil Schiller. Earlier this week, John Gruber of Daring Fireball wrote a lengthy column detailing the plight of Ninja Words (iTunes Link), a sleek iPhone dictionary that uses Wiktionary as its data source. Gruber wrote that the application had been rejected for including numerous common swear words, going on to write that "Apple censored an English dictionary." Not so, says Schiller, who is Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing and is widely regarded as one of the more recognizable 'faces' of Apple, after Steve Jobs. In a rare moment of semi-transparency, Schiller has written back to Gruber, on the record, in an attempt to point out errors in the original column. I've included an excerpt below, and you can find the full letter in Gruber's post (it's well worth reading if you've been tracking the App Store closely).

WTF: College student faces up to 10 years in prison for modding game consoles

This is just ridiculous. Doesn’t the federal government have better things to do than track down college kids who mod their game consoles? Seriously. Matt Crippen, a 27-year-old CSU-Fullerton student has been indicted on two counts of violating the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. He faces up to 10 years in prison for modding his (and [...]

Japanese dude faces 2 years in prison, $96,000 fine for hosting 1,000+ Nintendo DS ROMs on Web site

Here's a tip: this isn't 1998, and you shouldn't go around making “Web pages” that are filled with Nintendo ROMs. If you do, you could end up like the Japanese guy who's now facing two years in prison and a $96,000 fine.

Video: The Nao robot tries so very hard to make your life a little easier

  • AT&T announces 7.2Mbps HSPA rollout plans

AT&T announces 7.2Mbps HSPA rollout plans

We knew AT&T had an HSPA upgrade in the works, and now the company has announced its plans, with initial rollout beginning later this year and reaching completion in 2011. That will overlap only slightly with LTE, which AT&T plans to put into trials in 2010 and start melting our faces in 2011. The HSPA upgrade takes the network from 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps in theoretical speed, and AT&T also plans to nearly double the amount of wireless spectrum it dedicates to 3G in metropolitan areas -- which should come as a relief to city dwellers who haven't managed more than a couple minutes of sustained conversation since mid-2008. To support the increased bandwidth of HSPA, AT&T also plans on adding thousands of new cell site backhaul connections, while also rolling out 3G service to 20 new metro areas and deploying 2,100 new cell sites in total. HSPA-sporting mobile data cards and smartphones will be available "later this year."
