PC Gamer’s ‘best PC games of all time’ list is the worst thing you’ll read, possibly ever

Oh, it's on. PC Gamer, one of the last gaming magazines out there, has put together what it considers to be the best PC games of all time with the help of its readers. Of all time—let that sink in. OK? Then can you explain to me how in the hell Modern Warfare 2 is the sixth best PC game of all time? This could be the worst list I've ever seen.

Asus Ares 5970 is truly two 5870s slapped together, no holds barred

The ATI Radeon HD 5970 is essentially two 5870s slapped together, but underclocked a little bit so as not to melt a hole through your carpet (but will melt a hole through your bank account~!) Asus saw that and was like, "Pfft, wait till you see what we've come up with." It's called the Asus Ares 5970, a true-to-life dual 5870 solution that doesn't downclock nothin' for nobody. Slight problem: it might not actually come out here in the U.S.

Were you one of the 2 million Xbox Live users who used Facebook this past week?

At least 2 million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook this past week, which I guess means the feature is a bit of a success. (You'll recall that Microsoft launched Facebook and Twitter to so much enthusiasm last week.) Mysteriously, Microsoft didn't reveal the number of people who logged into Twitter. Is this the end of Twitter?

First screenshots of Fallout MMO (that may never be released)

Long before Fallout 3 there was Fallout 2. And before that, Fallout. Interplay made the two first games, while Bethesda made the third one under some sort of licensing deal that would allow Interplay to create new Fallout games not connected to Fallout 3. Then Bethesda sued Interplay, which puts a game it was working on, a Fallout MMO, in jeopardy. These are screenshots of that game, to be used as evidence during the legal proceedings.

  • Can we blame Nintendo’s profit drop on the lack of gamer’s games?

Can we blame Nintendo’s profit drop on the lack of gamer’s games?

It hasn't been the best couple of months for Nintendo. Profits were down for the six months leading up to September, which the company blames on the strong yen and the Wii's price cut. Net sales, too, were down, some 34.5 percent. Fair enough, and those reasons are likely to explain Nintendo's situation, but is there something else going on? I know Pat Buchanan, the older gentlemen that he is, always uses the phrase “the chickens have come home to roost,” and I think it's applicable here. Perhaps Nintendo's strategy of selling the Wii to the “casual” crowd (housewives and the like, to simplify this) has finally run out of gas?

    Fallout Holocaust: Experiments in ultra-violence

Sandbox games are nothing new, but in general, most players try to play the game in the way the designers intended: be good, complete quests, and reach the eventual end of the game in an orderly fashion. Sometimes though, you just have that urge to be bad. Gamer and writer Alexander Gambotto-Burke has written about his descent into madness, and how purely visceral and difficult it is to play a psychopath. He talks about wandering the streets of Megaton using a sledgehammer like a slaughterhouse worker, killing the residents in their sleep. The interesting part is that he starts to really feel bad about it.

Fallout 3 game of the year edition comin’ atcha October 16

If you're one of the people who have been holding out on buying Fallout 3 and its various expansion packs, take note: the game of the year edition of the Bethesda RPG will be available on October 16. Well, that's the European date, but I can't see the North American date being too different.

Ouch. Bethesda just said, on the official PlayStation blog, that it's going to delay the release of all that Fallout 3 DLC for the PS3. Yup, PS3 gamers won't be able to play the DLC until the end of September. Ladies and gentlemen! Fallout 3 can be yours this weekend for $25 on Steam. That's a full 50 percent off the regular price. And if you have an extra couple of dollars to spend, may I recommend the two most recent expansion packs, Broken Steel and Point Lookout? On the onslaught of rubbish motion control in video games today

It's time to stick up for the standard-issue video game controller. Yes, new, whiz-bang motion control, like the kind Sony and Microsoft demonstrated at E3 this week, may well be technologically impressive, and I appreciate the amount of work put into their development, but I can't help but think, “Man, I have zero interest in any of that.” And I'm sure I'm not alone in preferring the standard-issue controller, like the DualShock 3 (or mouse and keyboard, for when I fire up the odd round or two of Team Fortress 2) or Xbox 360 control pad. Heck, I'd sooner try to play Fallout 3 with an 8-bit NES controller than punch the air, like a jerk, with Wii Motion Control Plus Boxing.

E3 2009: Why would you buy a PS3 in this day and age?

Are any of you ardent Sony PS3 supporters concerned with the way things have turned out? You lost Final Fantasy exclusivity (well, outside of Japan) at last year's E3, and Metal Gear this year. Those are two of the biggest franchises that made PlayStation what it is today. Or what it was yesterday, as it were. I'm just trying to think, if I were to buy a PS3 today, what's in it for me?
