Sony Ericsson’s Zylo slider earns FCC approval
Posted on June 12, 2010 | No CommentsThere's nothing quite like the harsh lighting of an FCC approval lab to call out a phone's true colors -- if a handset can look good here, it can look good pretty much anywhere. Needless to say, Sony Ericsson's Zylo isn't looking quite as slick and put-together here as it does in the company's own press shots; if we had to guess, countless engineers have smudged it up and beat the heck out of it moving it from machine to machine while taking radiation measurements by the time it made it to the camera. Anyhow, the version we're seeing here is quadband GSM plus UMTS bands I and VIII, which works out to 900 / 2100; in other words, there's not a snowball's chance you'll be using it for high-speed data stateside. Not a huge loss, we figure.

HTC ‘Aria’ tapped for June announce on AT&T?
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsHere's what we know: there are at least two Android products from HTC that have recently secured FCC approval with support for AT&T's 3G bands. Of course, that alone doesn't mean that they're coming to AT&T -- far from it -- but PhoneDog has it on authority from a "connect that works for AT&T" that there'll be a phone known as the HTC "Aria" launching on June 7 with Android 2.1 and Sense. Whether this will be an AT&T-tweaked Legend, the PC70110 (pictured), or something else entirely is an open question, but one thing's for sure: AT&T seriously can't get enough Android hardware right now.

Acer ‘Liquid Stream’ S110 scores FCC approval: Android, 720p video recording
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsSo a new Android-powered handset from Acer popped up at IO last week -- the so-called "Liquid Stream," which would presumably succeed the Liquid and Liquid e in Acer's lineup. AndroidGuys is reporting that the phone is currently running Android 2.1 (which we'd hope would morph into 2.2 by release) paired with a Snapdragon core and a 5 megapixel camera capable of 720p video capture, so it's the "5.0 Megapixel HD 720p" inscription on the back of the diagram in this FCC filing for a phone called the Acer S110 (along with the obvious similarity in shape) that's allowing us to deduce that these two bad boys are one and the same. Android France has it pegged for October -- and it's got 850 / 1900MHz HSPA, so we could theoretically see a few land in North America by the time this all shakes out. Who's interested?

Sony Ericsson’s X10 mini meets the FCC
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsThe biggie-sized X10 is now shipping in parts of the world, but let's be honest: every once in a while, you'd probably rather carry around a tiny scale replica of the thing. Of course, Sony Ericsson was happy to oblige with the announcement of the X10 mini back in February -- and now, it looks like we're getting close to finally enjoying some face time with the smallest (and arguably cutest) Android device to come out of a top-tier manufacturer. The version that just scored FCC approval isn't for US sale on account of its Euro-only 3G bands, but at least they'll be the cutest, smallest 3G bands you've ever seen.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro lands FCC approval

"Hello, FCC speaking. How can I help you?"
"Hey, Sony Ericsson here. So basically, we took this phone you guys already approved, and just... you know, slapped a keyboard on it. We cool?"
"Well, no, we aren't 'cool.' Go ahead and submit another set of test results and we'll get back to you."
"But..."
"...no 'buts.' Just do it." (click)
And that, you see, brings us to this filing for the Vivaz pro. It's not a North America-bound version -- there's no 850 / 1900MHz or AWS 3G -- but at least it'll get you some high-speed data if you're in 900 or 2100MHz markets (read: Europe). Dell Aero slips though the FCC, ready for Q2 launch
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No CommentsWith FCC approval out of the way it looks like the Dell Aero is all set to meet the leaked Q2 launch goal. Sure, we've already seen a generic Dell Mini 3iX (model V02B) pass through the FCC with AT&T (Canadian Bell Mobility, Telus, Rogers) bands back in November. But today's Mini 3iG (model V01B) sports 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, UMTS 1900 / 850 support, and the undeniable "Aero" marketing name destined to grace the first of many Android handsets made by Dell (uh hem, Foxconn) to be sold Stateside. For whatever that's worth.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 hits the FCC again, this time with AT&T’s 3G bands
Posted on December 21, 2009 | No CommentsYes, you might recall a version of Sony Ericsson's mighty X10 getting FCC approval last week -- but this one isn't quite the same. This time around, we've got WCDMA 850 / 1900 accompanying the quadband EDGE, which is heartwarming news for anyone on AT&T, Rogers, Bell, or Telus, though the complete lack of branding on the FCC's test unit leaves us to speculate wildly over which of those carriers (if any) will brand the unit -- and more importantly, whether any will be on shelves before frickin' 2011. In the meantime, we're guessing SonyStyle sales are a lock -- so get your save on.

TerreStar Genus satphone gets beamed into an FCC lab
Posted on December 2, 2009 | No CommentsThat projected Q1 2010 availability window for AT&T's first dual-mode satphone (and first satphone, period, for that matter) is looking pretty dang obtainable now that Elektrobit -- the device's manufacturer -- has secured FCC approval. As you can tell from the laboratory mugshot here, TerreStar's Genus is a pretty unassuming-looking Windows Mobile smartphone, which is pretty amazing when you consider that it'll more or less guarantee you coverage anywhere in the most ridiculously remote regions of North America and surrounding waters. Test documentation confirms that it'll be ready with US HSPA out of the gate, so if you can hold out for a month or two and stomach some likely hardcore plans and per-minute / per-megabyte charges, get ready to impress your co-pilot in the midst of that next offshore race.

Motorola Motus gets FCC approval, Sholes Tablet looking legit

Whenever a Moto with triband HSPA hits the FCC, we're naturally going to end up scouring the documentation -- what can we say, it's in our blood -- and today we've found a model claiming to be the rumored Motus. As a refresher, this is a device we'd heard would rock the Android midrange with a 5 megapixel AF cam, 3.1-inch QVGA display, and HSPA for a Q1 '10 release, so it's not much more than a tweaked CLIQ as far as we're concerned -- but the big news here might actually be that the Motus filing adds legitimacy to the leaked roadmap where we'd originally heard of it. That document made mention of a "Sholes Tablet" that takes the already-high-end DROID / MILESTONE further upmarket with an 8 megapixel cam and xenon flash, and as you can imagine, we'll be listening to our friends at the FCC pretty intently over the next few weeks to see if we can catch that one sliding through.

North American version of T-Mobile Pulse gets FCC approval, but for which carrier?

Android-powered handsets are still rare enough so that the world can't afford to segment them by continent -- when a big model comes out, it's pretty much got to go everywhere. Okay, correction: it doesn't have to go everywhere, but we certainly want it to -- and fortunately, it looks like some lucky carrier in the Americas is signed up for the Huawei U8220. You might know this puppy better as the Pulse over on T-Mobile in Europe, and a new variant of the device -- model number U8220-6 -- has just garnered FCC approval in the past few days with 3G on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. That means Bell, Telus, Rogers, Fido, and AT&T could all be on tap to get this one; we doubt that AT&T would make its inaugural Android plunge with a midrange Huawei, but stranger things have happened.

LG’s Android-equipped GW620 hits the FCC

By all accounts, the GW620 seems to be a pretty timid first entry into the Android fray for LG -- it's a pretty plain-vanilla set with nary a software customization to be found -- but there's definitely a market for that sort of thing, so it's good to see that they're making nice progress toward retail availability with an FCC filing here. Of course, as with far too many phones, FCC approval has precisely zero bearing on whether it'll actually be offered in the New World; these guys are just crossing dotting their I's and crossing their T's as they prepare for a proper launch in key markets around the globe where travel to the US seems like a possibility. The particular version we've got here is the GW620F variant, rocking quadband GSM / EDGE plus WCDMA Band V which offers up 850MHz 3G. If we had to guess, there's also 2100 in there, which would make it likely bound for Australia. With DROID Fever still in full effect, of course, it could launch in Antarctica and we're not sure the Android community would be paying too much mind.
