EVO 4G gets 802.11n WiFi by changing two lines of code

The EVO 4G has a lot of weight in the smartphone arena thanks to WiMAX and that 4.3-inch screen, but though its Broadcom BCM4329 silicon also technically supports 802.11n WiFi over 2.4GHz, the protocol was disabled for some reason. Thankfully it's just a matter of ten characters to enable greater throughput, as the fine folks at xda-developers recently discovered. Better yet, you don't even have to edit those characters yourself -- if your EVO's nice and rooted and the word "brick" doesn't inspire fear, you'll find instructions and flash-ready ZIP files at our source link.

    EVO 4G Root released

We'd already seen proof that the oh-so-lovely hacking community had already managed to root (read: gain full, unrestricted administrative privileges for) the unreleased Sprint EVO 4G -- but outside of a very select bunch, the process was kept on lock down. Fear not! Now you, too, can get all up on some handset hacking debauchery. Well, you can if you have an EVO -- which for the vast majority of would-be owners, won't happen until tomorrow's launch.

Jabulani designer defends World Cup ball, says players just not used to playing at altitiude

The lead developer of the Jabulani, the ball that will be used in the World Cup, has hit back at his noisy critics. Dr. Andy Harland, who helped design the ball at England's Loughborough University's Sports Technology Institute, says that what many players are complaining about now, that the ball "moves strangely" or whatever, can be attributed to using the ball at altitude. The ball has been around since December, and he has heard zero complaints until now. So what gives?

  • HTC Evo 4G rooted in record time (video)

HTC Evo 4G rooted in record time (video)

We're still a good dozen days away from its public release, but the Evo 4G has already been given a rooting makeover. Google dished out Evo handsets to all the lucky (so lucky!) attendees of its blowout I/O 2010 event, and a trio of those visitors rolled up their sleeves and decided to get down and intimate with the phone over the weekend. The product of their labor is at this stage just a few screenshots and a blurry video after the break, but fear not, we're sure details of the hack will be forthcoming promptly.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Holy cow! AT&T data tethering revealed in iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4

You heard it right! AT&T have finally given their approval to allow their bazillion or so iPhone users to hook their computer up to AT&T's magical data waves, tether stylee. Tethering was first introduced as an option in iPhone OS 3.0, but AT&T wouldn't let US users get in on the laptop-on-iPhone action, for fear that their network would explode. So, up until this point, tethering has strictly been an international affair, despite AT&T's looming promise of "soon".

Nobody wants the NBCU-Comcast merger to go down

Looks like nobody in the TV industry wants the NBCU-Comcast merger to go down. And who could blame them! ABC, CBS, and Fox affiliates are afraid that, if the merger goes down, it'll cause the clouds to darken and the streets to run red with the blood of something or other. Basically, they're scared that the merger will put the in a very bad position indeed.

What’s the deal with these Microsoft Seinfeld ads?

I'm not quite sure what this was important to someone, but Todd Bishop of TechFlash sat down with Microsoft to discuss those crazy Seinfeld ads from way back in ought-8. He essentially asked Microsoft "What were you thinking?" and got some interesting replies. Essentially, Microsoft wanted to introduce Windows 7 in a big way but they weren't sure how to go about it. Their marketing execs wanted an icebreaker to invite the world back into the mind of Microsoft. The result? Some of the craziest commercials the company ever released.
