Hands-on with Honda’s U3-X, the amazing people mover
Posted on April 6, 2010 | No Comments
Step aside Segway, because this is amazing. This U3-X is a tiny unicycle like people mover designed for folks with debilitating injuries or problems walking. You sit on it, put your feet on a pair of pedals, and move your body to move forward, backwards, and even side to side. It's amazingly small and lasts one hour on a charge.
Jimin and I tried the U3-X in a ballroom in Times Square and both of us came away impressed. It is completely self righting and to ride it you just move your body in the direction you want to go. The wheels-within-wheels system allows for 360-degree motion.

Japanese university develops Robo-Skateboard
Posted on March 31, 2010 | No Comments
Earlier today, we've covered Honda's U3-X, and now we bring you another mobility robot from Japan. What we have here is a robotic skateboard, which was developed by the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo. And no, it's not really a fun project. That DIY Segway skateboard is about to get some serious competition.

Dost thou love tires? Then do not squander tires, for that is the stuff homemade shoes are made of
Posted on March 5, 2010 | No CommentsCraft has instructions for making your own retro shoes from an old tire and a pair of jeans. While I don’t think these will hold up to the heavy duty running I do (at least two miles a year), they might be a fun weekend project for those so inclined. The question, however is whether you [...] -

The most ridiculous cars of CES [gallery]
Posted on January 9, 2010 | No Comments
I decided to take a gander through the car audio section of the show and was met with quite possibly some of the most grandiose automobiles I have ever been within 5 feet of. Despite the purpose of these vehicles being to showcase the audio systems these companies can create, flashing lights and bright colors seemed to be the attention getting method of choice. Although, more often than not, I heard Soulja Boy being passed as music. Gross. Anyway, the image descriptions will tell you exactly why these constructs made the most ridiculous list.

Golf Ball Launcher replaces golf clubs, skill
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No Comments
The most rewarding and infuriating aspect of golf is that it takes a LOT of time and patience to get good at it. As Americans, should we continue to let the challenge of golf trample upon our freedom to easily and quickly excel at the sport? NO!

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLVII: these Adidas don’t go on your feet
Posted on December 22, 2009 | No CommentsNothing says "I occasionally don a $200 jogging suit and plod through prominent areas of Central Park where my Greco-Roman form has the best chance of being noticed by onlookers" like carrying an Adidas-branded phone in your pocket. Bonus points for a metal-look "Sports" badge glued to the inside of the hinge. But ouch... minus 15 points for it being an unlicensed product, my friend -- who do you think you're fooling with this thing? Actually, whether it be the streets of Shenzhen or New York City, we don't think the average individual would suspect that this was a ripoff from the outside -- it's actually pretty convincing and tasteful -- but the multicolored lights on the keypad might give it away when you flip it open. Your years of athletic achievements, poof! Gone just like that in a cloud of illegal branding.Keepin' it real fake, part CCXLVII: these Adidas don't go on your feet originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 05:12:00 EST. The Belkin Bluetooth Music Receiver sends your iPhone’s music to speakers and such
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No CommentsLooking at this Belkin Bluetooth Music Receiver, I'm over here thinking, “Man, 99 percent of the stuff we write about is useless unless you're in the market for that type of item.” That's not a knock against the Bluetooth thing here, but if you're not looking for one right now? Not all that exciting, no.

New projector displays an image 65 feet wide
Posted on December 8, 2009 | No Comments
Projectors have come a long way in the past couple of years, but they aren't exactly suitable for replacing monitors. What they can do, however, is put images on almost any surface — and there are a select few like the Projectiondesign F35 that can create truly enormous displays.

Thanko announces not one but two USB-powered, heated slippers
Posted on December 2, 2009 | No Comments
It's Thanko time again. The Tokyo-based company, famous for gadgets like the USB-powered boob warmer, the USB eye warmer or the USB gloves, is now offering not one [JP] but two [JP] USB-powered, heated slippers - just in time for winter. I can't decide which one is uglier, but maybe you can.

An asteroid almost smashed into Earth, and we only knew about it 15 hours before it happened
Posted on November 12, 2009 | No CommentsDid you hear the news? An asteroid passed within 8,700 miles of the planet on Friday. The craziest thing is that scientists only knew about it 15 hours before it flew by. So if you have any confidence that this planet is safe from giant space objects smashing into the surface, possibly destroying all life in the process, well, think again.

Thanko’s USB powered, Dinosaur foot-shaped slipper keeps your feet warm
Posted on November 12, 2009 | No Comments
OK, now the USB gadget craze gets really silly. Tokyo-based crap USB accessory maker Thanko has been selling USB-powered slippers and gloves that are supposed to keep you warm in the past, but the new model, Dinosaur foot-shaped slipper(s) [JP] (of all things), is probably the silliest.
