Posted on March 23, 2010 | No CommentsWe just got back from the Sprint EVO 4G announcement, where ol’ Yeller just happened to have a few devices on hand. I spent a few minutes getting to know the device (far less than I wanted to, trust me) — read on for my first impressions and a quick demo video. I was genuinely surprised [...] -

Hands on with the Alex ereader
Posted on March 17, 2010 | No Comments
The Alex ereader is out and I got to look at it today for a few minutes. The top part is a real epaper screen and the bottom part is essentially a small Android MID. The device has Wi-Fi and is available now for $399, shipping in May.
The company had a few interesting points about their sales strategy. Their goal isn't to sell and ship devices, although their ereader will play epub, PDF, HTML, and TXT files out of the box. They are currently partnering with international publishing houses and periodicals and will work with those partners to create an web store as well as a unique UI for each device. In this way a newspaper could offer a branded version of its reader and offer it at a subsidized rate to online subscribers or a publishing house or book store could offer their own branded experience.

Casio’s ultra-tough G’zOne Brigade going on sale tomorrow?
Posted on March 10, 2010 | No CommentsWAAAAY back in November, Casio and Verizon showed off the G’zOne Brigade, an ultra-durable clamshell phone with a surprise QWERTY keyboard packed inside. “Push to talk!” they said. “It’s weatherproof!” they said. And then the radio went silent; nearly four months later, not so much as a release date had been mentioned. Well, it looks like [...] -
Verizon currently experiencing nationwide data outage
Posted on March 3, 2010 | No CommentsDid you look at your Verizon Droid minutes ago and wonder why you hadn’t gotten any emails within the last few minutes? I did. I just marked it up as the start of a good day, but apparently I was exactly wrong. Verizon’s data network is down and my Gmail inbox is full. Damn. There’s no [...] -

Hands-on with the HTC Legend (with video)
Posted on February 16, 2010 | No Comments
When the HTC Hero was announced in June of last year, I would have made a valiant effort to eat my own head if it meant I got to own one. It was just so damned pretty.
I just got the opportunity to play with its brand-new successor, the HTC Legend - and, well.. to put it gently, it makes the HTC Hero look like an antique.
I only got to spend a few minutes with it, but I walked away not wanting to walk away. Read on for my impressions.

Google Street View camera car tagged with GPS sensor, stalked around Berlin
Posted on February 6, 2010 | No Comments
The story here is that someone secretly affixed a GPS tracker on a Google Street View camera car and you can follow the car's progress using Google Maps while it's photographing the streets of Berlin. Sort of ironic, isn't? But either the car seems to be stopped or Google caught wind of the stalkers because I haven't seen any progress the last few minutes. Or maybe they're eating. Either way, click through for the live Google Map.

Review: WristOffice mobile device holder
Posted on January 8, 2010 | No Comments“I will wear the WristOffice all day today.” That was the promise I made to company president Walt Froloff. He started showing off his $80 WristOffice system, which was born out [...] -

Hands-on with Motorola Backflip
Posted on January 6, 2010 | No CommentsWe spent a few minutes with the just-announce Backflip and, well, it’s a Moto Cliq with weird swivel keyboard. Really, everything about the device feels the same as the Cliq. Even the love-it-or-hate-it MotoBlur interface is still in place. But depending on the price and carrier, it could be a popular product. The [...] -
AppMakr: Make your own iPhone apps for just two bills
Posted on January 6, 2010 | No Comments
What AppMakr lacks in vowels they make up for in coolness. AppMakr is a dead easy app design engine that allows you to enter a URL or search term, pick a few images, and publish an app to the App Store in a few minutes.
The service uses RSS feeds and searches to build a comprehensive feed of your website or "personal brand" that is updated automatically. You can then push the app live for $199 or download the app to your own machine for $499.
