    x264 now encodes Blu-ray-compatible video

Break out a blank DVD and fire up x264! The folks behind x264, the freeware h.264 encoder, have announced Blu-ray compatibility. That means you'll be able to burn a DVD containing h.264 video that will play on your standard-issue Blu-ray player. That's good news if you still burn DVDs, something I haven't done in for something like a year, and even then it was for someone else. Go away, plastic discs.

Video on demand: The patron saint of Tribeca Film Festival?

Is video on demand the key to making your spiffy indie movie the next Huge Success? Depends on who you ask. The Tribeca Film Festival will experiment with VOD this year, having signed deals with cable providers like Comcast, Verizon FIOS, and Cablevision (a New York-area provider, for those of you who've never heard of it before) to create a Tribeca VOD channel. Spider-Man 4 gets a director: Marc Webb, from (500) Days of Summer

It's time for your Hollywood Minute! Late last night it emerged that Marc Webb, the director of (500) Days of Summer, which I think is a romantic comedy/drama judging by the trailer (I do have the rip sitting on one of my hard drives, lest you think we don't practice what we preach), will direct Spider-Man 4. The movie is currently scheduled to be released in the summer of 2012, and may well be filmed in 3D.

Disney announces new DVD Killer technology

I love companies like Disney. They seem to think that just because they want something some way, it'll happen. Take for instance their latest scheme. Instead of allowing you to "buy" their movies on DVD, Blu-ray, or even VHS, they are going to allow you to buy access to their content.
