Shock study: Adult Web sites are filled with malware

Wow, who would have guessed that visiting adult Web sites would be dangerous to the health of your computer? I mean, of all of the genres of sites out there—sports, tech, politics, books, etc.—the last I would have predicted to be dangerous was adult ones. Thanks, International Secure System Lab

Want Safari Reader functionality in Firefox or Google Chrome? Try Readability (it’s quite good).

Aside from the usual under-the-hood improvements, Safari 5 ships with a new feature called Safari Reader. The concept is simple enough: you're reading text on a Web site but don't want to be distracted by terrible page layouts and extraordinarily annoying animated advertisements. You activate Reader, then the browser isolates the text and applies a far more readable formatting to the text. The result is much cleaner text, and text that doesn't destroy your eyes trying to read. The best part is that you don't need the new Safari to replicate the same functionality. I speak, of course, about Readablity.

The SayCool tablet mates a 7-inch multitouch display to Windows XP

There is a steady stream of tablet PCs flowing out of China recently. Most of them are just the same ol' thing, but this SayCool tablet stood out from the rest with a 7-inch capacitive screen that's apparently multitouch capable. Now, the tablet runs Windows XP, which isn't nearly as touch friendly as Win7, but it certainly can be done with the right cocktail of software and hardware.

  • Notice the Windows alternative in HP’s slate device. This is a good thing.

Notice the Windows alternative in HP’s slate device. This is a good thing.

We have written repeatedly that Windows itself is one of the main reasons why touchscreen computers have never caught the general public's attention. The interface just wasn't designed for finger input. Like it or not, that's the truth. Windows was designed to be used with a mouse, and to a lesser extent, a pen or stylus. That's fine. Windows 7 works great. I'm writing this on a Win7 machine. But I hate Windows on my tablet computers for the aforementioned reason. It's also the reason I'm very apprehensive of the upcoming onslaught of slate computers. I'm afraid that wonderful hardware will be passed up in favor of the disappointing iPad because of the interface. But Adobe gave me hope today in its demo of Flash and Air on the HP slate device.

  • Maybe Hulu is right to block Boxee?

Maybe Hulu is right to block Boxee?

If I may, I'd like to play devil's advocate to something I wrote a few days ago. To quickly summarize, Boxee took issue with NBCU's Jeff Zucker's characterization that Boxee was some sort of rogue piece of software, and that Hulu is in the right whenever it blocks access to the XBMC-derived media player. How about this: maybe Hulu is right to block Boxee? Let's see where this takes us.

Boxee responds to NBC’s Jeff Zucker’s misleading statements to Congress re: Hulu-Boxee relationship

The world's worst manager, Jeff Zucker, who just so happens to be the president of NBC Universal, was on Capitol Hill today trying to persuade lawmakers to allow the proposed merger with Comcast go through. Interesting to note his take on Boxee's relationship with Hulu, which, you'll recall, has been something of a mess. Boxee adds Hulu compatibility, Hulu breaks said compatability, Boxee re-works its code so that Hulu works again, Hulu breaks compatability again, etc. And on and on and on.

Is Sony trying to get Firefox ported to the PS3?

So this is reasonably exciting. Some super secret source told PlayStation Insider that Sony has talked to Mozilla about porting Firefox to the PS3. Note the wording of that sentence: talks about porting Firefox. Needless to say, if this is even true, then we're at a very early stage of development.
