  • Sprint fires employee who leaked weak EVO 4G sales numbers

Sprint fires employee who leaked weak EVO 4G sales numbers

You know the backstory by now: Sprint boasted that the EVO 4G was its fastest selling phone ever a couple of days after hitting the American market, before abruptly correcting itself and admitting that the EVO's sales were in fact in line with those achieved by the Pre last summer. What you, and we, didn't know till now, however, is that Sprint's self-correction was sparked off by an employee with a curious mind and posting privileges over on the xda-developers forum. On June 6, according to MobileCrunch, this unnamed hero of truthiness browsed Sprint's internal inventory system and nailed down a figure of 65,500 sold units from Sprint's own stores -- a stat far south from what Sprint would announce a day later. That number ultimately found its way onto the message board, and though it obviously shouldn't be taken as authoritative (or exhaustive), it was enough to get Sprint to hit the auto-correct button and part ways with the activist member of staff. Harsh.

    [Thanks, Carol]

  • Review: The Torch, a $300 flashlight

Review: The Torch, a $300 flashlight

Let's be honest for a moment: an awful lot of the stuff we cover here at CrunchGear isn't really necessary. All the silly USB gadgets, geek gizmos, and other doodads are fun to own, but don't make your life demonstrably better. So I was pretty excited when I was given the opportunity to review the Torch from Wicked Lasers. Billed as the world's brightest flashlight at a whopping 4,100 lumens, this seemed like the kind of thing that might be worth having. I mean, who doesn't like flashlights? They're great for when the power goes out, and to take camping, and are a generally practical gadget that does make your life better. Read on for the details about the Torch.

Look at you go, T-Mobile! T-Mo was one of the last off the bat with a 3G network — hell, their 3G network is just now really getting to a respectable size — but now they’re the first in the US to roll out a 21 Mbps HSPA+ (still considered 3G, though its 5-7x faster [...]

Pirate Bay fires its copyright-busting cannon at YouTube

Supposedly, the The Pirate Bay guys were found guilty in their recent trial in Sweden, and, supposedly, they got sentenced to a year in prison and had to pay $4.5 million in damages. But back in the parallel universe which happens to be the real world, they've appealed the verdict and could probably keep doing so for the next few years. So in the meantime they need to keep busy, and what better way to do this than start a new user driven video portal to take on YouTube, called, predictably, Video Bay, allowing users to post and share video clips without having to worry about copyright violations. Seems reasonable. It's not like they need to attract any more legal interest or anything.

  • Yahoo Japan fires up video delivery service for Sharp AQUOS TVs

Yahoo Japan fires up video delivery service for Sharp AQUOS TVs

With Akihabara, mobile TV that works and games like this, does Japan really need another nicety to remind us of how awesome it is? Starting this week, Yahoo Japan has started to deliver free video services to loads of Sharp AQUOS HDTVs. The so-called Douga Channel currently offers some 3,000 videos gratis, and absolutely no member registration is required to tap in. At least initially, the service will target Sharp's AQUOS DS6 family of products, which are equipped with a revised Sharp GUI and an 'Ex System' for handling the video processing. Better still, the material coming through can be viewed in SD or HD, which has to make local cable companies cringe. At any rate, the company is still trying to hammer out a business model before delving into pay-TV, and it's hoping to service at least one million TV sets in the not-too-distant future. So... any news for North America?

  • HP recalls another 15,000 laptop batteries, this time in China

HP recalls another 15,000 laptop batteries, this time in China

HP just recalled a hefty 70,000 laptop batteries earlier this month, but it looks like it still has a few more fires to put out, and it's now recalled another 15,000 batteries sold in China. No reports of any actual "flames / fire" this time around but, as with countless other recalls, the batteries are apparently prone to overheating, and can indeed pose a pesky fire hazard. Word of specific models affected is also a bit hard to come by at the moment, but the batteries were apparently used in laptops manufactured between late 2007 and early 2008, and include models sold under both the HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario brands. If that sounds like your laptop, you can get in touch with HP China for a free replacement battery.
