Motorola Droid over-the-air update to 2.0.1 now available with less over-the-air
Posted on December 9, 2009 | No Comments
Seriously, don't let Verizon's tyrannical "we want to make sure the update goes smoothly" attitude get in the way of enjoying your Android 2.0.1 just the way you like it: fresh, piping hot, and served on the bleeding, jagged edge. Just because you haven't been carefully groomed and hand-picked to receive the Droid's latest (and first) firmware update over the air doesn't mean that you've got to twiddle your thumbs; thankfully, the binary has leaked onto the 'nets, which means you just need to copy it to your microSD card (Motorola graciously included a 16GB one with your phone, if you recall correctly) and follow a few simple instructions. Godspeed, Droid owner -- never let The Man hold you down. Not now, not ever.

T-Mobile pushing CLIQ firmware update today? (update: yes!)
Posted on December 1, 2009 | No Comments
TmoNews seems to have it on good authority that T-Mobile will be rolling out a firmware update over the air to the Motorola CLIQ today -- the device's first since launch -- and we've got good news and bad news. First, the bad: by all accounts, it appears that this'll still be an Android 1.5-based firmware, adding fuel to the fire suggesting that UI skins like BLUR are a huge barrier to keeping devices up to speed with Google's breakneck release pace. The good news, though, is that the update seems to be lined up to fix a plethora of issues involving Bluetooth, touchscreen accuracy (we can attest to this one), connectivity, accelerometer functionality, and -- wait for it -- battery life! Looks like the build number is 1.1.31, so let us know if and when you get hooked up, owners.
Update: We've gotten tips from several users now that they've already been able to nab the update, so it looks like the CLIQ is definitely getting a little better today. Well, hopefully, anyhow.T-Mobile pushing CLIQ firmware update today? (update: yes!) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 01 Dec 2009 12:52:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Amazon announces better battery life and native PDF support for the Kindle
Posted on November 24, 2009 | No Comments
Amazon announced some major changes to their Kindle e-book reader today. Specifically, it stated that they've worked out a way to increase battery life by 85%. That means that the new firmware update will allow you to leave your Kindle on (with the wifi active) for about 7 days before you need to recharge. Additionally, the Kindle will now support Adobe's PDF format natively. Previously, you had to convert PDFs in order to view them on the Kindle.

Sprint pushes OTA bug-fixin’ update to HTC Hero
Posted on November 19, 2009 | No Comments
Sprint has pushed out an over-the-air firmware update for its popular HTC Hero 'droid handset. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with Android 2.0, but it does purportedly fix a pesky SMS bug which has been causing battery drain issues. Oh, and it also helps your favorite Hero play nice with daylight saving time. But apparently, that's just about all the update does.

Original BlackBerry Storm to get flick scrolling, better browsing through firmware update?
Posted on October 19, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Software, RIM, Verizon Wireless, BlackBerry OS
Despite Verizon's best efforts to ignore the obvious, RIM's BlackBerry Storm2 is not only official, it's (un)officially destined for Big Red's airwaves. If you're one of those slightly disgruntled Storm 9530 owners, however, you could be looking at a rather nice firmware update coming your way in the near future. According to phoneArena, the Storm and Storm2 will eventually be "practically identical" in terms of software, with a forthcoming update to add flick scrolling, tabbed browsing and threaded texting to the original. Of course, we should probably wait for VZW to confirm the existence of the Storm2 before expecting any formal word on this, but feel free to go about your day with cautious optimism.Original BlackBerry Storm to get flick scrolling, better browsing through firmware update? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 19 Oct 2009 10:19:00 EST. Some HTC Hero units shipping sans EV-DO Rev. A on Sprint? (update: nope!)
Posted on October 12, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA, Android
Ruh roh. Without claiming that there's some sort of high-speed conspiracy going on at Sprint (read: there's not), we'd like to point out that quite a few early adopters are claiming that their Hero refuses to hop on the carrier's EV-DO Rev. A network. We took a peek back at the company's press release for this very phone, and sure enough, the Rev. A experience is promised. We're guessing that a simple firmware update will be all it takes to remedy the issue (if there's truly an issue at all), but 'til then, there's always WiFi! Right, guys?
[Via Examiner, thanks Tracknod]
Update: We just heard directly from HTC about this snafu, and as it turns out, the message that Sprint Hero users are seeing is merely a mislabeling. If you're within an EV-DO Rev. A area, you'll get Rev. A speeds -- despite that fact that your phone says it's only on Rev. 0. We're also told that a future maintenance release will address the message. Check the full quote after the break.Continue reading Some HTC Hero units shipping sans EV-DO Rev. A on Sprint? (update: nope!)

Firmware Update Fixes MacBook SATA ‘Issue’, Silences Conspiracists
Posted on June 23, 2009 | No CommentsApple is a company so highly scrutinized that every tiny decision, mistake or rumor is considered as an Area 51-sized conspiracy. So it was recently with the new MacBook Pros. When it became apparent that there wasn’t much wrong with the updated machines (other than an added FireWire Drive and better battery life), the complainers [...] -
Verizon finally releasing BlackBerry Storm update this weekend
Posted on May 29, 2009 | No Comments
An incredible way to start the weekend, Storm owners: Verizon is finally pulling the trigger on a firmware update, which will be available to all comers starting on Sunday at 3PM Eastern time. If that's too much trouble, you'll alternatively be able to sit back, chill, and wait for the over-the-air version to hit, which should follow on at 10PM. Verizon tells us that it'll be releasing 4.7.0.148, as rumored -- just a tiny bump from the failed build 141 that had been rumored before that, but all told, far, far too long since the last official update was rolled out. We can only assume this has been tested better than a NASA launch at this point, so you're on notice, guys.Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds

New Canon EOS 5D Mark II firmware to add manual exposure control for video recording
Posted on May 26, 2009 | No CommentsHey, it's no autofocus, but Canon's sent word that a free firmware update is coming for the EOS 5D Mark II that'll enable manual exposure control while shooting video, including ISO and aperture settings and shutter speed. Excited? Yeah, us too. No word on what else the update might entail, but it looks like we won't have to wait long either, as the company's saying to expect the download sometime in early June.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
