Remember when I was all like “The iPad does Flash?” Yeah. Well. No.

Yes, I knew Apple would never add Flash. Yes, I knew it was probably an accident that they showed Flash. But Apple, as we see, does nothing without running it past a vat full of lawyers. That they showed Flash on an iPad running on the NY Times website was clearly a mistake and, more [...]

Opera Mobile 10 for Android now available, but not to you

Android's always in need of a better browser. Hell, every mobile platform is -- yes, even your precious Pres and iPhones can always stand to eke out a little more speed, a little more rendering capability, and a little more functionality (yeah, that's right, Flash), and Opera Mobile has always been at or near the top of the game. Version 10 -- which is currently in public beta for Windows Mobile and Symbian -- has now been turned loose on Android, but the catch is that it's only available to carriers and manufacturers of devices right now. The reason? Opera claims that these versions "present limitations that hinder mass consumer distribution" without elaborating -- and if you ask us, Android's built-in browser has plenty of "limitations" in its own right, so seriously, Opera, go ahead and turn it loose. We won't judge. Okay, maybe we will, but we'll go easy.

Law firm asks, ‘Were you banned from Xbox Live? We want to help.’

It's safe to say that we hear at CrunchGear think you should be able to do whatever you want with hardware that you buy. Let's take console modding. You wanna flash the drive on your 360 for whatever reason? Fine, go ahead. But don't think that you can log onto Xbox Live with said modded console, and play your misbegotten wares (or is that warez?), on Microsoft's network. It's against the TOS, it makes a mockery of the entertainment medium that you purport to support, and, well, is unfair to the other players.

motorola-motus-motofan-ru There seems to be an unspoken style guideline amongst spy shot shooters: find the worst lighting possible, ditch the flash, and down 3-4 cups of coffee before snapping away. Unfortunately, the spy behind this shot of the Android-powered Motorola Motus played by all the rules.

Flash 10.1 coming to webOS in first half 2010, says kinder, gentler Adobe page

Adobe may be a bit curt with its page to Apple and its iPhone faithful, but try getting Flash from a webOS device, and the company's got a message of hope: Flash 10.1 is coming, just wait until the first half of 2010. We don't know how long this message has been up there, but as far as both we and PreCentral can tell, it's fresh. It's certainly a date we haven't seen before -- last we heard a public beta was coming the end of this year, which may or may not still be the plan if the above message is referring to a final, non-beta release. Now you current Pre / future Pixi owners have something else to look forward to besides release 1.3.1.

Nokia posts first quarterly loss in a decade and why it matters

Nokia's shares are down 6.02 percent today on news that Nokia suffered an $834 million loss due to falling handset sales. In this environment it's easy to wave this away as a crisis blip but there may be something more afoot. Nokia blamed the loss on component shortages, a valid concern. Apple has been buying up all the flash it can eat and companies like LG and Samsung are blowing out feature phones to directly compete with Nokia's lower-end models faster than anyone thought possible.
